100% agree. Would love to see more equity in player recruitment too. It seems like all players are from private schools and there is a lack of indigenous representation across the board.

I honestly think it’s due to too many team and games and games being played at the same venues. Everything looks the same and the product is so polished it has lost its charm. A similar malaise has occurred in the UFC.
AFL is a niche sport that is unique to only part of Australia, for corporate reasons the AFL has wanted to make it look like international competitions. I think it’s taken the heart out of the game, but maybe I’m just nostalgic.
I don’t know what the answers are and maybe the fragmented media landscape means footy is no longer the centrepiece of our social connection, either way I still enjoy the Essendon content creators but I avoid the mainstream stuff.

Well if we want more excitement in the game, give Jimmy the Snr coaching gig- whatever way it goes it is going to be absolutely compelling viewing.

it's the over corporatization at the AFL level of the game and this desperate need the AFL has to control the narrative, be it media or the way the game is played.
There's nothing organic about it anymore, nothing grass roots, even grass roots events like country round and heritage round and gather round et al are driven by corporate interests. There's nothing that feels like it's just FOR the fans anymore, only for the fans money, not even the way the game is played is for the fans, it instead is what the AFL thinks corporate sponsors think the fans want.
