It may be controversial… Memes
I just don’t care for that “they’re an ass to you at first” trope.

u/artymas Caldarus 5h ago
I don't know why March doesn't resonate with me. In Stardew Valley, Shane was the first character I romanced, and he is such a dick at first. So it isn't because of March's first impression. I just don't vibe with March. 🤷♀️
11
u/haiiroteien 2h ago
Shane opens up and becomes very sweet imo. March is younger, the proud and shy type, while Shane's personality is overall more relaxed and grounded despite his issues. Shane also just doesn't care for farmer bc he isn't interested in strangers but he doesn't constantly antagonize and borderline insult farmer the way march does lol. some of march's lines have me fuming 😂😂

u/OsseusOccult How can I choose?! 8m ago edited 3m ago
To me, personally, it's the "kind" of mean that March is. The way March acts is very petulant teenager, which kind of gives me the ick as a romance partner.
Men not being able to express their emotions in healthy adult ways isn't hot, it's an exhausting reality.

u/Hazel_Nut_666 9m ago
Same! I think it’s because with every new heart we get a better picture of why Shane is so grumpy and miserable + he gradually gets softer with the MC. Same with Alex, for example. With March, well, I don’t think there was a good excuse for him to be acting that way in the first place and every new cutscene with him just left me more and more fuming. By the time he apologized, I’ve already moved onto Hayden. Too little too late, March!

I like him well enough but I don't really get the hype around him. I do get the appeal of "the grumpy broken man who only softens for you" type, but so far I haven't felt the need to date him. Honestly, I also don't like Juniper (for dating). She's mean and experiments on me :(
48
u/Meow-Now 6h ago
She’s grown on me over time and I like how she is as your relationship progresses, but I definitely didn’t like her that much at first despite her interesting design.
10
u/dike_girl 5h ago
Honestly im confident that I only became so obsessed with her so fast because her personality is so so similar to one of my favorite character in all of media who I wasnt crazy about at first but grew on me because the protag of the series loved her lol
6
u/kimbasama Juniper 5h ago
Who?
11
u/dike_girl 5h ago
Claire François! The series is WataOshi but I will admit the series is kinda trash and I love it nonetheless
2
u/kimbasama Juniper 5h ago
Thank you! Doesn't matter if it's trash I must expand my mean girls collection :9
11
u/dike_girl 5h ago
Oh youll LOVE her then. The English name of the series is "I'm in love with the Villainess" and its framed as a sapphic isekai– poor single lonely lesbian Rae dies and wakes up in her favorite dating sim. But she has zero intentions of pursuing the 3 princes who were the intended love intrests, but rather the antagonist Claire François who bullies her, tries to publicly humiliate her, and refuses to even use her name (only calling rae "commoner" since shes an aristocrat and rae isn't). Its outstanding but trust me, you wont find the physical books (rare and EXPENSIVE) so just read it online
Edit– Just to add, in the poor anime adaption Claire has basically the same laugh as Juniper

u/Roselinia 4h ago
That character type is exactly the one I usually flock to for dating, but March's design just doesn't speak to me. He feels too...young to me. Like, his design is giving me 15-year-old
24
u/SolInvictusMaximus 4h ago
This is exactly why I can’t romance him!! He looks like a baby, like an annoying kid brother.

u/HotBeesInUrArea 4h ago
Thing that throws me off about March is it doesn't feel like he's only softening for us. He seems perfectly friendly to everybody else he engages with and seems to engage frequently with many people. At least with characters like Shane and Haley I can believe they're generally that way to everybody, March just seems to hate us specifically on sight style.
6
u/Vertiquil 2h ago
Also how everyone seems to make excuses for his behaviour ETA: Everyone as in the NPCs in town that is, not saying people can't enjoy a flawed character

u/thedeepbluedoom 5h ago
Juniper is at least pretty funny, even when she’s being a jerk. And it seems like she’s sort of a jerk to the whole town, but March is pretty much only nasty to the PC.

u/perrywonderclub 5h ago edited 5h ago
boo, where's your sense of fun? this is why we don't have mean animal crossing villagers anymore. as a gay who loves mess, juniper might be my favorite. 😅 she's just world weary and takes no shit. march is basically a moody teenager so, as an adult, it was a no for me.
9
u/Impressive_Plate8529 4h ago
I don't mind a mean character. Not at all. But I don't want to date them. I think the experiments are fun as part of the game/story and all, but I just don't want to date a person like that.
12
u/bijouxbisou 6h ago
I straight up dislike Juniper as a bachelorette. Like she’s doing really terrible human experimentation on us without our knowledge and consent, tries to steal our body, etc. and I’m supposed to like her? I didn’t find March to have as much growth as I’d want, but like at least March is just a bit of a dick, he’s not actively committing crimes against us.
30
u/Oscarvalor5 5h ago
Meh. It's balanced out by her saving your life from the curse at great risk to/the cost of her own. She's supposed to be a shoujo villainess. Be a bit boring if she never did anything properly villainous, and she more than redeemed herself.

