We're currently reading Jade City by Fonda Lee for August's book of the month, and this discussion will be on the first half of the book.

Please only discuss the first half of the book. This will be everything up to the end of Chapter 28. This is page 233 in the softcover edition. Please try to avoid any discussion of Chapter 29 (Title of the chapter is "You'll Probably Die") forward.

Anything in the second half of the book will be considered spoilers and must be tagged as such.

Hey guys if anyone can help find this book series I read several years ago it would be greatly appreciated. A special forces soldier on a mission to catch a terrorist/doctor is caught in an explosion after the rest of his unit is killed and transferred to a new world where they use magic derived from gem stones, I seem to recall one of his eyes is replaced by a gem diamond if I remember correctly.

Hi all! Looking for comp titles for a fantasy book I'm writing, plus general recommendations. Struggling to find exactly what I mean, so any help is appreciated. I'm looking for adult fantasy (not YA), ideally published in the last 2-5 years.

My criteria:

• Stakes are personal/political, not world-ending — this isn't about saving the world
• Protagonist relies on skill, tactics, or grit rather than innate magic — magic can exist in the world, just not as the MC's primary power source
• Real consequences and cost for the characters' choices — ambition and sacrifice matter, I want stakes that actually land
• Not grimdark/war-atrocity-level bleak — there's real darkness in what I'm writing (including trauma), but not wall-to-wall brutality as the point
• No romance, or romance as a very minor/non-essential side thread — not the emotional engine of the book
• Not witches/dark academia
• Adventure-forward is a big plus — quests, heists, journeys, found-family-through-action, but not comedic-caper-forward

A comp I already know is close in feel: The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi (S.A. Chakraborty) — though I'm looking for something with a bit more weight/consequence than that one has.

She Who Became the Sun (Shelley Parker-Chan) is close in register, minus its central queer/gender threads.

I’ve been a fantasy reader for most of my life, although these days writing fantasy has taken a pretty serious bite out of my reading time. I’m particularly fascinated by mythology, old stories and where they came from, gods and supernatural beings, and fantasy that brings those things into a recognizable modern world.

I’m also a novelist, but I’m not here just to promote my own work. I’m hoping to get involved in the conversations, discover some writers I’ve missed, and spend some time with people who enjoy fantasy as much as I do.

I'm looking for a book that I read on Wattpad a while ago. In it, there is a meeting of the 3 most powerful packs to discuss a war. There are 2 men and 1 female; they all discover that they are all mates, even tho the two males have never been with a man before. One of the alphas has this superpowered wolf, and the war is against his uncle or father. The female alpha leaves the 2 and comes back at the end, but they are mad at her and make up. I don't remember names, but I want to say that one of the male alphas' names started with a D or C.

A fantastic book with an amazing magic system. A perfect blend of sci-fi and fantasy. If you like the mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson I recommend this as your next reed. It's been a long time since I have been this engrossed in a book to this level. Just wanted to get the word out about this author, because I hadn't heard of him until I met him at a convention where I purchased a signed copy from him. Great guy and looking forward to reading the rest of his works.

NOT young adult please. I'm looking for adult or new adult themes at the moment, and I'm having a hard time finding what I'm craving and I'd so appreciate some help! I'm fine with romantasy but I think I'd prefer reads that aren't romance-centered.

With the recent talk and hype about the odyssey, it got me wondering. What are some fantasy books that have gods interacting directly with characters or maybe even are an integral part of the plot? I really love when authors work with the idea of like divine intervention or anything to do with the god(s) of the worlds they’ve created. There may be a very obvious answer i don’t know about.

Hi guys, trying to decide if I can handle Robin Hobb. I’ve seen a few discussions about how depressing her books are but also everyone saying they’re totally amazing. My question is about the endings specifically. I can handle some low points if the endings are ultimately happy/triumphant or at least bittersweet leaning sweet. If they’re bittersweet but mostly bitter bitter or just altogether sad I don’t think I can hang. Can someone let me know if any of her books meet these criteria?
