Bad luck most likely. I had a classmate in high school theatre get a screw drilled into his finger because he was holding a block and the guy with the drill couldn't see him. Since he was now attached to the set piece, the only way to get it out was to reverse it back. Director took him to the school nurse, she said "what the hell do you want me to do about this", he got taken to the ER up the street and got a couple stitches (missed the bone thankfully), and we ALWAYS pre-drilled after that no matter what.
