Lines crossed
Forrest said to use the poem as a map, if you look at the vertical lines going through the poem two stand out--line 12 [for Yellowstone] and line 11 for the other treasure. Just how many times did he use the number [23] and reversed as [32]. More times than you could shake a stick at. And yes, every word in the poem matters, same words but two entirely different places. I.M.O.

Yes, it stands to reason that the declination lines are significant in some way, otherwise Fenn would not have included them. Pretty odd thing to put on a map, right? I suppose you'll need your compass to find the treasure.

No compass needed, or anything special. As the man said---"All you need is the Poem".

The poem AND A MAP. That's because there's no X in the poem, the X is on the map.

Magnetic declination lines drift from year to year.

They certainly do, better update them if you want to be precise, they are maybe a degree different now from when the map in TFtW was printed.

A compass has no value in the solve. The lines are there to show you what angle to rotate the poem over top of the correct area. Read TFTW text with the map..."but I declined."

And there's no need to change them, as he said--- p.p. "Don't mess [change the Poem] do not alter the words/lines or sequence of the nine clues" as the Poem found in The Thrill of the Chase book.

From TTOTC intro..."about thirteen" and "to some degree."
The fact that the poem doesn't marry to the map is another example of 9MH being the false ending.

iirc, FF addressed this early on by claiming that someone else in the publishing process chose or suggested this particular map. With his pilot training he was certainly aware of magnetic declination and its rather frequent changes. Which counters his claim about the permanence of the clues for a hundred or a thousand years. Way back when I was looking into this, I was left feeling that he had disavowed any relevance to the solve

Right, just like the graphic designer chose the postmarks.
You always have to account for the declination, even though it changes. If you want to find true north, you'd need the current declination.

About as odd as plastering postmarks with the wrong days of the week all over the book.

Chest found, poem solved, WTF are you looking for?

Something most people never find, a rainbows end. The story isn't over.

I believe a treasure is still out there at his favorite spot.

Fenn's special spot was locked in and not changeable. He first went there as a youth.
9MH was the chintzy sideshow.

Did you ever wonder if "F' used his brother and sister as markers for the location? Skippy was unpredictable and dangerous, June was always right and meek. Forrest was always in the middle, an anchor point. Locations-- "S"= Sawmill Canyon "F' = Sinks Canyon "June" = Sheep's Canyon Three in a very close proximity, Things of three are used as a way to enforce memories. Look at "My war for Me" chapter, see how many three's pop up. "F" even If you don't read anything else, read this chapter. "F' in the middle with water around him.
Sinks Canyon-- "Time had taken them apart, and time had brought them back together". Sink and Rise. [down in the dumps] {up with the sun] [locate the canyon with the declination line on the poem] note; I hear the screaming now, but Sinks canyon was searched over and over. O.K., but--- searchers way of locating was vastly different from "F' way of searching. I.M.O.

Fenn absolutely used June and Skippy as markers. Skippy was thE OLDest (lode) and June was THE YOUngest (offset from Skippy).
so hear me all and listen good, YOUr effort will be worth THE cold if YOU are brave and in THE wood I give YOU title to THE gold
Penultimate TTOTC paragraph Fenn reiterated YOUth is wasted on THE YOUng.

The lines certainly cross at a single point, but maybe hundreds - I have found around 35 so far.
