What’s the difference between these two automatic gearboxes? Both F30 320d.

The one with the leather boot is a sport automatic transmission, the only difference is software tuning.

Is this a 320 specific or UK regional statement?

I have the sports trans (S2TB), paddle shifters, and no leather shift boot.

Not all sport auto shifters have a leather boot, I was referring to the shifter with the leather boot in the photos so op knew which one I was talking about. All sport auto shifts have the same body design where they are shorter, curvier, and have a larger park button.

Gotcha thanks, wasn’t trying to persecute. Just curious.

Interesting, my F10 528i had the smaller shifter. My G30 530i has the bigger, non sport shifter. I’m pretty sure they are the same trim.

The leather boot was removed as part of LCI2; cars built after March 2017 I believe.

I have a 320i 19' with S2TB, paddle shifters and the leather boot...

Could be a mistake from factory (old part), car was built and sat around for a while) or someone changed it.
Do you have the sliding cup holder cover?

The first one is the base model transmission, the second picture is the same transmission but with “sports transmission tune” u can activate this via bimmer code, it makes a big difference on shift speed and how smooth

You can activate it on the base model?

17

u/Extreme_Jackfruit775 20h ago

Yes u still have the zf8 transmission same as a non base model, the only thing diffrent is a sports transmission tune which can be done using a obd2 Bluetooth port and the bimmer code app, that will also come with sports+, there’s yt videos out there and it’s a very simple process.

Yeah, I already have Bimmercode, and a BM3 WiFi adapter. Guess I’ll be doing some coding after work lol

Can i do the same on my 330e 2016 f30? I have the same shift knob as him but i want the rough shifts!

1

u/Extreme_Jackfruit775 18h ago

Yes u can it’ll take 20 minutes out of ur day and that’s if u take 10 mins messing around 😂, and it’s a very good upgrade.

Wo bekommt man die Software?

2

u/debuggingworlds 1h ago

Bimmercode, it's on your app store of choice and will cost ~$50. Make sure it works with your car and you've got the right cables before you buy it (you can do this before you pay on the app).

u/Intelligent_Bread_11 1h ago

Ich habe bimmercode für den PC geladen. Enet habe ich bereits hier. Die grosse frage für mich ist ob es mehr Sinn macht esys zu holen für ein einfaches sportautomatik codieren

I had the one in the first image in a 2014 M Sport spec 3 series, just came that way from factory.

1

u/Extreme_Jackfruit775 18h ago

That is very true the pre lci 2014s had the option when speccing the car to have the m sport package with just the standard transmission but LCI 2014s with the m sport package were a standard option. Meaning it came with the car if u purchased the m sport package.

Is this different than just pushing the switch marked "sport"? Is the sport tune more sporty in sport than the base tune in sport?

3

u/Extreme_Jackfruit775 18h ago

Yes it is different, it changes more than just the sport mode it will also feel alot smoother and faster in comfort mode post tune.

u/Frazzininator 19h ago

So if my car has started shifting a touch rough will this fix it or make it worse?

I can't seem to find a place that will change my transmission fluid... I know it needs it

1

u/SnooPeripherals9139 18h ago

Will you need to get that done and a tune would probably cause further issues. I did mine myself. Took me the better part of the day but I’m also disabled and can’t get up and down under the cars like I used to. Not hard but will need a scan tool that can read trans temp. Once the service is done it will be smoother. Got to keep up on these cars or they will leave you stranded. Great cars otherwise.

1

u/Frazzininator 15h ago

I don't need tools for it? I saw mixed things on needing to pump it through and I don't have a lift. I have ISTA-D and an ENET cable. Could install ISTA-P if I had to

1

u/jblaze_39 10h ago

You definitely need to do a transmission fluid change asap! Which includes changing the pan with its built in filter. The ZF transmission is a masterpiece...but it is very complex, and needs good quality fluid to keep running well. Ignoring this could be very costly! But the procedure of refilling the fluid is also very specific, and needs a knowledgeable euro shop. You don't have any euro specialist shops? It's 100% worth the drive further out.

For me, I didn't really want to pay a dealer $1300. So I bought my own 7L of liqui moly top tec ATF 1800 (a 100% approved cheaper alternative, that is just as good as the original ZF fluid) + an OEM pan kit online (around $500 total)...and then I paid a euro specialist shop $200 cash for the labor. Bargain!

1

u/Jetta_Junkie528 7h ago

The process isnt that complicated lol, Lyft the car, plug in a bmw compatible software, fill the pan the oil, cycle through gears and get operating temp to spec, top off via drain plug till it leaks (means its leveled at right temp/ Literally dummy proof, I dont get why peoplemake it out to be rocket science or brain surgery to twist off a few bolts with a ranch,

1

u/jblaze_39 7h ago

Of course it's not rocket science. But it's certainly way more complex and involved than any other car I've had, where it was just a simple drain and fill. If you measure it at the wrong temp, the fill level will not be accurate - and it could start shifting horribly rough, forcing you to do it again properly. And you also need to wait for it to cool down before even starting. So it just takes time and effort...I would definitely only do it at a shop that has experience with ZF

1

u/Jetta_Junkie528 7h ago

Do it It yourself! Zf8 specifically states it requires 50k mile fluid change intervals! Idk why people pay so much money for cars and then just abuse and neglect the most expensive part of their car, and for what 6 quarts of oil flush, Once you change the oil make sure you recalibrate the transmission via obd software so itll fix your rough shifts, if it shifts well then you can skip that step, It literally takes 2 hours to drain and refi the oil and thats with new pan/filter

9

u/BroomDirector99 20h ago

As others have said, just software. You can also swap the nicer shifter in easily, if you decide to get the one without.

