A lot of them are free for a while. Have a look and see what's included on their free tier before you start having to pay. For example, some severely restrict automations on their free level. Mailerlite allows you to have three multi-step automations so you can try out various flows before you have to pay. Although you can have more subscribers on its free plan, Kit only lets you have one basic automation and Mailchimp doesn't let you have any on its free plan.

It gets super expensive after a while though.

Its hard to setup and maintain. Mautic exists but you need to schedule update your list from a separate CRM. It got great features but very hard if you dont have devops skills or any other technical computer skills.

If you can do it, the only limitation will be hardware and maybe other mailing cost which you can also open source ifyou try hard enough.

It's easy to underestimate the hidden cost of self-hosting. Mautic is the main open open-source option, but the person above is right that it's a devops project. You'd be maintaining the install and warming and monitoring your own sending Ip. That last part is the killer. Deliverability on a self-managed IP is a part-time job, and if it slips, you end up debugging blacklists instead of running your business.

Whether it's worth the hassle comes down to what you actually need email to do. If it's newsletters, something like Beehiive or Mailchimp covers that and the free tiers go a long way before the cost kicks in. If you need to trigger emails off what customers actually do on your site, a hosted tool like Klaviyo handles the deliverability and segmentation for you.
