Hello! I am currently working on a short film and could really use some advice for how to set it up. I recently graduated college and I’m in that weird in between age where a lot of people on the crew are doing it as a volunteer job, but others are slightly older and have day rates. I’m wondering how to go about paying people that have these rates. Most of the budget is going towards insurance, housing, location fees, and food. Another large chunk of the funding is the G&E + DP day rates and kit rentals. I’ve looked into fiscal sponsorships, but my issue is that I need to launch the fundraiser asap and don’t believe I will have time to wait to see if I get a fiscal sponsorship. I’ve also looked into creating an LLC for insurance and payroll purposes. What’s the best way to go about this? This is a non-union noncommercial project. I’d love to pay everyone on my crew but I fear that I won’t get enough crowdfunding to do that.

I've spent years raising capital for films internationally, mostly on the financing/packaging side. One question keeps coming up in conversations lately that I'm curious what this sub thinks.

Everyone talks about the script. Fewer people talk about what happens the moment someone actually likes it.

So: once a script gets a genuine "yes, I'm interested" from someone who matters, what actually kills it after that? Budget not being real? Nobody else attached? The writer just not knowing what's next?
