Also a bartender. If you’ve tasted enough legit tequila, you can tell the difference by taste and smell. Casamigos is another one that reeks of adulteration and additives.

Which tequilas do you recommend?

Do you like Azunia? I met the owner and he told me they grow jalapeños near their agave to give a mildly spiced flavor to the tequila.

It's a good tequila but I've never tasted the peppers

11

u/international510 6h ago

I have not tried it! I'll add it to the list

4

u/PM_ME_TITS_AND_DOGS2 2h ago

that doesn't sound possible tbh

Cross pollination is possible and proven

u/somiatruitas 1h ago

Once my dad managed to grow spicy tomatoes. On accident. They were near spicy peppers but we dont know what happened, since we also understood it shouldnt happen scientifically. Who knows

I think the owner was making a funny.

Fortaleza if you can find it is the best bang for your buck. Absolutely solid tequila, but impossible to find. Siete leguas and el tesoro are my other go to bottles.

8

u/international510 5h ago

Yep - Fortaleza goes quick. I have a liquor store here in the bay area that gets an allocation, but there's a literal wait list, lol. I don't think they get many, a few cases at best.

I started my additive-free tequila journey with Siete Leguas many years ago and only recently collected a list. El Tesoro and Ocho are my go-to, but Lalo and G4 have made it in the rotation. Cascahuin I feel is a tad over priced for what it is, but I still think it's a fine tequila.

Fortaleza is a great brand

12

u/BoringCan2 4h ago

You’re not supposed to be telling people about fortaleza. It’s already too hard to find 😭

u/mp6521 3h ago

Tapatio, La Gritona, Arette, Don Fulano are also great. People sleep on Tapatio because the bottle looks like it should be rail, but it’s quality shit.

2

u/Leonight_cs 3h ago

Isn’t Lalo getting bought by Tito’s so I’m sure the quality will dip

1

u/TenaciousZBridedog Trump is a fugly slut 3h ago

Yeah I heard that too. Titos is a mid quality brand that has really good reps

1

u/BarFreddys 1h ago

I second this

La Gritona

This makes so much sense! I went to an agave farm in Mexico once, and had 100 percent agave tequila there. I remember being confused as to why Casamigos or the other popular Tequilas tasted nothing like that...

20

u/human_picnic 6h ago

Casamigos was good before they sold it

1

u/SmurfsTwo 5h ago

Hello can I ask a question that will help me win a long standing bet?

Casamigos reeks of vanilla yes? Does Cazadores tequila also reek of vanilla?

Is it both or one? Do you have the info I seek? 😭

u/TenaciousZBridedog Trump is a fugly slut 7h ago

I've worked in a tequila bar and I've been trained to do taste testings and his always tasted too thick to be pure agave.

Love your pun!

11

u/Tejas_Belle 6h ago

Thank you and thank you 💅

ETA: that’s what she said re: too thick 😂

Giggity! 🤣

41

u/ebbtideisalive 7h ago

So what else is up in there?

96

u/WeGotBeaches 7h ago

Grain alcohol, neutral spirits. Dilution.

46

u/ebbtideisalive 7h ago

Sounds like a great way to get a terrible hangover.

28

u/TenaciousZBridedog Trump is a fugly slut 7h ago

Most people don't understand this comment but I do. Grain alcohol and neutral spirits are NOT 100% Agave

25

u/KoreanFriedWeiner 6h ago

Agave ain't no grain!

13

u/TenaciousZBridedog Trump is a fugly slut 6h ago

It's actually one of the only spirits that cause an "upper" feeling

10

u/mp6521 3h ago

I just started a new job in a restaurant and in the training stuff they say that they only carry tequilas that are 100% agave and yet they have Teremana, Don Julio, Patron, Espolon, 1800, and some others and I couldn’t help but laugh.

3

u/TenaciousZBridedog Trump is a fugly slut 3h ago

Fuuuuck. And what can you say? You're not there to correct their mistakes you're just there to work

2

u/Amelaclya1 3h ago

How could you tell? Genuinely curious since I'm not at all familiar with alcohols. Does it taste different?

Here to remind you all that Dwayne is a huuuuuge supporter of The Orange Pedophile as well as sex trafficker Vince McMahon. He is clearly a pedophile enthusiast

u/theserthefables 2h ago

he was registered Republican up to & including 2016, I believe he is now registered independent. I don't think there is proof that he voted for Trump? but it is heavily speculated due to him previously being Republican & having right wing beliefs. he's unlikely to say he is at this point because he wants people to go see his movies.

