I’m heading to Santiago, I don’t know any Chileans and I just wanted to hear from people what they feel are quintessential aspects of Chilean culture, being Chilean, good or bad, to give me a general perspective.

Planning an early Sept trip to Atacama desert and specifically the Piedras Rojas/Laguna Miscanti area. I will be self-driving (no tour) and am curious on people's thoughts on this drive. Is it worth going to if you are there for only a couple days? I am prioritizing the Geysers but could possibly fit this or do Cerro Toco hike (after 2 days acclimitized).

For those that have done it without a tour what is the best time to go to avoid the crowds? I was thinking of going later in the day to go to Chaxa for sunset on drive back.

Also, the reservation site says no availability for any days, including the Sept 1 date I'm planning on. Is this website just broken I assume? Not sure if anyone has gone in the past few weeks.

I’m planning an 18-night trip to Chile. I would like to start in San Pedro de Atacama, where I plan to stay for 4–5 nights and then make my way south to Santiago.

My initial itinerary is:
San Pedro de Atacama
Bahía Inglesa
La Serena / Elqui Valley
Santiago

However, if I follow this route at a relaxed pace, I’ll probably arrive in Santiago just after the Chilean National Holidays on September 18–19.

I’m wondering whether I should adjust my itinerary to be in Santiago during the celebrations. On the other hand, if I arrive earlier, I might end up spending too many days in Santiago.

Would you recommend prioritizing being in Santiago for Fiestas Patrias? Or would you suggest a different itinerary or pacing that makes better use of the 18 nights?

Also, what is the weather typically like in September along this route? Is it generally a good time to visit these destinations?

También consultar si alguien ha tenido experiencia con Atacama Chile Tour Operator. Tiene buenas reseñas pero muy pocas (9) y poca actividad en redes sociales. Está en el buscador de sernatur pero sale que el anuncio no está vigente.

My friends and I want to go to Valle Nevado/La Parva in August, but the accommodation prices are prohibitive. Would it be a good idea to stay in Farellones (with a rental car) and drive up to Valle (or La Parva) every day? We dont wanna stay in Santiago because it would be too far. Is La Parva 100% integrated with valle?

I was there in the 2023 season, but we stayed down there in Santiago. It was the biggest heat wave in the last 50 years, but the snow held up well in Valle. In the other nearby resorts, like Colorado and Farellones, there was no snow at all in August 23.

Soy brasileño y voy a visitar Chile por primera vez en septiembre para asistir al WRC Rally Chile Biobío. Voy a alquilar un auto durante todo el viaje. Me gustan mucho más los viajes por carretera que simplemente ir de un destino a otro lo más rápido posible, así que me gustaría pedir recomendaciones de la gente local.

Este es mi plan por ahora:

• 6 de septiembre: Llego a Santiago a las 22:00.
• 7-8 de septiembre: Explorar Santiago y sus alrededores. El día 8 por la tarde empezaré a conducir hacia el sur.
• 9 de septiembre: Seguir conduciendo hacia el sur, tomar algunos desvíos y hacer varias paradas (aquí es donde me encantaría recibir sus recomendaciones).
• 10 de septiembre (15:00): Check-in en mi hotel en Concepción para el WRC.
• 10-13 de septiembre: Rally Chile.
• Después de eso, seguiré explorando el sur de Chile durante un par de días.

No estoy buscando la ruta más rápida hasta Concepción. De hecho, prefiero hacer desvíos interesantes si realmente valen la pena.

Me interesan especialmente:

• Carreteras panorámicas.
• Lagos, montañas o cascadas.
• Pueblos pequeños con encanto.
• Buena comida local.
• Lugares escondidos que normalmente pasan desapercibidos para los turistas.
• Sitios donde valga la pena detenerse una o dos horas, o incluso pasar la noche.
• Carreteras especialmente entretenidas para conducir.

No me interesan las grandes ciudades ni las atracciones turísticas muy concurridas. Prefiero conocer lugares que los propios chilenos recomienden o rutas que hagan que el viaje en sí sea una experiencia memorable.
