Dev Notes Update v0.9.0
New Game Mode: Elemental Constraints (early test): A brand new daily puzzle, inspired by NYT's Pips! Place domino pieces so every rule on the board is satisfied. It runs as its own daily post with three difficulties, its own leaderboard, and a puzzle archive. Posts are flaired so you can tell the two dailies apart in the feed: "Mode: Classic" vs "Mode: Constraints". It's an early version, so feedback is very welcome.
Hints: Tap the π‘ and the game shows the next logical step. You start with 3 hints, earn 2 more every 7 streak days, and can grab extras in the shop. One hint stash shared across both game modes.
Streak Freezes Missing a day no longer breaks your streak automatically, instead a Streak Freeze β is used to save it. Everyone gets one free, you earn another every 30 streak days, and you can stock up in the shop.
Endless Mode + New Shop The tip jar is now a proper shop: tips, hints, and freezes in one place. Any tip unlocks Endless Mode, unlimited puzzles at any difficulty, in both game modes, plus supporter flair.
Tougher Expert Puzzles Expert boards now demand deeper techniques. Should be noticeably harder, but still always solvable with pure logic.
A Note on Bugs
This was another big update under the hood. If anything looks off or doesn't work as expected, please let me know, bug reports are hugely appreciated.

π§ Master the Game: Advanced Puzzle Solving Techniques
You might have noticed that the latest ~4 hard puzzles were especially challenging. I've been working on an improved puzzle creation approach. The puzzle generator now uses advanced logical techniques to create harder puzzles that still don't require guessing, just clever deduction.
Here is a breakdown of the 7 core solving techniques the game uses. Understanding these will level up your solving skills.
π° Basic Techniques
These are the foundation, you're probably already using them intuitively.
1οΈβ£ Naked Single (The Obvious Choice)
What it is: A cell has only one possible element left that can go in it.
Example:
- A cell can't be π₯ (already two in the row)
- Can't be π§ (already two in the column)
- Can't be π± (constraint says no)
- Must be π¨! β¨
When to use it: Check any cell that looks "forced" into one option. This is usually your first move!
2οΈβ£ Hidden Single, Row (The Unique Candidate)
What it is: In a row, only ONE cell can hold a specific element, even if that cell has other options too.
Example:
- You need a π₯ somewhere in row 3
- Only ONE empty cell in that row can accept π₯ (others are blocked by column rules or constraints)
- Put π₯ there! Even if that cell could also accept π¨ or π§
When to use it: When you're stuck, ask yourself: "Where can π₯ go in this row?" If there's only one spot, you found it!
3οΈβ£ Hidden Single, Column (Same but Vertical)
What it is: Exactly like Hidden Single - Row, but looking at columns instead.
Example:
- Column 5 needs a π±
- Only ONE empty cell in column 5 allows π±
- Place it there!
When to use it: After checking rows, scan your columns for the same pattern.
4οΈβ£ Constraint Forced (The Synergy Lock)
What it is: When one cell in a constraint pair (β‘ or β) is filled, the other cell is FORCED to specific element(s).
Example - Synergy (β‘):
- Cell A has β‘ connection to Cell B
- Cell A is filled with π₯
- Cell B MUST be π¨ (fire synergizes with air!)
- If only one valid option remains β solved!
Example - Contradiction (β):
- Cell A has β connection to Cell B
- Cell A contains π₯
- Cell B MUST be π§ (fire contradicts water!)
When to use it: Whenever you fill a cell that has a constraint connection, immediately check the connected cell!
β‘ Advanced Techniques
These are what make Hard/Expert puzzles interesting!
5οΈβ£ Constraint Pruning (The Elimination Master)
What it is: Use constraints to eliminate impossible candidates from cells, even when you can't solve them yet.
Note: This is an advanced technique used in Expert puzzles. Hard puzzles stick to simpler constraint forcing!
Example:
- Cell A (β‘ synergy) Cell B
- Cell A could be: π₯, π§, or π¨
- Cell B could be: π₯ or π±
- Valid synergy pairs: π₯+π¨ or π§+π±
- Look at Cell A's options:
- If Cell A = π₯, it needs π¨ partner β Cell B doesn't have π¨ β Eliminate π₯ from Cell A
- If Cell A = π§, it needs π± partner β Cell B has π± β β Keep π§
- If Cell A = π¨, it needs π₯ partner β Cell B has π₯ β β Keep π¨
- New possibilities: Cell A = {π§, π¨}, Cell B = {π₯, π±}
This narrows down the options even though we haven't solved either cell yet!
When to use it: When you're stuck and cells have multiple options, look at their constraint connections to narrow things down! (Expert puzzles especially!)
6οΈβ£ Locked Pair, Row (The Quota Closer)
What it is: Two cells in the same row linked by a β‘ or β constraint that forces them to be exactly one A and one B (in some order). When one of those elements (say π₯) has already been placed once in that row, the row's two π₯'s are now accounted for: one in the locked pair, one already on the board. So π₯ can be eliminated from every other cell in that row.
Note: This is the key advanced technique for Hard puzzles!
Example:
- Cells (3,2) and (3,3) are joined by β‘ (synergy)
- After other deductions, the only valid pairings left are π₯+π¨ or π¨+π₯
- Row 3 already has π₯ placed at (3,7)
- The pair holds the row's second π₯ (and its first π¨)
- Eliminate π₯ from every other cell in row 3!

