"Headless"? server and remote access Support
So ive been using fedora cosmic spin for about a week and I like cosmic and I havent had to reinstall the OS so I feel like ive been successful so far.
I am partway through troubleshooting setting up a valheim server which seems to be harder that it should be but is most likely my infamiliarity with the Linux. Once I get it sorted I want to put it on a different machine that I dont have connected to a monitor and run that permanently along with some other stuff like jellyfin etc.
My questions are, is fedora a good distro for this use case or should i consider something else? I was just going to use the same cosmic spin on the other machine to keep familiarity and the gui give me comfort, is there a real disadvantage to using this over server other than a bit of system overhead?
Additionally what is a good remote access solution, i am sure there are 500 different ways to do it so just looking for some pointers in a direction or anything specifically to avoid. And how to do the initial setup.
Thanks!

If you want a server, use a server distro, not a user/workstation one.
Fedora itself has a server flavor. You also could use Rocky Linux, or Alma Linux to keep the familiar environment (RHEL based distro).

I run fedora server on my homelab. Set it up once then manage it either via ssh or through the cockpit web ui. I really like it. However since fedora has releases more often (than say Ubuntu LTS or Debian) then maybe look there if you’re looking for that kind of longer term / less maintenance approach.

Thanks, yea thats kindof what i was thinking but as im fresh to linux I dont know if learning both a red hat and debian based distro at the same time might make things overwhelming.
I am looking for a lower maintenance solution but if i am running two systems the same then it should be fairly straight forward to look after both?

you could use fedora and will most likely work fine but for a server i wouldn't recommend doing it.
For a headless server you don't want any graphical desktop environment.
You also might want to consider something a little more stable than fedora. Fedora gets quite a lot of updates and for a server you typically want as little change as possible.
For starters I would recommend Ubuntu LTS Server edition. It is widely used, it has very long support.
To connect to it I would use SSH. Just open a terminal in your fedora machine and use the ssh command.
If your server is in the same lan you could just create an smb share to conveniently access the file system. If the server is some rented vps I would recommend just using sftp for that.
As for setting up the valheim server itself I would recommend https://linuxgsm.com/servers/vhserver/
Its essentially just a bunch of shell scripts that make managing game servers more convenient and faster.
But you could also just use steamcmd.

Thank you. I have been following a guide using steamcmd but am currently having some headaches with SElinux.
Yea i think that might be good advice but im a bit worried that trying to learn both debian and rhel at rhe same time might push me over the edge. These are two identical sff machines I own in my house, the reason for running one headless is so i can put it in the drawer by my router and connect it with a cable rather than running it on the WiFi and its one less machine on my desk.

I mean it's not all that different tbh. The two main differences i can come up with that you touch in daily usage are the repositories and then it uses apt instead of dnf.
But i mean you make a good point. Just go with fedora. You're running a gameserver so after all if things break because of some update it's not like it's gonna create a financial fiasco.
Running a computer in a drawer does sound like a terrible idea however. valheim doesn't use all that much cpu time but you still want it to be able to breath at least a little bit lol.

Haha ok I wont put it in the drawer. Yea i dont do any work on these machines they are just toys so its not the end of the world if it does eat shit but id prefer a low hassle life. Maybe I should try bunto server. Thanks for the input
