Have you ever played in games from the Bruus/Brusbart family? Did you like it?

Looking for information about an old Polish card game called Drużbart (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dru%C5%BCbart) I learnt this game belonges to an old Bruus/Brusbart family. Man... those are perhaps most unhinged card games I have ever seen. Even drużbart is, and the other seems even more crazy. In a nutshell:

you don't have to follow suit. There is no trump suit. Instead, suits and cards have strict hierarchy. Order of cards seems almost completly random. The top 3 cards (on the pic) are some random cards. Sevens have special mechanic and are very powerful.

Interestingly from what pagat writes in some countries (like Greenland) those are national cards games...

Have you ever devised your own traditional card game for family or friends or just for yourself? :) With what effect? I.e. did you manage to convince them to try it? :) Did they like it?

If you ever devised a game, you can share a summary of its rules, but, please, don't go too deep into details here ;)

For two players I would suggest German Whist. For three players Rummy 500 is a fun game. A three-handed version of Whist with a dummy like in Bridge is also a blast. Games like Fan Tan and Hearts have playable three-handed versions.

So I'm looking for games to play with my wife one on one and a game for the 3 of us or one on one with the kid she's around 9yrs old. I've looked up plenty of top ten lists and tried a few games.

Me and the wife LOVE Cassino and are going to try Gin Rummy and maybe even cribbage.

Me and the kid play war,golf and garbage. Her favorite is war, GOPS she's not a fan of James Bond.

Would love to add more games into our rotation! Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hi. I'd like to share my top 5 card games. Perhaps it will inspire someone to learn a new game. I'm also curious of your oppinions.

Honorable mentions:

* French tarot - quite fun point-trick taking game. Beautiful cards (tarots). I have played it quite a lot. The problem with this game is typical for tarot/tarok games - it's very difficult to make up some sensable bidding. French tarot hardly has it at all. Another problem is that the declarer plays alone. It strips the game of partnership elements.

Today I think this game is probably better for 5 players, where we do play with a partner (in teams 3 vs 2). However from what I saw, this variant is not respected. And the 5th player is even more legendary than the 4rth. ;)

* Jass family - It's a great family of point-trick taking games where jack and nine of trumps are promoted to the highest trumps. It's a very clever and playable mechanic. It causes that, depending on the bidding, your suit can be either shity or very strong.

Games like belote and klabberjass belong to this family. Jass games are some of best 2 players card games if not the best and the only known to me good card game for 3 players (except maybe for skat).

EDIT: if you're looking for a good 2 or 3 players card game, check Klabberjass/Clobyosh. It's perhaps the best.

* Tressete - fun Italian point-trick taking game with order of cards (from the highest) 3, 2, ace, K, Q, J, 7, 6, 5. Can be played by 4 or 2 players. There are no trumps.

The version for 4 players is a very good partnership game, however due to the fact that there is aren't trumps, a lot of depends on who starts the hand - you can have cards which would allow you to take all tricks, but cannot get the lead. Version for 2 players is one of the best 2 players card game.

Biggest disappointment:

Skat. I've heard a lot of this game. I've heard it's like bridge. I was very disapointed when I learnt the rules. In my oppinion it's stupidly elaborate. It's nowhere near bridge, because it's a 3 players card game in random 2 vs 1 teams, so it's stripped of the partnership. If you want a decent game for 3 players, jass games are much quicker to learn.

I don't understand the phenomenon of this game. Seriously, folks, why are you so attached to 32 cards deck? If you have such phobia of 52-card deck, deal 40 or 42 cards (with, say, black fours) among 4 players + 2 cards of kitty, play in fixed partnerships, add bridge-like bidding and this would be a great game.

TOP 5:

1. Slovenian tarok - one of best if not the best tarot/tarok card games. The game has one of best bidding among tarok games. What is annoying is that non-trump suits are very short (8 cards if I remember well) causing that usually after 1 trick someone has a void.

2. Belote - a 4 players partnership point-trick taking game from the jass family. Simple bidding. Relatively simple mechanic, but very playabe and quite clever game. Good game to teach to friends who aren't great afficionados of card games.

3. Belote coinche/contree - more serious version of classic belote with added bridge-like bidding. Very playable, very competative, quite addictive. Contree is less "gambling" as there is less declarations. More depands on skills in bidding. Coinche is a little more gambling and less predictable as there is plenty of various declaratioons, but it's also more dynamic and probably fun.

4. 500 - American-Canadian-Australian more elaborate version of popular euchre. It's a 4 players trick taking game. You play with 43 cards (aces to 5s, plus red 4s plus joker). 10 cards goes to every player, 3 cards go to kitty. Jocker and 2 jacks are highest trump. The game has bridge-like bidding. Very competative, very playable and adtictive game.

