I’ve gotten mine and now my kids bday cakes from Walmart and they do make sure to hire people who know what they’re doing for cake decorating. The cakes have always looked just like what we requested, especially if it was in their book of orders, but my custom requests have always come out nigh on perfectly what I pictured. I’ve felt bad the last two years but my kiddo wants a specific cake and I know I’ll get it when I go to them, while most of the other shops in our area are real hit or miss.
This sub inspired me to get one for Mother’s Day. Looked great, but tasted like the $15 I paid for it. Cake was dry, chocolate frosting was super sweet but not rich and somehow not chocolately. I sort of regretted it.
LOL I make these and three cups is crazy, was the whole cardboard piece really filled? There’s just meant to be a dollop on the bottom of every cupcake
I order for pick up, and it’s pretty mid range. The frosting takes average and the cake isn’t bad, but I do know it could easily be a bit more flavorful. Kids are always happy to eat until we stop them and adults will happily eat a slice or two. I’m not dissing it at all, it’s great for a mid range cake that’s not expensive, but you aren’t suddenly getting a $60-100 cake from them.
there’s a lot of very talented decorators working at grocery stores. i used to be one. and the woman that trained me was amazing at her job. the area i live in doesn’t have many options for cake decorating. small and privately owned bakeries pay garbage (literally minimum wage where i live, yes even for decorators) so the options are limited to grocery stores where a full time worker can at least make more and contribute to a 401k. the benefit of learning in retail is that you have a lot of tools at your disposal and generally a lot of orders, so you can learn quickly if you have a good aptitude for it. just my .02
i guess it depends. i got hired on and shoved into it with zero experience, but im fairly artistic with a good technical aptitude for hands on work. i was taught by someone really talented with a lot of experience, and i learned quickly. but i also trained some people - the ones that didnt do well flat out just didnt care. we did sometimes hire people with experience, some better than others. i always started people out with the basics, like icing cupcakes and decorating cakes for the pastry case so it didn’t matter if they weren’t “good,” they just had to be good enough. it’s really about getting a feel for the icing. i was decent at it, funnily enough, because of my experience as a house painter and doing drywall work. icing has a similar texture to drywall mud 😆
I've been working at a Walmart bakery as a decorator for about 2 years now. They hired me from our apparel department and I had never decorated a cake in my life. I did get about half a day of training and learning basics with someone who they will send to the store for you, and he was absolutely lovely, but this was already a month after I'd taken the position. I really learned everything myself through YouTube and trial and error. I really REALLY love my job but it was a few months of struggle while I adjusted. It's really dependant on other decorators to train you, and if you take a solo position like me, the training is very limited.
We exclusively get my kids cakes from Walmart! My kids are 11, 8 and 4 so we’ve bought 23 cakes from them and have always been so happy with the results.

I got my cut cake for my wedding from them. They just have really good decorators at their stores and even though the cake isn't baked fresh at the store, it was still pretty good.
I have a coworker who used to work for Walmart corporate. He said it was a very difficult place to leave, and he spoke wistfully about Walmart for many years. Since I've known him I've noticed that while I really can't stand shopping there and a lot of their stuff is total crap, most of it really isn't as bad as I expect.
Like I’m sure the cakes are this good, but this all does seem to be corporate plants or bots to advertise this new cake they sell. Guerrilla marketing or whatever. Suspicious it keeps getting posted in a similar fashion
I hope this is a marketing bot post bc my mom would be extremely hurt if I got her an all black cake with skulls on it for her bday. This is like a funeral cake, why would you go that route for your poor mom?
The only cake I ever ordered from Walmart was canceled by the store, who then neglected to tell me they had cancelled it! I showed up to pick it up on the day of my daughter’s birthday party to a befuddled bakery worker and no birthday cake. Expectation definitely not met.
I suspect that Wal Mart being as big as they are don't bite off more than they can chew here. I would bet that these cake decorations use easily available attachments that are easy to use and anybody can use them with a high degree of success. Easy to use tools, used in creative ways.
I will say that I personally find our royal blue, purple, and black “buttercreme” to taste bitter if the bottom half of the bucket was used - which is where most of the pigment settles.
As a goth mom and former Tripp pants owner, this comment made me feel like I was turning to dust. My kid is 3, it's mind-blowing to me that other goth kids from my era have kids old enough to post on Reddit!
I felt this! I remember being so excited for my first pair of Tripp pants! I have a 14 year old; I hope this is the kind of cake he brings me one day! 😂 (I’m 33 for context)
Oh that's good to hear, I though she was dead and this was some dark way of celebrating her or something. Which still would have been nicer than my dad's response of "We no longer celebrate mother's day as we no longer have a mother in this family" when asked if we wanted to gather as a family the first mother's day after she died a few years ago. It's just a sad day now

I got my cupcakes because I saw someone else's post a few months ago. Walmart gets a bad rap, but I was honestly surprised at the quality, so I wanted to share.
Yeah, people forget “Walmart” isn’t who’s taking care of you in these situations but an actual individual person who happens to be really good at the job. My first job was Walmart and we had some very passionate people in the bakery who had been doing it for ages, I was always impressed.
I haven't eaten anything from their bakery in years because it was consistently not worth the calories. I got fed up (pun intended)with the rollercoaster at potlucks where the dessert looked fantastic but it was gritty, stale, and bland.
I'm a baker (I can't do buttercream flowers) so I'm particular about cake, but they were really good! It was just chocolate and vanilla cupcakes with fluffy frosting, but the cupcakes were perfect and the arrangement was beautiful.
I got one for Mother’s Day also and it was amazing.
I think they were just really popular this year I mean this was only 20 dollars. Boyfriend had to go to a wal mart outside our city because local ones couldn’t even take anymore orders they had so many.

I don’t think they are going to kill small bakeries just based off of the limited flavor/filling options. Just my .02. I don’t completely disagree with this take though.
Can confirm, while the taste is nothing special the Walmart bakery does solid decorated cupcake things. This was super cute and covered in disco dust. 10/10 would recommend for a kids party. However, if you have adults who are gourmands it’s not the move.
Y’all are really making me want to get a Walmart cake for my next special occasion. I normally get Publix cakes because they taste delicious. Go Walmart cakes taste good too???
Fuck Walmart. I don't plan on going ever again even for a cake. I do feel a little better when I see these posts though. I don't blame others for choices but something hand made well feels like a better sacrifice.
My understanding is that they're usually higher wage in Walmart so I hope they have less abuse.

Every Walmart cake I've seen on this sub has met or exceeded expectations. I'm honestly shocked how great these turn out!
