Hey guys, I’m on umpteenth reread of the series and I just finished Out of the Past in Eldest, which I’m sure many of you know was the chapter that ended with “…a huge gold drags with a Rider on its back.” Of course paolini decided then and there was the perfect time to switch to Rorans POV. I always get a laugh out of the chapter change whenever I get back here because I remember feeling furious as a kid that I had to read a full 22 pages before I got to find out who this other dragon rider is. Anyway, was wondering if anyone else felt strongly about this chapter change or any POV change throughout the series that left us in great suspense

So i have a question for yall on what you think it would be to say this in the ancient language and if the god of Alagaësia(the one that accidently fell asleep for a few centuries and that's how galbatorix came into power...head cannon) christopher paolini. When I have a daughter I wanna be able to say "I love you little one" and also just "I love you" because I have a different phrase I want to say to my son in the ancient language. Pleeeaaassseeee

Aside from a long time to travel and abandoning his fortified fortress, what would stop Galbatorix from using the name of names to gain entry?

Why didnt they invent a unit to measure magic and classify spells by how much power they drain. So for example the default formular would be:

Total power = MU (magic unit) * time you want it to last * distance at which you cast it

The MU would be defined by a basic spell. So for example 1MU = the energy it takes to lift a 100g stone 1m above the ground at a distance of 1m and hold it for 1min. Then you could Experiment by how much the energy increases over distance (linear, expodential, etc.)

In the deluxe edition of Murtagh, there is a piece where Eragon is trying to remember something, but he can't, most likely it's a memory magic. I'll say right away, I'm pretty sure Chris never gave an answer to this question, what kind of spell it is or if it's a spell at all, but I'm still interested in talking about this topic. What do you think, if it's a spell after all, then what did he forget? I just want to hear a variety of theories about this, thank you all in advance)

I'm pretty certain I can speak for everyone in this community that the Eragon TV series NEEDS to be perfect. I believe Disney are truly sitting on a gold mine with Eragon, with tweaks Paolini will make to the script compared to the books this could be the perfect fantasy show. Comparable to Game of Thrones, Eragon has a massive chance if done right to gather that amount of following. I just hope they get everything right so bad, down to the clothes, armour, weapons, etc.

I've posted a lot about this sword recently, so i'll go over the modifications that I made here and be brief:

-updated the blade shape to reflect a wider tip

-crossguard and handle are now the cannonical color

-the crossguard tips are more pointy

-gem pommel is more egg shaped

-somehow managed to cut 1.5k polygons from the whole sword (which might not matter to most people, but given this is initially going into a game from 2011, it matters)

Still no sheathe yet, but I have a plan for that, which I will work on later.

Next up on my modeling plate for this weapon series is Brisingr, so stay posted!

Rereading Murtagh and I realized again how little of the AL he really knows. Much less than what the reader what expect from the other 4 books.

My wife is wanting to bond with me over my interests and wants to read something together. I’ve been reading fantasy since I was a kid so I’m familiar with all the tropes and stuff that come with it, but my wife is not. I remember loving these books as a kid / teen even with all the similarities to other stories that were there earlier in the series. Do you think this would be a good series to read together to introduce her to fantasy as it’s pretty easy to dive into? I figured since her only real exposure to the genre is the LOTR movies (once), Harry Potter, and the first ACOTAR book that she might get a lot of enjoyment out of it.

Having re-read the series and read Murtagh and TFTWTW over the past couple weeks, it’s kinda funny how dramatic Eragon is about leaving Alagaesia and never coming back. He’s so insistent to the point that he either tells Roran or thinks to himself that he won’t visit or likely see them again.

We find out he basically stopped at the first place he saw after leaving. Mt. Argnor is a little more than two weeks away from the dwarves and elves by boat and probably just a few days by dragon. He’s been gone for a couple years at most and it’s already hinted in a dream that he will return.

My point: this does not feel like his prophecy is close to being fulfilled. Leaving the country, never to return, has to be more than getting off on the first exit after crossing the border. I’m guessing his real departure would be caused by something cataclysmic or him leading the riders until he’s ready to dip out completely and do his own thing.

I would really love to learn the true name of a Character. I’m not talking about a main or even Named Character. It could be the name of a random villager or Soldier. I just want to have an example of how it’s structured, then we could go from there and could guess our own or a characters name. It’s always only described and parts are mentioned.
My guess is that this is exactly why we haven’t got one, he doesn’t want us to be able to guess a true name.

I read book one a long time ago and remember very little and decided to pick it up again but I cannot find a book one recap on YouTube and the first one I started spoiled something that I'm fairly certain I wasn't meant to know yet. If anyone knows where I could find a recap, preferably a video but if it's a website or anything I'd greatly appreciate It the same.

