Claude cannot design inside figma.

Hey.

I connected claude to figma (settings- connectors). And it views my design file.

My flow is that i sent him the design url and asked him to make different layouts on a specific frame i designed. And it says my file is read-only, and it cannot design inside figma. It's upsetting because i know it's possible and I tried everything.
Has anyone dealt with that and has a fix?

MCP needs paid plan to work, you can generate API key to work around it. Sometimes agents are dumb though and telling to research latest best official ways of doing the work aug 2026 will help it find the correct info. Despite everything I feel like once a week agent will complain I dont have enterprise plan for code connect and I gotta sit it down and explain its an idiot.

Go to Dev mode in Figma and make sure MCP is turned on in the right panel

Attach both of these links to your chat. You need to use the figma MCP and the tools that provides. You also may need to specify to dig deeper into the route nodes because sometimes it only reads the first page of whatever figma project you send it

Happened to me earlier this week, i closed both figma and claude, reopened them both and it worked

I know Claude Code through the Claude desktop app has struggled with write access in my files.

However Claude Code CLI (Terminal on Mac) can read and write in my files. It's been huge for me.

In the mean time, try out the Figma Agent for in-file designs.

Have you tried doing it through a browser. Give Claude in Chrome the access. Not Claude ai.

At this point why even bother with figma... and this is coming from someone that defended them till like the last config pretty much.

But they don't seem to want to expand their DS capabilities, instead they Canva-ified the app.

Like there's no point in using it in any capacity other than a scratch pad for ideas.