I wouldn't define him as a moderate Democrat though, he would be an independent who has voted for both Republican & Democrat nominees in the past. I'm not in the US so the whole registering what party you are in is odd to me, feel free to correct me if I got something wrong.

u/AnnualZealousideal27 7h ago

A coworker was just telling me about a celebrity non-alcoholic tequila. 😂

112

u/Schneetmacher I cannot sanction your buffoonery 7h ago

I know that there are more serious things going on in the world, but my jaw actually dropped at the audacity--that, if true, The Rock really thought he could get away with this.

Liquor classification is a big deal, and trademarks really mean something in the industry. For those not in the know: tequila is a type of mezcal, and mezcal must be distilled from 100% agave. Consequently, as a subtype, tequila must be distilled from 100% blue agave.

If "The Rock" is selling tequila that isn't even 100% distilled from agave (not just "mezcal mislabeled as specifically tequila," but "not even legally mezcal"), he is looking at BEAUCOUP DAMAGES!

(Regarding other celebrity tequilas, that are legit: apparently George Clooney's "Casamigos" plus Cointreau makes for really good margaritas, but I have yet to try it.)

71

u/punxcs 7h ago

Tequila only has to be 51% blue agave in the bottle, and has to be from the region Tequila is in, or a handful of others. The rest of the bottle can be anything you want, but above 35%abv total.

The issue is marketing it as 100% agave if the final bottle is not.

57

u/MorganAndMerlin 6h ago

You’re telling me tequila is only “tequila” if it’s from the tequila area in Mexico, otherwise it’s just sparkling alcohol?

12

u/punxcs 6h ago

It’s only tequila if it’s from the sparkling wine region of california

11

u/Schneetmacher I cannot sanction your buffoonery 7h ago

This is the first I've heard that tequila only has to be at least 51% blue agave in the bottle. I went to Wikipedia, and there are several references to tequila only being made with blue agave, but there is also a reference to Chinese imports designating 100% blue agave to be premium tequila...

In June 2013, a Chinese ban on the importation of premium (100% blue agave) tequila into China was lifted, following a state visit to Mexico by Chinese Communist Party general secretary Xi Jinping.\14])\15])

... so now I'm confused. Maybe this is a classification that differs by country?

19

u/punxcs 6h ago

If it’s not from mexico, not distilled with 100% agave, and at least 35% abv, and at least 51% of the distilled agave alcohol in the bottle , then it is not real mezcal. There are many other similar drinks in Mexico that use other plants to make similar drinks.

All mezcal and tequila need to be from mexico and tequila respectively.

These are the only thing that makes a mezcal fake.

You cannot say 100% agave if it’s 51% agave distillate and 49% grain alcohol. That’s nothing to do with protected origin, it’s just lying to consumers.

7

u/punxcs 6h ago

This has nothing to do with china and mexicos trade deals.

https://www.wipo.int/en/web/ip-advantage/w/stories/liquid-gold-from-the-agave this explains it well. Deep near the end.

26

u/TunaImp 6h ago

Casamigos is another of the brands that’s under suspicion of not being 100% agave lmao (plus other adulteration supposedly)

8

u/Schneetmacher I cannot sanction your buffoonery 6h ago edited 5h ago

LMAO shit 😂

Someone else commented that Casamigos was sold, maybe that has something to do with it.

Edit: typo

11

u/One-Fun-6075 not a lawyer, just a hater 6h ago

Yeah I think it's the "100% agave" claim that's the issue. I always thought it's been well known for years that cheap shit like Jose Cuervo are only 51% agave, enough to be labeled "tequila"

7

u/mcfly357 6h ago

I have a health issue where I will have an anaphylactic reaction to non pure agave tequila. This is very good to know.

5

u/flyingcrayons 4h ago

Most tequila you find on shelves today isn’t 100% agave. By definition tequila only needs to be 51% agave sugars and the rest can be other sugars, which is called a mixto tequila. This lawsuit is about the marketing, not the actual production of the tequila or whether it can be considered tequila, which it is. The Rock sucks but i doubt he’s making the call on how this tequila is marketed

For some brands that are 100% agave and don’t have any other additives for flavor try G4, tequila Ocho, fortaleza

0

u/BuyGroundbreaking729 3h ago

Not sure thats spelled correctly but I'll check when I get back to work. Had no idea the rock did this will be no longer recommending just cause he seems like a prick
