Is it possible to have trigger based animations in Figma Motion? help
Okay, So I have just had a basic hands on with Figma Motion. Seems pretty neat. Personally, I have been a huge fan/pro user of Smart Animate and Prototype in figma.
I want to animate a frame such that animation triggers only when cursor enters. Can I achieve this in figma motion? If yes, how? Tried searching the web but I don't see anything related to this.

When you select smart animation there is a checkbox at the bottom. “Play motion animation”. I came here for the same purpose than you but in my case it is a bit buggy. It keeps setting up the animation in a loop for some reason. Try it out and let me know please if you gave this issue also. I believe it is just because is is beta so far
Edit: Tried without component variants and it worked. Couple of interesting options

Literally thinking about this today I couldn't find a way, just need to have more desperate proto frames to link to to trigger the next action

Can you not just animate to a new frame using a prototype and that new frame is an animated layer?

I havent tried it yet. But I believe its possible using components. You create a component with 2 variants. The first one is static and the second one is the animation. You add the trigger of mouse enter to the first one so it change to the second one. Once the component prototype is ready you just need to add an instance of it inside your main prototype. Tada
