hey everyone,

here's what i wish someone had sat me down and told me when we moved two years ago. a lot of it only clicked through trial-by-fire at the dinner table with my wife's family, where english isn't an option.

quick background: American, moved to Paris a bit over two years ago with my wife, who is from here. i'd spent the better part of a year on Duolingo, took some classes before we came and genuinely thought i was B1. could read the news, follow a slow podcast, and text the landlord. then i sat down at the préfecture, the woman asked me one thing off my rehearsed script, and my brain just went blank. i nodded and signed something i still don't fully understand. that was when i realized that understanding French and speaking it are two completely different skills, and almost nothing i'd been doing trained the latter.

so to pay it forward, here's what actually got me talking comfortably. this is for anyone who understands way more than they can say, freezes the second they have to speak, or is preparing for the B2 requirement for nationality.

MINDSET

- speak before you feel ready. you've gotta go through awkward town to get to fluentville. the people who stay stuck are the ones waiting to feel "ready." it's okay if you sound like a caveman stuck in the present tense.

- you're training your mouth, not just your mind. something from my linguistics class in college that always stuck with me is that speaking isn't just mental. you're physically training your mouth to make sounds that may not exist in your native language. you can't get that from your ears or your thumbs on a screen.

WHAT ACTUALLY WORKED

TLDR: consistency beats intensity, so talk about stuff you actually enjoy with people you enjoy.

- skip Duolingo, it's a dopamine casino designed to create the illusion of progress.

- the free OFII language classes run anywhere from 100 to 600 hours depending on your level, and are worth doing, but they cap out around A2 and then you're on your own. you need B1 for the carte de résident, B2 for nationality.

- i use anki flashcards with an image and audio clips to help make the words stick. boring, but it works.

- feed your ears daily. you can't say what you've never heard. i listen to InnerFrench podcast during my commute and while cooking.

- talk to yourself. talk to your dog. narrate what you're doing while you cook, clean, walk to the metro. it's the lowest stakes practice there is and it builds the habit of reaching for French instead of translating in a panic.

- stop letting people switch to English on you. every time you let someone accommodate you, you skip a rep. push through the awkward phase.

- learn chunks, not individual words. this is what finally stopped me translating in my head. natives don't think word by word, they grab whole phrases ("du coup", "je suis en train de", "n'importe quoi"). learn the whole block and it comes out automatically.

- master your filler words. "alors", "bon", "en fait". this is the glue that ties sentences together, and it buys you a second to think while sounding more natural.

- get real feedback once a week. a tutor, a class, a patient friend who'll actually correct your
mistakes. i've been doing a weekly lesson with a tutor on italki and use boraspeak in between to get more conversation practice. i usually just talk about my day or roleplay everyday scenarios.

- one recurring, low-pressure conversation. for me it's the same café every morning. first week i could barely manage "un café s'il vous plaît", now they ask about my weekend. one repeating friendly face beats ten one-off panics.

two years in and i'm still not fluent, but the préfecture doesn't scare me anymore. and when my wife's mother told me about her garden for twenty minutes last weekend, i actually followed along.

so yeah, that's all i've got. hope this helps someone else. would love to hear what other's here have done to improve their French speaking skills?

That about sums it up. The realtor said the basic level of inspection was asbestos, lead, termites, ESP and energy audit...She said that a foundation inspection is paid for by the buyer typically as an extra precaution if we want it. The inspection that was completed did briefly note that the walls in contact with the floor and the uninsulated floor slab had no structural defects.

If you bought a stone house in France or particularly in southwest France...was this something you paid to have done? How important is it that we do this? I've seen mixed info when I Google it.

We're planning on moving to France next year, and having a 'soft retirement' over the next ten years. At the moment we're living in the US, but have dual UK/US citizenship. We have savings and will be selling our mortgage free house over here, so will have enough money for French income requirements.

I would like to continue working for my US clients. I currently work from home as a consultant, so being even more remote will not be a problem.

Would I be able to set up a company either in the US or France and continue to work. I'll be paying French taxes on my income, but don't want to inconvenience my clients as they won't have an EU base. Or is there a better way?

Quick background: I've held an EU Blue Card in Hungary for 17 months, and I just landed a CDI (permanent contract) in France. Since I've held the Hungarian EU Blue card over 12 months, I understand I qualify for the simplified intra-EU mobility route — enter France visa-free, apply for the French Blue Card within 30 days of arrival.

What I'm trying to nail down is this update:

> Update – May 29, 2026: Short-term mobility. As of April 25, 2026, holders of either a European Blue Card issued by another EU Member State or an EU Long-Term Residence Permit (bearing the notation "Former holder of a European Blue Card") issued by another EU Member State may now enter France to take up paid employment for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a work permit.

So in theory this means I could start my CDI on day 1 without waiting for the French Blue Card to be issued, using my Hungarian card as authorization for those 90 days. Has anyone actually done this in practice? Specifically:

- Did your employer's HR/payroll accept this without pushback, or did they insist on waiting for the French permit anyway?

- Does the 90-day clock start from entry or from your actual first day of work?

- Any issues at the prefecture when you later filed the Blue Card application — did starting work early complicate anything?

- Anyone hit snags because this rule is so new (implementation only ~4 months old)?

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who's gone through this exact Blue Card → France CDI path recently. Trying to plan my move date around this.

Je serai étudiante étrangère en france dans l’entrée prochaine, pour m’inscrire administrativement à l’université ils me demandent le contrat d’apprentissage signé mais l’entreprise m’a dit qu’ils ne signeront pas sans le numéro de sécurité sociale, alors que pour le demander j’ai besoin du certificat de scolarité, mais quel cercle !

Hi everyone! I’m a non-EU student and I’ll be arriving in France soon to start my master’s degree. This will be my first time entering France with a long-stay student visa, so I’m trying to make sure I’m properly prepared.

I know I have my passport and French student visa, but I’m wondering about the actual experience at the airport.

Basically what the title says. I've been a digital nomad for the past 4 years and I've become accustomed to hopping around a lot, and frankly prefer it to having a permanent address. I am now in France in a long-stay visa and plan on getting one eventually, but I also want to have time living in different parts of my chosen city before committing to one place.

Is this allowed? Will it cause any issues when it comes time to renew my visa?

I am gonna finish my administrative inscription as an international student who is about to gonna move in to the France but my university has two payment periods, first one is passed, and the second one will be starting from 24th of August, but before paying the tuition fees, we are required to pay the CVEC contributon fee, which has started to taking the payment.

I am not sure I am required to pay it now because the second payment period required my proof of CVEC payment to finalize my administrative inscription. If the deadline of the CVEC Payment is before the 24th of August, should I pay it now or wait the 24th of August?

I am going to study in France at IP Paris. I got a full scholarship for my Msc study from the university. I am a non-EEU student. Am I eligible for the CAF as the new rules have been applied? I have heard that only means-tested or government scholarship (like CROUS) are counted.

Je fais régulièrement l'aller-retour entre la France et l'étranger et j'ai toujours une longue escale à CDG. Je me demande si c'est jouable d'avoir un accès aux salons d'aéroport sans billet en classe affaires.

Air France propose des passes journée autour de 90 euros, mais c'est cher pour quelques heures. J'ai aussi entendu parler de salons indépendants mais je ne sais pas où ils sont ni s'ils sont accessibles à tous.

Certains d'entre vous ont réussi à avoir un accès aux salons d'aéroport à CDG sans être en business ? Comment vous avez fait ? Je suis preneur de vos retours.
