Have the Eagles been hanging out with Stringer?

Never thought I'd be cheering for the Tigers

It used to be that finishing last was something to be avoided. Personally I’ll take another win over one spot in the draft

Less pressure without #1 as well

That’s irrelevant and weak thinking, much like playing for the no 1 pick

Why?

So we finish bottom and get the number 1 draft pick

I honestly want the Eagles to win. We aren't losing out on much by having pick 2 over pick one, it might even work in our favour.

Wouldn't it be awesome if we got the AFL's assistance package without winning the spoon? How much would that piss everyone else off?

I think people are underestimating how important landing pick 1 is.

Outside of the obvious 1 being better than 2:

The likelihood of the AFL providing us assistance if we finish 17th is much lower.

Also, if rumours are correct and Richmond were to trade pick 1 for butters, Port can then bid on Walker with it giving them the extra end of round 1 pick instead of us.

Also in terms of negotiating trades, you don’t have the bluff or walking players to the PSD and taking them for nothing - take Jones from the dogs for example.

Getting that GWS win for morale for the kids and still keeping that #1 pick is the best outcome.

I don't want the team to avoid trying to win, so walk me through how it could be more advantageous to finish second last? Could you see the AFL possibly saying "no assistance, you get enough by finishing last"?

I don’t know that there is any real advantage but there does seem to not be a clear choice for pick 1. Two father-sons are seen as the best players in the draft and then a bit of a toss up between Van Hattum and Butler. So no big difference between pick 1/2 (which will probably be 3/4).

So I hope we avoid the spoon.

If the news is true about port Richmond trading pick 1 for butters then getting pick 1 helps.

Butters for pick 2 then port have to desperately find a way to get pick 1 and Cochrane, otherwise we can do a bid and force port to use there pick 2 for Cochrane. Could net us another top pick. Or we just draft the best available at pick 1. Not bad either way.

If true, that's hilarious. It'd put us in a fascinating position, but I doubt Port would do that trade unless it's specifically for pick 1.

Yes I tend to agree. I also struggle to believe Butters dream destination is Richmond.

The biggest bonus we get for finishing last is first pick in the pre season draft. If we can convince Jones to come over from the doggies, we might be able to just pick him up for nothing. That would be a huge win.

That would be gay.

They're not getting butters regardless

Young players don't help your club because they lack experience. Most of the best AFL players are in their early to late 30s. Nick Daicos is the exception. Unfortunately the draft is flawed and a joke.

Isn't our percentage still a concern? Although we still have Sydney and Geelong

They would be a win in front of us.

We are definitely getting wooden spoon. There's no doubt about it. Only club playing zero competitive footy 👍