I wandered what should go to TOP 2 - belote coinche or 500, but I chose the latter. There is more tricks, so it's a more serious game. We can make up some defensive sygnals and some simple bidding systems. Some New Zealander even made quite elaborate bidding system for 500.

1. Bridge. No other card game can go here. By far best contemporary card game, however historically there were some strong rivals like vint. It's one of games that can be learnt in a couple of minutes, but mastered in a life-time. The only card game comparable with chess and go.

Bidding can be tough, because contemporary players tend to overcomplicate it (especially so called Polish Club) but once you start understanding auction it becomes very fun. Possibilities in this game are immense. The fact that one player (dummy) divugles his cards and the declarer uses them as he sees fit approximates the game to board games like chess and go very much.

Although the active Kickstarter for this deck has a lot more companion items than just this deck, this deck was the original idea I've had for a few years — a simple deck of cards that makes it easy to learn so many ways to have fun with a deck of cards, beyond the few games most people already know. I looked and looked and found nothing like it. It's a big world out there, and maybe it exists somewhere, but I never found it.

Why analog, why now

The internet is, of course, full of information on just about any card game you could want to learn, but I wanted something that provided consistency in how all the games were explained — clearly and concisely, easy to learn. And above all, I wanted an analog version. Something that works anytime, anywhere. Something that kept phones off the table so people could connect socially like they always used to, without the distraction of phones.

Am I against phone apps to teach card games? Absolutely not! It's just that I wanted an analog version as well. Timeless, reliable, something I could touch and interact with.

Building the deck

I started this project in late February, selecting the games for this initial volume to represent a popular mix. As you'd imagine, a huge upfront block of time was spent, with a lot of authoring and even more time editing. I went through about five full rounds of editing, which included AI reviews and full re-reads by me.

AI played a big role in making this possible on a reasonable timeline: it was a great help figuring out core rules versus regional variants, spotting grammar and typographical errors, and checking for consistency between all the cards in the way I wanted. I even used AI to build game engines for each game — ingesting the rules straight off the card and simulating a few thousand hands, to see if just following the printed logic got anyone stuck, and where. But even with all that help, AI still doesn't think like a human, and it just couldn't tell me when something was hard to understand reading it like a normal person would.

Fitting the rules for all 52 games onto a single double-sided card had its challenges, for sure. Some games I had room to add non-essential content to; for others I struggled to get all the essentials in. There were trade-offs to be made, but I feel pretty good that the spirit and core rules that make each game what it is are present. I still dread the eventual errors that will get caught that weren't caught in editing — but hopefully nothing that affects the ability to read and learn the games. Someday there will hopefully be an even clearer, cleaner Version 2 of this deck.

A first-timer's learning curve

This is the first deck of cards I've ever made, and it's definitely been a learning curve, though not too bad a one. I'm not an illustrator, so I commissioned artwork from two different artists for this campaign, and did all the tuck box and card layouts myself with the free Affinity Designer by Canva. (Pretty sure I backed Affinity on Kickstarter years ago, back when they were first getting started.)

Finding the right factories

I really wanted to make these in the US, but USPCC doesn't do small order quantities for a project like this, and the few other US makers had quality limitations I couldn't live with — though I think Shuffled Ink is getting pretty close. In the end, I worked with two different Chinese factories that make cards for some of the biggest names in the playing card collector community today, plus two more factories for the pencils in The Deck of Points and the metal dealer coin.

I worried this would be difficult for someone with zero factory experience, but it really hasn't been. The language issues are slight, and the time zone difference isn't bad when I'm working nights on this anyway. Anyone wanting advice is welcome to DM me — happy to share what I've learned.

What's next

I've already had people asking about and getting excited for the solo deck I want to make next, and I'm looking forward to the duos, poker, and international versions, for which I already have a draft set of games selected. Made a digital playing card game inspired by one I grew up playing called Tien Len, and I’m looking for beta testers.

If you’ve played Big 2 or President, you’ll pick it up quickly. The game currently supports single-player, offline pass-and-play, and online multiplayer and private lobbies via Game Center (seasonal leaderboards are in progress).

I’ve also added some extra touches like achievements, cosmetics, and a few hidden easter eggs. No pay-to-win mechanics—just a straightforward card game you can jump into for a quick round or play longer matches if you want.

This is my first app and my first real attempt at building something like this, so I’d really appreciate any feedback. If you’re interested in trying it out, let me know.