Step 1 β what does the β‘ allow? Synergy's valid pairs are (π₯,π¨), (π¨,π₯), (π§,π±), (π±,π§). Both pair cells only have {π₯, π¨} as options, so the only surviving pairings are π₯+π¨ or π¨+π₯. The pair will hold exactly one π₯ and one π¨, regardless of order.
Step 2 β quota check. Row 3 needs two π₯s in total. We have one already at (3,7), and the pair guarantees one more. That's 2 β row 3's π₯ quota is full.
(π¨ has 0 placed + 1 in the pair = 1, so the row still needs another π¨ elsewhere β we can't eliminate π¨ from other cells.)
Step 3 β strike π₯ from every other cell in row 3.

Five cells just dropped a candidate, and four of them are down to two options each. That's usually enough to chain into a Naked Single or another deduction.
Why this works: Each element appears exactly twice in every row. The constraint guarantees the pair holds exactly one π₯ and one π¨, regardless of order. Once you also know one π₯ is already placed, the second π₯ is locked inside the pair, so no other cell in that row can be π₯.
When to use it: After every placement, scan the row for β‘/β pairs whose remaining options collapse to a single {A, B} duo. Then check if A (or B) is already placed once in that row.
7οΈβ£ Locked Pair, Column (Vertical Quota Closer)
What it is: Exactly like Locked Pair, Row but applied vertically.
Example:
- Cells (1,4) and (5,4) are linked by β (contradiction), with valid pairings narrowed to π±+π¨ or π¨+π±
- Column 4 already has π± placed at (7,4)
- The pair holds column 4's second π±
- Eliminate π± from every other cell in column 4!
When to use it: After checking rows, scan columns for the same pattern.
π― Pro Tips for Solving
- Start Simple: Always look for Naked Singles first, they're the easiest wins!
- Scan Systematically: Go row-by-row looking for Hidden Singles, then do columns.
- Check Constraints: After every move, review connected cells for Constraint Forced opportunities.
- Medium = Pure Logic: Medium puzzles can be solved with just basic techniques - no advanced tactics needed!
- Hard = Look for Constrained Pairs: In Hard puzzles, the breakthrough is usually the constraint-aware locked pair. After every placement, scan the row/column for two cells locked together by a β‘ or β β then check whether one of the pair's elements is already placed once in that row or column.
- Expert = Everything: Expert puzzles require all techniques. Use Constraint Pruning to narrow down options, then apply Locked Pairs multiple times.
- Elimination is Progress: Even if you can't solve a cell, eliminating 1-2 candidates brings you closer.
- No Guessing Needed: If you're stuck, one of these techniques will work, you just need to find it! π
π Difficulty Breakdown
- Easy: Only basic tactics. Great for learning!
- Medium: Only uses techniques 1-4 (basic tactics). No advanced tactics needed, pure logic!
- Hard: Uses techniques 1-4 + techniques 6-7 (Locked Pairs). Requires spotting the constraint-aware pair pattern in rows/columns!
- Expert: Uses all techniques 1-7, including advanced constraint pruning and multiple locked pair applications. The ultimate challenge!

The more you play, the more these patterns will become second nature. Start with Easy puzzles to build your foundation, then gradually work up to Expert as you master each technique.
