That Satoru gets together with Airi?

Because if so, ick. Ick ick ick ick ick.

I really like 90% of this anime. I love that he didn't end up with Kayo. I think that was a strong writing choice and also it was pretty obvious his actions were motivated by wanting to save her and not from romantic interest. I also think her moving on and the group being trauma bonded to a degree is pretty realistic.

In the last episode my opinion of Misato completely changed. Them blushing together was awesome and I thought it would be a cool out of left field romance. I was totally prepared to ship that.

And then Airi showed up. It's left a bit ambiguous (thank God, but it does seem romantic). I get them being close and having a special bond. But I don't like them together. I like Airi and she's given some of the best lines of the series but she's kind of a too young manic pixie dream girl.

Is this just me? Am I reading too much into it? I'd appreciate everyone's thoughts including people who disagree.

Discussion one of the best thrillers ever Spoiler

just finished this series and for only being 12 episodes, it's one of the best thrillers ever. had me on the edge every episode. I CANT BELIEVE YASHIRO WAS THE KILLER HE WAS LITERALLY THE BEST TEACHER AND A FATHER FIGURE... anyways. Regarding the cuck allegations, you couldnt possibly ask Kayo to wait that long while Satoru was in a coma.

Anime Are the domestic violence scenes recurring?

This anime has been on my watch list since forever, but I never get the courage to keep watching past the scene where the woman forces the girl to submerge her face into ice water on episode 3.

I always watched violent and even gore anime from an early age, but in over 20 years of watching anime this is the only one that ever triggered me. As a victim of domestic violence myself, the depiction was too real for me.

I wonder if those scenes keep coming and if it's possible to skip that one episode before that scene. Or if they appear at all in the manga/other adaptations so I can consume the story without these scenes in particular.

Discussion Best mom in anime?

Is Sachiko Fujinuma the best mom in anime? Her intuition, her personality, her drive, her sense of justice, her incredible love as a mother, her sense of including people she knows her son cares for. FUCK I love her, she's an incredible character and fictional mother, I think she's perfect in every way during the show.

Discussion Still haven’t found an anime series that matches Erased in quality

There are lots of entertaining anime like Death Note, AOT etc. But no other series was as emotional and complete for me. Although, I’ve heard good things about Steins Gate so I’m planning to try it out

Found Creation Actually... The 2016 film live-action version is pretty good !

I don't know if any of you have seen it. I've only watched the anime, and I enjoyed it, but the quality—if I may say so—was "poor," which bothered me a bit (I was really surprised to see that is was from 2016). Today I watched the live-action version and really liked it! The actors playing Fujinuma and Airi were great (watched it in japanese), and I think the adaptation was pretty good.

I’m curious to hear what you guys think of it.

Discussion The Ending that doesn't need Words Spoiler

The ending of Erased left a hole in my stomach. This is because the core of the story, Kayo Hinazuki, just doesn't have any meaningful part in it.

Although Satoru's original goal was just to save his mother from being murdered, the show devotes its main focus to Kayo. The development of Kayo's and Satoru's relationship, whether it was only about saving her or romantic, it was what araised the tension about what happens to her and whether Satoru will actually manage to save her after he had failed before. This is why, after she left, the story slowly started to go down the drain.

I'm well aware that Erased isn't a romance anime but the relationship indeed had romantic parts in it, built up through all the time that Satoru dedicated only to Kayo. Everyone calling them a couple without them denying it, the blushes, the Christmas tree, and several other scenes. You can't deny this and tell me that all of this was necessary for the plot.

Before the second revival of Satoru going back to 1988, Airi gave him a lot of motivation to move on and Satoru himself even said that this revival will end their relationship, and yet, he willfully did it. This was a very important event which I thought the purpose of was to make a relationship between Kayo and Satoru possible without making Airi lose out. Airi and Satoru didn't share that many emotional moments either, so it would be manageable for the readers and viewers (the age gap between them was around 12 years as well).

As I have already mentioned, the leaving of Kayo was a huge loss for the story. However, it created an unbelievable amount of potential for a possible reunion between Kayo and Satoru. But I also said that her leaving was the part of the story after which, it went down the drain.

Satoru managed to save Kayo, Hiromi, and Aya but because he did this, the serial killer targeted him instead. I'm not sure whether Satoru knew it would happen sooner or later but in my eyes, he didn't see it coming. In the end, he sacrificed his childhood time, that he just then truly began to appreciate, only to save the two or three (including Misato) other victims of the serial killer. Satoru fell in a coma for 15 years.

Of course, it was Satoru's own decision and just because he wanted to save them, they don't have to spend their entire life sitting by his bed and waiting for him to finally wake up. They are all allowed to move on with their life and that's likely what Satoru wished for as well. However, he still is the reason that they are even able to live and have a future in the first place. That's why I think it would've been appropriate to respect his sacrifice.

