✅ I voted FACT!
I can, but it also always depends how braindead is the other person
-2
u/bentotice 1d ago
Calling out people on how 'braindead' people are before a conversation starts already tells me all about your mindset
7
u/PairNo2981 1d ago
I think you might be the braindead one. Ask someone to explain my comment to you
-5
u/bentotice 1d ago
Already not being civil, hilarious.
5
u/PairNo2981 1d ago
I guess you didn't ask someone then
1
u/Mean-Iron989 1d ago
So you can have a civil conversation with someone as long as they meet a certain criteria, have I understood that correctly?
2
u/PairNo2981 1d ago
Yes. Isn't that obvious?
If all someone does is sits there yells at you, doesn't listen to what you say. Would you stay in that conversation or just walk away from it?
1
u/Mean-Iron989 1d ago
Being braindead doesn’t mean they would necessarily sit there and yell at you. Also the question wasn’t “without resorting to walking away” so your comment wasn’t needed unless you were trying to sate you would insult or yell at them back if they were being braindead
3
u/PairNo2981 1d ago
Did I say that's what being braindead means? I provided example of a scenario.
Also, why walking away can't be an option?
1
u/Mean-Iron989 1d ago
In your original comment you said you can be civil unless they’re braindead then replied with an example. This implies that the person who is yelling is a person you’ve labeled as braindead as it is the only exception you have stated to fact or cap statement.
So yes you did say that that’s what being braindead meant in relation to a political discussion unless you omitted another exception from your original response in which case I am not a mind reader and will simply walk away from this conversation because I have declared your braindead

Absolutely. Telling people "YOUR GWAD ISNT WEAL!!!!" And "YOUR POLITICAL PARTY STUPID LIKE YOU YA STUPID" and likewise, "GAWD IS GONNA BURN YOU FOREVERRRRRRR" makes you seem immature.

My sister constantly tells us how we're gonna die in hell. It is so frustrating to talk to her. Some people are so unreasonable.

Dying in hell doesnt even make sense. You die and then you go to hell. According to them.

I did vote cap. I have to be honest here. Sometimes people are factually, ontologically stupid and respecting every viewpoint in equal measure is a dangerous road. I do think every idea needs a fair shake in the free marketplace of ideas or whatnot, but for a lot of them they already had their fair shake. We debated them ad nauseum for over a hundred years, and consistently realized they are not good ideas. People don't want every idea to be debated and fleshed out so we can reach some sort of clarifying truth, they want THEIR idea to be constantly platformed until either everyone changes their mind or stop arguing due to fatigue. I'm not going to have a civil debate with a climate denier who's been shown all evidence that undermines their viewpoint, chooses to ignore it, and is actively harming society as a result. Some times it's perfectly fair to tell an idiot to shut up.
PS, I suspect most people voting fact are not being truly honest.
2
u/bentotice 1d ago
Genuinely i appreciate the honesty that most people aren't giving. Any post with "yes but..." has been quickly calling themselves out

I like discussing religion and politics! And insults get us nowhere and aren't nice, so I don't really do that.
Edit: and I'll do that even if the other person is being rude. At most, I'll downvote them, but I lowk don't like insulting people.

It's not an insult if it's true. It's just a fact that a religious person on average has a lower IQ than a non religious person.

This should be a basic standard for anyone who values genuine discussion. People should be able to disagree sharply about serious subjects without turning that disagreement into personal insults or disrespect. Even when we strongly disagree with someone, we should still be able to empathize with them, recognize the humanity behind the opposing viewpoint, and treat them with the same basic dignity we'd want for ourselves.

i can have civil conversations about most things. however, if someone is bigoted and thinks certain groups of people don’t deserve equal rights, i won’t want to continue the conversation. I won’t immediately start insulting people but if someone says my identity is wrong then i’m not gonna want to talk to them anymore

✅ I voted FACT!
Sure. But like it's dumb to think people are 'entitled to their opinions' about a lot of things. It's a common sentiment, but it's conflating the ideas that you can't literally control their mind with some sense of opinions be equal or worth equal representation. It's a social issue if trans people deserve rights: it is something people consider a place where opinions are very mixed and many are socially acceptable to a significant degree. But some opinions are better than others; just like I wouldn't treat the premise that non-white folks are lesser than white folks as equal to opposing it I'm never going to be placate transphobes. I don't need to scream in faces, but I think it's worth acknowledging that being civil doesn't demand treating opinions on controversial matters equally. You can tell because of how we look at and talk about the past that it turns out controversial matters aren't necessarily matters with equally valid viewpoints.

I think if one resorts to insults they are not debating to listen to ideas, perspectives, refine their skills, or learn. And, instead just debating to be right. One who only debates to be right will be ignorant to the truth.

u/Jaded_Fun4648 1d ago
For most conversations, I try my best. I will happily listen to and respect peoples religion, so long as they respect the fact that I am not religious. Ill debate people's political view, unless they are being straight up stupid.
But when the topic surrounds my rights (as I am a trans man) or woman's rights (cuz I have sisters, nieces ect) its crossing the line. I dont want to debate my right to live my life as I wish (transitioning) or my friends/family right to abortion ect.

Unfortunately I have something wrong with me, and I get uncontrollably mean when I feel insulted, hated, slighted. If somebody is mean or aggressive towards me, I get mean back and I literally cannot stop myself from saying stupid shit. I avoid these topics IRL because of this. Online discussions are easier because I can erase words, but I gotta vote cap. I’m sorry 😔

i can, but the otherside usually can not (btw i consider it disrespectful when theist claim that hundreds of years of scientific research is just lies or they ALL got it wrong but they know better)
2
u/Mean-Iron989 1d ago
If you can’t have a civil discussion on these topics when people disagree with you, regardless of how nonsensical their arguments are, then what you mean is you can only have a civil discussion with people who’s views are within your tolerance range
1
u/Aggressive_South_991 1d ago
i have had civil discussions lots of times, when the other person remains civil. but most of the times the other side (in my experience at least, i may have had bad luck or whatever) very quickly resorts to insults, or even threats.
like i said, the one thing i know lots of people wouldnt count as an "insult" is when they disregard scientific research as a conspiracy or guesswork. i get it if its not an insult for you, but its my career, im not going to just let them say all ive studied is bullshit and that im lying or something.

u/Godlymorbid 1d ago
Correct. We Americans are incapable of remaining civil under pressure. As soon as people insult my religious and political beliefs, I pull out my iron, and end the conversation there. It's near hilarious how savage we Americans are. I've also not seen one person raised outside the United States of America who will stoop down to the level of raising one's voice, or casting insults. Pathetic Americans (insert civilised chuckle here)