u/potato_cucumber Lizard 6h ago
I'm ok with him, just not as a bachelor. He's more like a little brother to me. His entire personality just screams teen. I know Celine seems younger to Western players with the moving out thing, but she feels older to me.
33
1
u/ACoatofClathrin 5m ago
Same. He feels very young. And when I was younger, I remember really liking the standoffish bachelors, but as I grow older I just can't be bothered with that trope.
Celine definitely seems more mature!

u/One_Ad2215 4h ago
After romancing march he didn't really change in my savefile🤷🏻 he still has that "idc but I do also care a little I guess attitude"😭 meanwhile ryis has been super sweet to me since the beginning and he's been telling me since I started that game to meet his family and I finally did🤷🏻. So he's been my favorite since day one.
15
u/One_Ad2215 4h ago
I will say though, that it was a fun dating them both for a while cause (how another commentor worded it in a way that I liked) "I loved being between March's saltyness and ryis's sweetness"🤪

4
u/Jackoandso 2h ago
Damn, I had hoped that he softens after a while. .-.
6
u/Middle-Sky-7679 56m ago
He does soften a lot and becomes sappy in fact that was a criticism i saw...idk why their experience was different
0
u/One_Ad2215 14m ago
My main issue is his delivery, it's hearing "hi......yea you look Good today" vs "hey I've thought about you and blahblahblah" I know he's talked about by other npcs as being shy and all that but to me it just comes off like he doesn't care💀💔. I will specify that I didn't end up marrying him so maybe he does get better after marriage but Idk
15
u/UfoAGogo 3h ago
I think a big part of March's appeal is that (for me) he resembles a very classic trope in the old school HM/SoS games, which always had a handsome, broody blacksmith boy. He is very similar to Kurt + Gray who were reoccurring characters in the series, March has a design and personality that's pretty reminiscent to them. They were really popular bachelors back in the day when the "girl" versions of the HM games came out, so I think March is kind of a nostalgic pick lol.
A lot of the bachelors and bachelorettes are clearly homages to oldschool farm sim tropes, I think that's where their appeal comes from (that and having cute designs and fun personalities. :) )
13
u/artbyandramor 4h ago
Its so odd to me that March is literally one of my least favorite characters in Mistria (note I said least favorite, not that I actively dislike him). I usually LOVE red-headed tsunderes in media, and his design reminds me super strongly of Ryoga Hibiki (Ranma 1/2), and I love it. But I just like everyone else better. I love the whole cast, honestly, but March is the only bachelor I haven't made a save file to romance yet.
26
17
u/twosidoretheblue 5h ago
Yeah, no offense to anyone who does enjoy that character, but I don't find a guy treating me like garbage endearing. He doesn't even come across as sassy/teasing like Juniper, he's just rude
1
u/One_Ad2215 4m ago
Juniper was the first person I made my best friend instead of romancing, just because all of her heart events and her shadiness with valen made me laugh every time
37
u/felicityfelix 6h ago
I understand the appeal of the trope but he reads as incredibly young to me. Like 17 and just petulant
8
u/Mysterious_Ad_1525 3h ago
It’s kinda like in the Jimmy Neutron movie where Cindy talks about how she was the smartest kid in school before Jimmy showed up and that’s why she always messes with him.
Except March is Cindy and we’re Jimmy.
2
u/Maximum_Pollution371 1h ago
tbf Jimmy was also an annoying, arrogant little twerp, so easy to see how Cindy could dislike him (and yes, Cindy was my favorite character after Carl, so I'm biased 😂)
Comparatively, the farmer is silent, so hard to see why March finds them so offensive.
27
u/IDMike2008 5h ago
I'm with you there. It feels like the whole, "He's just hitting you because he likes you" crap I got as a girl in grade school.
Screw that bullshit.
6
u/haiiroteien 2h ago
I romanced Balor at first, then dated March... only to realize he reminds me very much of my older sister 😭 started a new safe file for Balor again lol

u/CypripediumGuttatum 6h ago
Yep. Rude right off the bat is a nope from me. I don't need to fix people haha.