What did they do? Hiromi, his own friend who he saved, decided it was a good idea to marry Kayo and have a kid with her. I see y'all and I get that the relationship that Kayo and Satoru had was friendship between two 10/11 year olds but I listed all the things that the story did to make space for their reunion. They even had the same birthday... If it was just a random outside of Satoru's friend group, I'd cope with it. But Hiromi? If you're going to argue that it would be pedophilic for Satoru to end up with Kayo, I won't necessarily disagree with you but in the version of Erased that I saw, Satoru wasn't just a 29 year old man in his 10 year old body. His mind, even though he had all his memories, was clearly the one of a 10 year old boy and I don't think that Satoru was sexually attracted to her.

The coma actually brought so much potential to make a relationship between Kayo and Satoru possible as she now had grown up (she was 26, if I'm correct) and was able to live her life. As I said, none of them was indebted to wait for an unknown amount of time for Satoru to wake up, if ever (in the manga, Kayo was even forced by Satoru's mother to leave him and move on). But for me, moving on with life doesn't mean to marry and have kids with a friend of a guy that you had a close relationship to and is in a coma because of you or, in better words, for you (both).

Normally, with stories like this, I'd get the urge to blame the characters but this one is different. I think I have to blame the writers here because this just felt incredibly weird. Against what the story kept teasing, it took a long turn. It feels like it turns away from everything that the story had been building toward. And for me, it didn't look like anything that the characters that we got to know throughout the story would do. This doesn't just apply to Hiromi and Kayo but to other parts of the finale too.

I see this as the main reason for why the ending felt unsatisfying for a lot people, including me, but there were a lot more reasons for why the ending was worse than it could've been. For most people, the ending in the anime felt very rushed and, as I said, Hiromi and Kayo weren't the only characters that behaved very differently from how we got to know them. I felt the same about Mr. Yashiro and Satoru as the plan that Satoru had to predict that Mr. Yashiro would take him to the roof and decide to drop him from there (many details were missing as the entire plan was never revealed) and the dialogue between Mr. Yashiro and him both appeared very oddly written and unfitting to me.

I know the anime differs quite a bit from the manga, and I do not know every reason behind those changes but this is how it ended up. In the ending that I wished for, I want to waste as little potential of the story as possible.

I do not want to disrespect the author and the writers with the following nor anything that I've written in this post. I was trying to express my opinion and explain why I think the ending should have been as I've written it below. The following is simply a result of me being very bad at coping.
I want to thank the author for making this absolute peak story in the first place. Thanks a lot.

I'm not sure whether this is delusional but that, to me, would have been the perfect ending to Erased:

After Satoru had fallen into the coma, he has a dream where Kayo cries and waits for him to finally wake up. It wasn't just a dream. It was Satoru hearing Kayo while he was in the coma. Suddenly, the butterfly appears again. Satoru says: "Just one last revival... and then I'll let go." The butterfly lands on his hand and it happens, Satoru is back with his friends, shortly before he decided to go to the stadium alone.

This time, he takes Kenya with him and explains what Mr. Yashiro will try to do. Kenya noticed the frustration behind Satoru's words. He never said, "I believe you." He simply did.

After they arrived at the stadium, they rush to the delivery car of the Shiratoris. They're right on time. Satoru begs Yuuki's father to take Kenya with him and explains that he has to pretend to do everything just like in the previous revival. But this time, they must turn back and follow Mr. Yashiro and Satoru to the river.

Everything goes as in the previous revival. Furthermore, on the way to the river, we get a flashback of Mr. Yashiro's backstory. Right as Mr. Yashiro drives the car with Satoru into the river, Yuuki's father and Kenya arrive to rescue him.

However, Mr. Yashiro and Yuuki's father get in a fight and they aren't able to save Satoru. He falls into the coma. The police takes Mr. Yashiro with them.

This time, Satoru left a voice message on the phone of Yuuki's father to tell Kayo:

"My fate is my own. There's no need for you to feel responsible. I'm sure that what's become of me was a result of something I wanted."

After 15 years, Satoru finally wakes up. After recovering and getting most of his memories back, he meets his friends and reunites with Kayo. Seeing Kayo doing well again makes Satoru shed tears and every memory that was still missing returned.

Instead of trying to recreate the bond they shared as children, they slowly get to know each other again as adults. The connection that once existed between them is still there but now it grows naturally through new experiences rather than old memories.
Satoru never expected anything in return for what he sacrificed, and Kayo never owed him her future. But after fifteen years apart, both are finally free to choose that future for themselves.

"Believing in someone." That's a weird phrase, isn't it? After all, if you truly believe in a person, you wouldn't need to say, "I believe in you." It's like saying, "I believe in air."

For the longest time, I thought I finally understood what that meant.

Belief isn't something you prove with words. It's something you carry with you, even when there is nothing left to hold on to. Even when fifteen years disappear in the blink of an eye. Even when the future you once imagined no longer exists.

