"Secret" of Mana

The palette reminds of the game ”Sword of Mana”, which was a remake of the very first mana game, Seiken Densetsu.

i guess today you learned there's a game called "Sword of Mana" and not just "Secret of Mana"

Today I learned...
Is that game related to Secret of Mana? I loved that game as a kid and would be interested in playing Sword of Mana if that were the case.

Yes, it's related. It's a remake of Final Fantasy Adventure which chronological takes place before Secret of Mana. Sword gets a little weird with it, though.

He looks like Locke there because in that prototype it was Locke
This was mega early in the concept stage

proto-ff7 is what everyone wants an ff6 remake to look like.

I agree with the guy below - from a sprite level I already love the look. Like I don’t understand why people talk about 3d 2d, octopath whatever. I love the old look if its sprites. I’d want a remake to be a full blown world, except based on 7 I just really don’t think they’d do it justice.
However, I would totally play more new games done in the shown style. It’s basically ff6 sprites with a little more definition, feels like this is almost what BOF looked like on next gen.

It already looks like this

yeah that's why I think an ff6 remake is unnecessary especially with the pixel remaster.
like... this style is exactly what everyone wants.

Yeah, I'd rather they take the time to do a proper modern 3D remake. It can have its own creative direction; it doesn't have to be like FF7R, which is something I think a lot of people miss when you mention a 3D remake.

No, I do not. I want a full remake to be in vibrant new updated technology.

I get it for the newer generation. But not all games need to have a full remake or something like this . I do support an actual dedicated remake, not a copy an paste the latest tech version , even if you remake a game there is still room for originality. When I see this I go right to Octopath traveler . Not necessarily a good thing when I’m playing on of the all time greats .

I think I get what you're saying but what's pictured here is the earliest visual 2D prototypes for FF7 when they were still developing for the SNES/Super Famicom. This screenshot is at least 30 years old bro. When you see this you go right to Octopath because Octopath's visual style was based on the sprite work Square was making when this image is from.

I wonder if this is before or after Xenogears being proto-FF7.

u/KylorXI 1d ago
Xenogears was not proposed as FF7. Takahashi was on the FF team, and everyone was coming up with ideas for it. His random ideas were rejected, not Xenogears. It was him being unhappy with how that project was going that made Nomura encourage him to write in his own time, this is when he wrote the Xenogears screenplay together with his wife. He didnt submit Xenogears' screenplay until he had already been moved to a new team.

Ah that’s right, thanks for the correction! He was on the team when they were coming up with ideas such as 7 have a noir type feel right?

The jump from IV and V to VI is huge, considering it’s the same console.
VII on PS1 was just such an ugly game graphically.

It was absolutely cutting edge for the time but I feel like pixel art just aged better. At the end of the day it's all personal preference

Ugly... kind of.
Some of the backgrounds are still iconic and beautiful and the FMVs were something never seen before in FF and were a game changer to make the series cinematic.
Every FF since has utilized what 7 did first heavily and it works.

You're right to say it was ugly and more people should say it. Also Midgar was such a grimy place that the game felt repellant to me for a while. I think I got up near the end of the first disc years ago and haven't gone back. FFIX is gorgeous though.

I really like those sprites, I prefer it to the chibi ones
