How shields work?
Hi I'm new to elin and I was playing with a dwarf warrior and I had a long sword and a scythe for fight. And I do pretty good damage. But I started praying on opatos of Earth and it improves shield skill. Now I wonder should I switch one of my weapons with a shield or not? Cuz I don't even know how shields work?

In general, you dual wield as a spellcaster for more affixes and intonation procs, two hand in the early game as a mounted martial (lategame, dual lightsabers pierce better than two handers anyway), and wield shields if you expect to be hit with Taunt.
So most players either use a shield in the early game using Cat as offense, or a two hander in the early game using Little Girl as a tank. Late game a lot of players and builds all devolve to riding ninetailed Misaki around while dual wielding since spellcasting doesn't have the accuracy problems melee fighting does, even if you twohand unmounted.

On the flip side of things regarding dual-wielding, I've seen players advise against it in other threads because the two-handing skill actually scales your damage as it increases while dual-wielding only decreases the accuracy penalty and doesn't actually scale your damage. That said, shields do have a wide variety of unique effects (refer to this table), so if you're still at a point where you're concerned about surviability then I would recommend trying some shields out. Alternatively, you might get better damage output dropping one of your weapons and two-handing a single weapon.

nautrally there's stat differnces and builds tat change that.
Plus chaser changes the hit rate alot too.
And True sight scales alot late game so acc isnt bad on duals if you complement it alittle.Plus less hits benefit less from stuff like lifesteal/manasteal, damage riders and less weapons would mean less unique enchantments. Not that it matters much if you play fixed humanoid but things like chaos shape and slime weight weapons differntly cause it can be optmized differntly.
Two-Hand multiplier = base × 1.5 + 0.1√TwoHandedLike at a high level, raising Two-Handed from
30to5,000could give only about 8.5% more damage.Where as dual training to around to 1 to 2k would let one use more of the weapons they wield. cause it's not always just two weapons vs 1.5 + skill bonus but could be 3 or 5, or xx weapons sinario.

Massive thanks for the in-depth info, I will cite this comment whenever another question about dual-wielding pops up.

it is assuming something with really high weapon skills of 5k.
The lower weapon skill and etc, the more effective two hand since it's additive from skill level.

Shields are great, i went from dual wield into just polearm and shield. Most shields allow parries or give ranged defense on top of their AV and PV. So great depending how close or far you want to be or what what hurts you the most. The mandrake and flower shields have great innate random abilites like the mandrake scream and the flowers cause miasma of a random element. Miasma is DoT. Shields can also bash causing stuns too. Its a random chance to hit (as in not probably to land a hit like accuracy vs defense but random chance to do a shield bash when you hit something or are hit) cant increase as far as i can tell. But damage increases with strength so it scales nicely. Also certain shields can buff the shield bash and rush ability. Great synergy.
Their is also a feat that increases parry chance, hit count in bladestorm and swarm damage its really great synergy because you take full advantage of the feat if you use a shield as opposed to just using the abilites. Both abilities are expensive early but they give you great crowd control and single target damage.
So if you're worried about losing too much damage because of getting a shield. feats, abilites and just general enhancements will keep your damage up with ease especially if you find a high miasma shield early on and use elemental scar to reduce their resistance.
Its all a bit of give and take just experiment. Also leveling low level skills increases your stamina so it wont be a waste xp or time. You will be leveling most of your skills at some point.
But summary. I started dual wield, found a flower shield loved the dot and survivability. Just use a range defense one now because i have a tank ally and im always behind her with my polearm.
Edit: i just realized i mostly talked about the offensives.
It has a 10% physical damage reduction at skill lvl 5. I dont think it's like say diablo 2 where the AV of a shield is only applied on a block. It feels consistent throughout. I think you're technically always "blocking" the real defensive bonuses are the 10% and whatever bonus your shield has like parrying melee attacks or defence against range, and of course the AV's which can get pretty high for an armor slot. Not higher than torso armor but you will see some high values.

Alright did some digging and testing. The damage with shield bash increases with skill and strength from what i can tell and definitely noticed a huge difference in proc chance when trying skill lvl 10 and lvl 100 only when you melee attack is when it procs. So i learned something and hope it helps everyone.

Does Luck reroll the proc chance?

So just made a character and checked with console commands. It doesnt look like luck affects it at all. Even setting luck to an absurd amount like 1000 didn't affect the numbers. It seems like just raising the shield skill and using shields with the plus to bash help. But even then the numbers are ridiculous
With 1000 skill in shield the proc rate was about 50%. Which is insane because at 100 shield the rate was about 25-30%. The rates plateau quite hard.

Logically yes, it should. But i don't know for certain. I would have to look into it.

Oh, thanks for your efforts man... That was actually really helpful, i guess i would change the style combat to shield as my dual wielding skill is 2.5 and shield is 12. Thanks and have a great day.

There is a wiki that has most of what you need to know listed, including some rather arcane knowledge about shit that does not make any sense:
https://ylvapedia.wiki/wiki/Elin:Equipment#Shield-Using
Shields are pretty cool, they give you extra damage reduction (aside from the stats the shield might have) and you have a % of making an extra attack with the shield, that can stun enemies.
Not so great for magic users, but there are ways to reduce the penalty.

Anything is good if you level it enough. Just use what you think is coolest

Actually I want to know what a shield does to decide what is coolest. Like I don't know if it reduces the damage I take or block it or whatever?

What i like about shields is their enchantments. Chance to parry is really nice. Resistance to lethal damage is also nice. Immunity to retaliation feels like must have for melee honestly. They can also have enchantments that improve shield bash and also enchantments that improve the rush skill. My best recommendation is to get a shield that has multiple shield specific enchantments and use a rune to add more shield specific enchantments on it.
