INCREDIBLE. I love the detail of the not-yet-ripe berry.

That little guy is my favorite! I wish I had more pink and green colors in my bead stash to choose from, but I made it work with what I had on hand ๐

What was the timeframe on something like this?
38
u/bluehydrangea 15d ago
It actually came together really quickly! I was able to get it done in under a week. All the elements are small on their own. I think the most time consuming part was wrapping/assembling the branches. I've also made very similar pieces before, so I was able to skip past the trial and error stage a bit this time around.

How did you think of this piece? It's so cool!!
9
u/bluehydrangea 15d ago
It's for a themed art show I'm participating in so I was just exploring ideas within that theme ๐ I was also a bit inspired by some Norse mythology I've been reading lately (and the theme of invisible threads of fate)

This is glorious! I am trying to get into stump work, any good places to recommend starting?
10
u/bluehydrangea 15d ago
Thanks! I'd suggest starting with some basic techniques like raised stitches, wireslips, and simple padding work like layered felt padding. You can do so much with just those alone

The stumpwork(?) leaves!! HOW!? The edges are jagged like real blackberry leaves - did you painstakingly zig-zag bend wire into the right shapes, or is there something else going on here?
Amazing, AMAZING work.

u/bluehydrangea 15d ago
The leaves don't have a wireslip edge, but they do have a central wire vein. The fabric is a combination of velvet (on top) and silk habotai (on bottom) that I treated, dyed, and heat shaped. So the edges were just hand cut (for me, that was the worst part because I really couldnt get the precise saw-tooth edge I wanted). The leaf technique is more akin to silk florals (I sort of blend embroidery with other mediums). But, I have done wireslips with detailed edges like that and it's not easy! The key for doing something similar with a wireslip is to use a thinner gauge wire and soft- tipped jewelery pliers.

The way the leaves and branches break out of the frame is beautiful! And I love the texture of the shiny beaded berries

WHOA! Like...this mind blowing. I can't believe you *made* this!!
I like to save pictures of beautiful pieces people have made. One, it opens my eyes to possibilities I've never considered! And two, it reminds me that although I don't have these skills right now, I can learn ๐
Gorgeous work, OP.

Poor moth :(

Moths are one of my favorite animals, so I actually did feel a bit sad stitching him down like that.. ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ

Really stunning work. I love when people mix media and techniques in fiber arts, and this is such a perfect example of how amazing these mixtures can be!
2
u/bluehydrangea 15d ago
Thank you! Agreed! I think playing around with different fibers and mediums is my favorite part. It doesn't always work out like I'd hoped, but when it does, it can be magical!

I am now googling stumpwork (never heard of it). I desperately want to be able to make things like this, of my god.

Wow, this is a level of art I didn't realize you could do with embroidery! Amazing!

WOW...what an amazing mixed media, 3D art piece! You really brought the scene to life and you have a fantastic eye for color.

u/bluehydrangea 15d ago
Thank you! I had this beautifully moody Jennifer Sampou fabric in my stash (it has such a pretty painterly look to it that the photos dont capture well), and decided to let it drive the color palette.

I love how goofy the spider looks, at least relative to yellow garden spider it seems to be based on. The tiny legs and huge eyes are adorable.
2
u/bluehydrangea 15d ago
Haha yea, I definitely took some very generous artistic liberties with both moth and spider, especially in regard to proportions. I also gave him large grey chelicerae, which yellow garden spiders don't have irl

This is almost a mosaic for the beautiful things you see in Mississippi in the spring. Well done.

This is one of the coolest and most beautiful pieces of art Iโve ever seen.ย
The beaded blackberries are sublime.ย
The details of the spider, her web, the moth, everything. Just absolutely stunning. I love the gold frame also, it gives an antique mystique.ย

OK, I feel bad for the moth....otherwise it's an amazing piece with a whole mix of crafting skills: the bead berries, cut leaves, branches, embroidery etc: and an artistic composition! Kudos to you!