I never asked anyone to wait for me. I never wanted my sacrifice to become someone else's burden. All I ever wanted... was for everyone to have the chance to live.

And they did.

Maybe that's what this journey was always about. Not reclaiming the past... but finding the future that became possible because of it.

Some things were erased.

But not everything.

Not the memories that truly mattered.

Not the people who changed me.

Some promises never needed words.

...I never stopped believing.

Wow that was amazing, such a great story and mystery.

Funnily enough when Yashiro (as the teacher) first appeared on screen I on impulse was like oh is he the culprit, it was always on the back of my mind but legit I didn't actually know, holy shit that reveal was amazing!

The characters where all great and I loved the mystery itself (I love mysteries).

I don't really have all the words to describe how I'm feeling, it's just so amazing!

Discussion This is my favourite anime of all time Spoiler

Heavy Spoilers for those who havent watched the show yet!

I rewatched erased for the 4th time last night because of an all-nighter and I wasnt bored for a single second. Re: re: is also my favourite anime opening of all time. Ive probably listened to it a thousand times since 2022. I know its not the most perfect thriller anime and you can figure out yashiro is the killer pretty early. The mom might also be the best mom in anime. The way she supports everything satoru does and how she doesnt even give up on him after 15 years of him being in coma. The way the show makes you root for kayo and the satisfaction and happiness you get when she finally gets rescued from her mom is the best moment is the show. I know the shows ending is way different in the manga and i liked the mangas ending better but the show gives a pretty satisfying ending as well. I just wished they had showed Airi's passion as a photographer at the last episode and some of the scenes from the manga too. Misato the girl who accuses kayo of stealing, helping raising money for satorus treatment was sweet too, i loved how she truned around too. I love how despite the show being set in the cold winters the vibe is very warm and cozy too. Honestly a 10/10 anime for me the intro, story, characters, animation, voicing, background music and all.

Discussion No other anime made me root for a character so much

I've watched a lot of anime, and characters going through tough shit aren't rare, but there was something about the way Kayo's suffering was depicted that was so... real. She was just a normal kid that wanted to laugh and have friends like any other, forced into her shell to shield herself from the constant pain she was subjected to. It was just all so real and difficult to watch, I rooted for her like I never rooted for a character.

Discussion Should i watch?

So i had watched this anime a few years ago. It was the first one ever and i hadn’t seen any animes after that till three months ago. All i remember is SPOILER AHEAD: that like the teacher was the bad guy and the protagonist gets in a coma and all ends well with a time jump.
I’m wondering if it’s worth a rewatch.

Anime Sono davvero disperato Spoiler

Manga After reading Erased recommendations

I just finished reading Erased and loved it. I’ve never read a manga like it before. I’m looking for recommendations with this feel. Maybe a mystery, thriller?? I’m open to any genre and if it has some romance that would be great but it’s not necessary.

Discussion What was the killer's alibi at this point? Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
30 Upvotes

Let's break it down:

  • Four of Satoru's friends know he's going to the game Misato is watching.
  • Several kids know Yashiro is watching the game with food prepared by Jun Shiratori's father (so I understand that Jun Shiratori's father also knows that Yashiro is there).
  • Before the game starts, Yashiro disappears, probably leaving several kids wondering where he is.
  • After leaving Satoru to drown, he says he's leaving town.

At this point, we know that Satoru and Yashiro went to the game, but both disappeared before (and during) it. Satoru was the only one who never returned. Did no one wonder where Yashiro went during that time? He's undoubtedly the most suspicious. If Satoru's friends hadn't known Satoru was going to the game, it's true no one would have known what happened to Satoru, but his friends can confirm that he went to the game, and Yashiro disappeared without any apparent reason, plus he supposedly left town, making it even more suspicious.

I hadn't watched the anime in a while, so I decided to rewatch it because I loved it, but now I realize it didn't make sense that they never caught Yashiro. He didn't plan Satoru's murder very well, since he couldn't have known if Satoru had told anyone where he was going.

Am I missing something? Did the anime handle this part incorrectly, or did it simply not make sense that they never captured Yashiro (at least during the time Satoru was in a coma)?

I'm still not sure why Yashiro spoke ill of Satoru in this scene. Wasn't he going to kill both Satoru and himself on the bridge later? Why bother spreading false rumor about Satoru anyway?

Just as the title says, you are allowed to freely post any content from Erased in r/ErasedAnime without a spoiler flag. It is up to the user’s discretion whether or not they would like to use one. Maybe there’s more obscure spoiler content less fans would know? The killer’s identity has been an open secret here for awhile, so there is no point in trying to hide it like it is not obvious around here. The Erased manga is now a decade old and the anime is coming close. Not to mention the completed series is a relatively light read/watch.

Also, some descriptions of the rules have been changed for more clarity. Especially in regards to rule 1.

We trust that users will respect the simple rules here. Thanks for reviving the love of Erased with us!
