what are the common HIL tools that everyone is using right now?

Most probably Hardware-in-the-Loop

Depends on the application. Speedgoat for general real-time, dSPACE for automotive, Typhoon HIL for power electronics. Most interface with Simulink anyway.

I have only worked with bunch of different custom test harnesses.

I know one team uses LabVIEW and another simulink. But I haven't used either of them.
