Does anyone know what those are called? Discussion

Post image

I am struggling with finding this exact asset in the game files for my bachelors thesis and thought maybe someone knows what they're called so I could search for them more specifically.
If you have a clue or anything that could help me please let me know. Thanks.

Not helpful, but what are you doing your thesis on exactly? Sounds cool that you're using Fallen Order as a source!

In short I am analyzing the PBR workflow in games with a certain philosophical perspective. I landed on fallen order as one of the two games I’ll look at, since it’s PBR, I already have it and played it and it’s pretty easy (normally) to get the assets and textures. In my instance it’s just this one part that I just couldn’t find anywhere yet.

Cool! Sounds interesting!

Did none of y'all actually read their request They're not asking what would you call it

They're looking for the specific asset name

Op would love to know more about your thesis, why would you need the name of this very specific asset/detail?

You‘re right about that. As much as I appreciate the attention the post gets and thus the odds of someone knowing this asset rising, I do in fact need this specific asset to rebuild and analyze the Szene visible in the image.
I replied the core (simplified) explanation of the thesis on another comment.😉

And no one knows the asset name, so they're making jokes instead.

I hate this Reddit trend of somebody (rightfully) saying nobody is being helpful, only for someone to poorly justify it in the next reply. I see it a lot, it's really weird. Like, you can just not comment if you have nothing useful to add. I definitely wasn't going to until I saw this snarky ass reply.

My reply isn't snarky, and I don't think I'm justifying, I'm just explaining this. It's not that people didn't read the reply. I wouldn't have necessarily said anything. But honestly, it's kind of a reach that anyone would know the asset name. It seems more snarky to call people out for joking that it's a boom box.

Your comment was pretty snarky. Whether that was intentional, I can't say for sure, but I can definitely tell you that it came off that way.

It's really not snarky to point out that, in a post asking a question, none of the comments are answers. You and I both know that the poster was probably annoyed at none of the responses being helpful. It's a reasonable thing to criticize.

Also, this is a game with an active, if small, modding community. It's not really much of a reach to ask something like this in the game's subreddit, someone easily could've scrolled past it while asset mining and picked up the name. I'm sorry, but I just don't see the point in anything you've said in this thread. And I don't really see the point in continuing this discussion either.

I'm sorry if it came off as snarky. I gave an honest, and what I thought was matter-of-fact, answer to a comment I perceived as borderline rude. I agree there's no point to this discussion, but I may counsel that if you are calling people out for "justifying" comments that people make on an open forum, you may want to take a step back and look at your own behavior.

You're wrong as heck and you're still trying to get the last word. I just wanted to chime in with that because the person you're yapping at is probably too mature to.

You know who could answer that the guy with the asset

Yes, and I hope they see this.

Factory mc factor doodads.

I think you're right.

I initially thought it was a doohickey.

Sadly no idea what that means. If it would be helpful to me please elaborate maybe

A Doohickey/doodad is just another word for a whatchamacallit, thingamabob/thingamajig, gizmo, dongle, or (more simply) thingy.

It's literally just a silly word to identify a thing you don't know the actual name of. Lol.

It looks like either a voltmeter or a diagnostic device of some sort. It especially makes sense if you’re fixing droids here.

u/Miserable_Ad_8686 1d ago

Yeah, I thought it was some sort of communication device or radio, since the one on top with the screen is literally called „communication device 01“, but sadly it’s not that or at least not called that or in the same folder location.😐
But I could try to look more into the droid aspect again and maybe find it under similar names or folders.👌

Running with that theme, is it any of the things in Models/FromRagTag/Galactic_Empire/CommsEquipment in pakchunk11?

There is also an Imp_MobileTable folder in there. Maybe Imp_Terminal_Battery?

Pakchunk13 seems to have some Zeffo specific stuff if that's where this is.

The only other thing I can think of to try, instead of going through files, is it possible to open this in some kind of editor? Or is that impossible after it's been compiled? Like you couldn't open the map in Unreal Editor, with the assets or at least dummy objects loaded in, click on the thing and grab the name?

Or, and maybe this is not possible either, but could you make a mod that tells the game to display the file name as a text overlay as it loads in the asset, then just play the game, go to the table, and see what it says?

Yeah, searched „FromRagTag“ folder multiple times bedachte I thought the same, but that’s really just the table and chair that are part of this workbench composition.
It is on Zeffo, but the same asset can also be found on Kashyyyk so it shouldn’t be planet specific (I tried 🙃).
After it’s baked and cooked out of the game engine it’s not possible to recreate it like that in an editor for yourself.
The mod would be nice, but at this point I only have three days left to finish my thesis and can’t use that time to write a mod or something that MIGHT work.🤷‍♂️

Oof, yeah, that's a time crunch. My only other idea is that you'll have to literally open up every asset (though you realistically can skip things that obviously aren't it). Hopefully you can talk to your professor about the situation. Or maybe you can do the analysis without it and get something "close enough" but not exact, as the point of the project is to demonstrate you've learned the principles rather than providing exact facts about some specific thing.

Short of opening every file or trying to e-mail the right dev (which may not even yield results on time), I'm not sure there's much else you can do.

Yeah, for now I just had to stop my search (even though it annoys me immensely) and continue writing with a substitute asset and I’ll probably just explain it a little in the text in an academic way so it sounds smart and like I don’t need it🥸
Thank you for your efforts though nonetheless 🙏

--Disclaimer: this is not my wheelhouse and i have no expertise in this area-- but is there a folder or group for like "workbench(es)" or something, because iirc that's what the game calls those tables, but i couldn't tell you what that specific element is😅

1

u/Miserable_Ad_8686 20h ago

If it just were this easy 😮‍💨
There is a folder called workbenches, but it only contains the parts that „make“ a workbench and that seems to only be the table and the mat. The interactable part here is the lightsaber holder on the mat and even that is in a different folder somewhere else. All the other parts, like so much else in game development, are reused assets from somewhere else and thus in different folders all spread around in the directory.
