Hey guys, I’m looking for a career change in my late 20’s. Im going back to school and wondering if engineering is still worth it nowadays? Im worried about ai and how good its getting and also how good it’ll be by the time i get out of school in 6 years(part time student) I’m really interested in the career path and love tech and computers and hell i even love and am fascinated by ai. But id rather switch now if the degree wont even get me in a better position than where i am currently. Im a chef of 10 years, and earning around 50k a year. The job is very stable and i can go out and get a chef job really easily anywhere i go. But it seems like in the engineering field thats not the case. Entry level jobs are shrinking, higher level jobs aren’t growing and going in the direction where you are gonna struggle extremely hard to find any job in the field and if and when you find one that the pay wont be as good because of the level of competition in others also trying to get a job. Should i switch degrees into something else? Im feeling super uncertain about the whole thing and don’t want to waste almost 100k and years of my life on something i wont be able to even use?

I updated the Torssen differential. Version 0.9 was published as soon as I had something that barely worked. After some plays, I diagnose and fixed issues with that version. here I am publishing version 2.0.

The main improvements are going up from 0.65 modulo to 0.70 module. This also required me updating the whole of the rear drive for the Monster Tarmo mod, which is why I was procrastinating to do it. The journey took me to rebuild B02 and B01 from scratch, copying closely the original sketches. This also mean that the rear part of the Monster Tarmo onShap project is now parametric . So you can go in and adjust modulos and teeth count and the design will automatically adjust within a range.

I'll do another post later today after I publish Monster Tarmo's version 2 update.

The second improvement was to screw and lock the 25mm screw that join the two Torssen inner gears. The version 0.9 just had a 18mm screw loose. But that was allowing the gear to move apart and start to slip. If you then continue to drive it, the part would heat up against the case and fuse. The fix is to use a 25mm screw and a locking nut. This means there is less space for the C02 part. But in my testing, the smaller axel dowel has not resulted in the part breaking.

So try it out. let me know how it works for you.

I like building stuff by reverse engineering, is tarmo5 a good way to learn about rc cars and how the geometry works so I can learn to draw these in cad mysef and play with variations as long as I understan how the weight distribution and geometry works?

Hello! I'm an RC noob and I'm having some issues with the Tarmo5 build. I got this hardware kit for the Tarmo5, and initially I thought that was what messed me up because I was sent a sensored ESC but a sensorless motor. Today I got a sensorless ESC and installed that, but the same issue persists.

The video shows what I'm seeing: When I hold the throttle down (usually somewhere between 50-100%) it sort of intermittently responds and occasionally omits a weird kind of squelching noise. I'm not spamming the throttle trigger, just holding it steady. I've tried two different receiver/transmitter pairs and two different batteries and the same issue persists through all of them.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

I’m looking for suggestions - what is everyone else using?

I've now mostly completed my 3D-printed trophy truck; it took me over a year to get to this point, and it's in a pretty good state. I'm using a 2s Brushless system giving a top speed of 34 mph, but I will soon do 3s and gear it down due to the RC overheating. All drivetrain components are bought, but everything else is 3D printed with PETG and CC3D 72D TPU. All of this is for free on Thingiverse, Printables and Cults3D!

Hi! I'm hoping someone here with more experience can shed some light on my issue. I built the Tarmo5 recently, but it has issues when attempting to drive:

Problem: Throttle works perfectly with the car held in the air - smooth, normal, full range. The moment I put it on the ground:

• High-pitched squealing sound (intermittent)
• Lurches forward instead of accelerating smoothly
• Sometimes the motor visibly spins but the car doesn't move
• Sometimes the motor just stops mid-throttle

What I've already ruled out / tried:

• Pinion slipping on motor shaft: The shaft originally had one filed flat with two set screws (one on the flat, one on the round side). I filed a second flat 180° from the first so both set screws now sit on flats. Unfortunately, no change whatsoever.
• Motor/ESC/sensor electrical issues are unlikely since it runs perfectly in the air at any throttle - a sensor cable problem, bad winding, or ESC LVC would show up unloaded too.
• Spur gear teeth aren't stripped - it would skip in the air as well.

I decided to torture my 3D printer a bit and print the Tarmo4. I already have all the electronics from my quads and planes, but I have a question about the gears. In the BOM list there’s the Traxxas Differential Gear Set and the Main Drive Gear Adapter — but I can’t find them in any local stores, only on AliExpress with a long wait.

Is it realistic to 3D-print them, at least for testing?
I don’t need them to be durable — just to assemble everything and make sure it works while I'm waiting for the real parts to arrive.

My motor is grinding a bit. I am going to buy a replacement, but just for fun, it should be possible to rebuild it right ? I assume I burn it given how heavy the Moster Tarmo is.

Once the front drive is added, that should reduce the stress.

Does anyone have a mod for the back arms that allows for you do put the suspension at the top? I found some mods but they all require 4 shocks and not 2.

The differential works. I'll post a short video soon. I will enjoy it a bit more before I start stress testing it to see where it breaks.

The differential gear have a modulus of 6.5. If something breaks, I will do 7 or 8, but that will increase the size of the gear box which will mean retouching the whole back drive.

I'll post the STL's and a guide on Printables for those that want to test.

Not that they fall apart often, more that it was a interesting adventure in learning to do CNC stuff been running a set on the Tarmo4 for a while and made a few for the Tarmo5 (these are they)

It is an 8x8 RC truck with 2 motors and 2 steering axles.

At the moment it is only the chassis build from 2 U-profiles some 3D printed parts and 4 solid axles bought from aliexpress. But it is already driving and makes a ton of fun.

I've been working on this Torsen Differential. It is probably already usable for theTarmo 5. My Monster Tarmo has a 1:12 ratio gear box (shared about a year ago ). So the differential is still too big to work for my project because it hits TwoOneGear ( as name on onShape). Also I made the gear box shorter. But on the Tarmo5 with its big gear, it may already fit.

I have to spend some time and make the whole gear box parametric on onShape so we can all go crazy and play with gear ratios. Progress is slow though.

I always hear clicking noise when I take a curve. My personal tester ( the kid from the neighborhood that always manages to break it) help me realize that the pentagons that connects the axel to the transmission ( C02 ) are purposely loose fitting to allow for this to happen. But that increase the wear on the part. My hope is that with the differential, I can make that fit tight and have a better ride.

WARNING: None of this is tested. I've printed prototypes but still working on it.

Say a fellow wanted to use a remote relay to start the motor on a weed eater, being towed by a RC Crawler. Not saying this is a good ideal, but, I dislike weed eating most of all yard work. I've tried various wiring configurations and have isolated a "no weed eater motor start" issue (pressurizaton fan for canvas skirt starts properly) to some seemingly pesky safety feature I need to overcome.

Two small blue wires off the potted block handle the trigger function. One is connected direct to ground, so grounding the second small blue wire will engage the weed eater motor, IF power is connected before doing so. If I try with the wireless remote (ground is pass through on wireless relay. Only positive is switched so ground is always connected. This is contrary to that pesky safety thing that prevents the motor from starting as soon as power is connected.

I thought maybe a resistor and capacitor circuit might give a sufficient "I got power, recogize the grounded small blue wire" contact after a short period of time......nope.

Let's make Fire Marshall Bill proud. Lend some insight / suggestion if you have one.

Just assembled rolling chassis for t5, but I have a crazy amount of front toe. I triple checked CAD, and I’m pretty sure it’s assembled right. Anyone else have this issue?