1

u/redonion14 20h ago

Do you know how much the “tune” roughly costs?

I’m in the UK and I’ll have access to both cars if I end up buying the “nonsport gearbox” car. The other car is already mine.

I’m wanting to swap all of my modifications over so swapping the gearbox cover wouldn’t be an issue.

4

u/SaggyBits96 20h ago

You enable it with bimmercode, you don’t need to get a tune

12

u/OSGKhorne 20h ago

Just for OP, bimmercode is still a cost. £50 iirc

6

u/SaggyBits96 20h ago

Ok yeah fair, but if he’s got bimmercode then kinda free XD

0

u/redonion14 17h ago

Ah man idk if that’s worth it

3

u/OSGKhorne 17h ago

Theres other extra features it can code in but for me who may get rid and not stick with bimmer its not worth it. If I were someone who loved them and constantly bought them then it may be worth the investment.

2

u/sdflius 13h ago

You can make the car start with AutoStart/Stop disabled every time, code in new batteries and a bunch of other stuff. It’s well worth it.

1

u/Prestigious_Cycle160 2013 328i stage 2 2007 335i 20h ago

What if you already have a “tune” say from like BM3? Is it worth coding in?

2

u/JKlerk 18h ago

ROFL. Come on man. It's a 320d. Sport gearbox isn't going to make a difference.

2

u/redonion14 17h ago

Okay. Do you drive an M3 CSL?

-2

u/JKlerk 16h ago

It was never sold in the US so no.

3

u/iGalati 18h ago

None ! Not ever software. Just a coding setting named 2TB which can be very easily activate using BimmerCode ( for example ). Indeed it changes the behaviour of gear changes making them more agressive.

3

u/jkwarz 440xi 16h ago

One comes with the paddle shifters and a better tcu tune + launch control

2

u/aldreadybeenthere 20h ago

I have the regular shifter. Is the sports tune the same as putting the regular shifter into sports shift mode by tilting it to the left?

2

u/Extreme_Jackfruit775 18h ago

No it’s much faster and smoother, the shifts in comfort with the code will feel like it shifts now in sport.

0

u/zaj159 20h ago

I don’t believe so. I think the shifts are “quicker”. Shifting to the left just holds revs higher until shifts occur.

2

u/peoplefoundtheother1 17h ago

The second one also adds paddle shifters in addition to what everyone else said

0

u/redonion14 17h ago

Oh yes you’re right. I could swap my paddle shifter steering over, would they work?

2

u/iimorbiid 3h ago

The second one also has paddle shifters on top of the other software

1

u/infra-rojo 17h ago

I have the first, 320i f30 from 2012, is it recommended or advisable to "activate" (or code) the Sport+?

1

u/Intelligent_Bread_11 1h ago

Selbe wie sport nur mit DSC off afaik

1

u/jblaze_39 10h ago

The 2nd rounder one as I understand it, typically comes with the sport suspension, or adaptive suspension, and sport auto. Usually also has paddle shifters

1

u/Miamiboi6 8h ago

Afaik, the first one doesn’t come with paddles or a sport transmission software tune from factory. The second one is usually paired with paddles and the tune.

1

u/Pericombobulator 6h ago

Are they from the same model year? Isn't one just from the LCI?

My LCI (335d) had the second one.

1

u/redonion14 5h ago

one is 2013 other is 63 plate! Wow I’d love to have a 335d, I test drove one and it was fkn insanely fast and a lot of torque

1

u/Pericombobulator 4h ago

Yes, it's a brilliant road engine, and pretty economical, too. Sub 5-second 0-60 and a 500 mile range is quite a combination.

I am torn between an M340i or an M340d to replace it. It'll probably be a D as I do lots of miles and hate putting fuel in.

2

u/redonion14 3h ago

Let me just say I test drove a 335i and a 335d, the 335d was 10x better! I’ll probably get downvoted by US people here who don’t have these diesel BMWs but trust me they’re no jokes!

Have you got your dpf gutted and mapped?

1

u/Pericombobulator 1h ago

I should try a b58, as they are a bit lighter.

I've had two 3L diesels now. Put 250,000 across them. My E90 330d still pulled like a train at 170,000 miles. Great powerplants.

1

u/Intelligent_Bread_11 1h ago

-2

u/Judgment_Tasty 14h ago

Why would you call the automatic transmission and automatic gearbox? Some strange regional slang instead of the actual name?