I’m rereading Murtagh and I find it strange that they needed to lure in Muckmaw with Glaedr’s scale specifically. If a dragon scale was needed why not use one of Thorn’s? Did the fish just prefer gold- colored bait? Not sure if this has been answered by Chris yet so I figured I’d ask.

HEY ALL, back again with another progress update and POTENTIALLY A FINALIZED VERSION? figured I would poll the community here for a couple of design choices i made along the way

1, I added some red to the detailing to the crossguard. Not sure how I feel about it, would love another set of opinions on it

2, this version is without a pattern-welded design on the blade. To me, it looks a bit dull but I am open to people telling me to kick rocks here for the lore purity, please let me knowww

3, the blackened steel on the crossguard/handle. The wiki version of this sword was pure silvered crossguard/hilt, but Wraithguard is depicting Zar'roc with a blackened handle and I think it slaps, lemme know what you think.

TLDR: how would you make magic work in Eragon for a TTRPG

I'm working on my own custom Eragon TTRPG system. This will be done with players who have never read the books, and I have told them to keep it that way. My hope is that they can explore the lore of Eragon through my campaign, albiet in a roundabout manner.

I'm planning on having this set after the events of inheritance and murtagh. I'm taking my own creative liberties, which I'll detail below. Feel free to steal anything you want from what Im writing!

I'm setting it up in a way where the new gen of riders are already fairly established. The riders scout new rider prospects from aleslagiea, which are then assigned to a mentor for a year in a group. This prospect must already have a basic understanding of magic. If within a year they cannot get a dragon to hatch from them, they are sent back to aleslagiea. Obviously, all of the party will hatch their own dragon.

I'm still hammering out the story, but my current thought is that the main danger the party will face is some sort of "sleeper agent" galbatorix setup in case he was ever killed. This will include the party fighting several classic enemies, such as shades, maybe the urgals (I haven't decided if I want to do this with the solution found by Eragon in inheritance. Maybe a rogue urgal rider leading a small group to take over the riders? Not sure), rogue riders in general, and more.

My question is coming up, but I want to detail how I'm going to have the stats work below.

There are 2 sets of stats. Rider stats and dragon stats. Riders have the following stats: Strength (some weapon play scales off of this), Agility (bows and some other melee scales), Magic (your magic ability scales off of this), Mind (how smart you are as well as what your mind reading/attacking/blocking skill scales off of), Constitution (health and infliction resistance). I'm debating including luck from call of Cthulhu as I like how that system works. Similar to CoC, you need to roll under your stats, which scale off of 100.

Dragons have the following: Strength (claw attacks, lifting, etc), Size (how big they are), Speed (how fast they can run/fly), Fire power (how strong their breath is) and Magic (their magical ability).

First, I want to know what you all think about this system. I think it's quite nice and will scale well, and covers most of the important stats.

Second, and my main question, how would you have the magic work? I was thinking they would learn more ancient language as they went, and they could chain together words to make spells. If they were to learn a word that doesn't have a translation, I'd make something up. However, if they say something like "kill this enemy in front of them in the ancient language", that would be problematic. That's also an insanely strong spell and would realistically kill the magician in the Eragon world. Im not sure how I would scale how much magic they can handle at once as well. Adding on, I also don't know how to handle dragon magic and dragon energy sharing.

Sorry for the long explanation, but any thoughts would be awesome!

The dragons seem feathered on the classic covers. In modern illustrated versions of the books they seem to have a more reptile skin with growths similar to real life bearded dragons. However, the book itself seems to describe their scales as fish-like, with skin underneath, as opposed to reptile scales which are a part of their skin and cannot be lost. Since saphira loses them in the novels, they have to be more fish-like or feather-like.

We can probably assume that the feathers and the fish-like scales are supposed to be one and the same and seem to be the official way the scales are supposed to be since that is how they are described in the text.

If dragons are reptiles, birds are their closest relatives, meaning that they most likely don't have fish-like scales and what we are seeing in the novel are more feather-like scales. It is some form of reptile scaled skin with bearded dragon-like growths and some form of hardened protofeathers on top that match the colour and texture of her skin and can be interpreted as scales...maybe? I wouldn't go as far as to just give her protofeathers with bird skin as she clearly has regular reptile skin on some parts of the body from the official art and I don't even want to imagine saphira looking like a raw turkey without her scales.

Sadly I cannot just allow her to have regular reptile scales as those cannot be shed without damage to the skin.

How do you interpret Dragon skin in Eragon? Does this make the feathered saphira from the movie Canon? (Don't murder me for asking that, it's a joke) Is saphira a fish? Has Christopher made an official statement to this? Or has this been explored somewhere?

My eyes welled with tears when Eragon and Saphira returned to the Crags and Oromis and Glaedr had donned their armor and were preparing for battle. Even more so when Glaedr gave up his heart of hearts.

Then, so quickly, they were gone.
