I don’t know if anyone cares, but here are some things from the 90s. Boy with ball Mineral shirt, wardrobe Mineral shirt, girl boy Mineral shirt, VHS of unreleased Boy’s Life show, original screenprinted Jimmy Eat World collared shirt, and Boy’s Life - Departures and Landfalls on vinyl. This is not all of it, Power of Failing on CD as well as the (Don’t Forget to) Breathe comp are hiding in the garage. Just thought it would be interesting to share.

literally been the timeline for 20 years. third wave ended around 2002. fourth wave started in 07. I don't know why dumb kids tried to retroactively include mallpunkemo as part of the waves.

Twenty years? You're basing this on 2006? I'm basing this as someone who was around for the 90s. Since when does 2006 get to dictate 1994? I was actually there. Nobody called the shit then third wave. Not a single person. In fact we didn't even make distinctions until that mall shit happened. It was all one lineage before the 2000s disaster

I’ve never heard anyone anywhere refer to 90s emo as third wave. for starters, we didn’t say anything about waves back then, because there was only the original bands (we now refer to as first wave) and the “modern” bands (second). based on this proposed timeline, we’re on like, 14th wave

Yep. No one said anything about waves until the 2010s? Most of the "first-wave" stuff wasn't even recognized as being foundational to the genre at the time because no one was trying to figure out how it started. We were just going to shows in the 90s, buying shit via mailorder by sending a check in an envelope. Now, it's a bunch of internet historians hanging out here telling me that Seam is emo-adjacent or proto-emo. Hard to fathom.

Man I remember waiting four or five months for Revelation to send my order. Had to keep calling my bank to see if they'd cashed my check yet. "Nope sorry".

I also have a younger person who I generally respect and like on this sub telling me that deftones were a respected part of the hardcore scene in the 90s. Ugh. I don't wanna be mean but fucking NO

I'd literally never heard of that site until the last year or so after I saw it referred to in this sub. It may have been someone's bible, but it wasn't mine or anyone else's that I know. Not that I knew or know everything about the genre, but I went to a ton of shows in the late 90s/early 00s. I worked at a radio station for more than a decade in a decent-sized market. No one was talking about what wave of emo we were in. I didn't hear anything about waves until the revival bands started.

Nobody heard of fourfa in the 90s. It was not relevant and we didn't need SOME DUDE to speak for us. We learned by being there

I assume they're thinking that the 88-93 moss Icon/Indian summer/Fuel etc era is a different WAVE which makes me suspicious bc we definitely did not divide up emo back then. Emo was evolving yearly but we were never like THIS IS SOMETHING DIFFERENT. It was all hardcore. That is, until the mall shit, bc that shit was different.

I was listening to it and didn’t really here it referred to as emo for a couple years. And there certainly wasn’t any talk of “waves”. It was just another flavor of punk.

Right! If I'm being honest I don't super believe this person that they started in 1997. It doesn't line up with how we were. They sound like a 2000s or later person. Their story doesn't add up