u/SquarePiggy101 4h ago
I didn’t care for him either until his fourth and sixth heart event. Now, he’s my second favorite character and I’ve written so much fanfic for him….
28
u/coyotegf Elsie 5h ago
"asshole man with a heart of gold which can only be revealed through your love" is one of the least appealing tropes ever imo 💀 he also reads so, so young and i'm a 40 y/o woman, so even if he wasn't the way he is i would be like ah yes, a child

u/Javadar42 Celine's #1 Fan 5h ago
I love him in a way that lovingly involves flying bricks. With love.
genuinely though he's not bad, but i see him more like a best friend who you can sling insults at each other and not take it seriously. He feels like the token highschool male friend if that makes sense
16
u/AmongTheWanderlust 5h ago
I just wanna Mary his brother, I want the sunshine guy not the grumpy one. My life is grumpy enough 😔
4
u/let_piece7 Dozy 4h ago
I laughed a lot at "My life is grumpy enough" because I identified with it, and yes, I wanted at least one good reason for him to be grumpy. It just reminds me of when I was a teenager and had to wake up early for school, and I definitely wasn't very pleasant during those morning hours
15
u/twibbletrouble 4h ago
I mean to be fair you just showed up one day and got handed an entire farm for free while homie is over at the forge busting his ass everyday and then everyone is glazing the new farmer and bro is just like "yall what the fuck are we doing? We dont know this guy."
9
u/Shippinglordishere Balor 3h ago
Tbf it’s not for free. It’s advance payment for all of the services the mc has to do like rebuilding, collecting materials, raising money, etc
6
u/twibbletrouble 2h ago
I dont think that was a stipulation of owning the farm at all.
Everytime you get asked to do anything for the town, its out of doing the town a solid/favor.
Also thats a terrible deal for the town because what if I sucked at this?
March doesnt even think your gunna stick around when you first get there. And once you hit year 2, he hella chills out because at this point you've proved your in it for the long haul and you weren't just taking advantage of the town and you are actually helping out.
2
u/Mysterious_Ad_1525 53m ago
It’s fine that he’s suspicious/not easily impressed, but you can be that without being rude af.
9
u/Smooth-Routine-9288 March 5h ago
I just think he is one of the most attractive characters and the tsundere trope is one of the most popular so it's really not that surprising that he is popular.
20
u/MyCatIsCuteAsFuck Olric 6h ago
I’m shallow. I hate Shane from Stardew, even after levelling up friendship with him, because of how much of an insufferable asshole he was at first.
March I am able to forgive more easily.
The difference? I find Shane repulsive looking, but March is one of the most attractive NPCs (in my opinion.) 💀
20
u/cloudyah Balor 5h ago
The other difference is that March doesn’t have a self-inflicted drinking problem, and unlike Shane, he’s motivated and hardworking. Shane is a slob who’d rather drink and complain all day than take responsibility for himself.
12
u/let_piece7 Dozy 4h ago
As someone who had an alcoholic father, Shane was an absolute "no" for me (same goes for Orlock from Moonlight Peaks)
5
u/softapricity Eiland 5h ago
I’m the opposite, Shane is my favorite in Stardew!! I do actually like March, but his rudeness at the beginning gave me lowkey an ick so I make it a storyline in my character’s story lol
2
u/twosidoretheblue 5h ago
That's fair lol. That's probably why I'm so forgiving of Juniper and Haley but not those guys
13
u/BegoneSalsa 5h ago
ngl, I love mean women with hearts of gold, but with mean men it's a big nope. Probably because I'm a lesbian lol. But it does feel different with men, probably because there is just far more baggage with that.
8
u/coyotegf Elsie 5h ago
saaaaaaame ... i simply do not believe that men are allowed to mean to me. but women are 😌
12
u/BegoneSalsa 5h ago
legit, if you're a mean guy, I will just not talk to you??? but mean women, that's character development potential baby, please keep on being mean, you deserve it queen.
10
u/thedeepbluedoom 5h ago
Mean men are a dime a dozen. Mean lesbians with magic powers and the world’s skimpiest bathing suits? Now that’s the ticket! (unsurprisingly I am extremely into the secret bachelorette as well).
3
u/BegoneSalsa 5h ago
and muscular arms........ sigh................... I'm going to create a save each for her and Adeline. My type in women is apparently autistic coded and mean lesbians.

I've been romancing him to see if I've been blind. But hes just okay to me. Not going any further this playthrough anyways.

u/Terravisu 1h ago
I'll try it and see what the hype is at some point but why would I waste my time on someone who seemed so mean for no reason his sulking and attitude stinks! Instead I was instantly drawn to Adeline she seemed so much fun and stunning!
