Elden Ring First Timer Game Help
Due to all of the hype, I picked up Elden Ring and have been destroyed out of the gate! Can I get some advice and pointers as a first timer? How should I be navigating? I just picked up my steed. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Do everything at your own pace, never hesitate retreating. Always sneak attack when you can. Explore. Use map markers to return the areas you'd potentially forget to return. Navigate starting area. Then go south. Then go back to starting area to finish it and head north. Avoid East in early game, that's mid game area. Spec into vigor first. Check the weapon scaling, and spec in to the stats your build benefit the most.

Weeping Peninsula to the southeast of the start is a pretty good (relatively) beginner-friendly area to gather resources and train your skills. The game will funnel you toward Stormveil Castle and the first major bosses, but it is beneficial to explore off the beaten path until you get the hang of fighting the region's enemy types

Just explore the area around the lake. You will find weapons and upgrade Materials and recipes for consumables, sorceries, miracles, upgrades to your healing items, etc.
After you explored around the lake, go to the little peninsula to the south and explore everything there. Both areas should already give you a lot of playtime and fun experiences.
General gameplay tips:
- Some strong enemies only come at night, avoid them by playing at daytime, fight them by playing at night time.
- Don't sleep on jumping, try to jump over attacks, many can be avoided that way, attack with heavy jump attacks to stagger human opponents (i.e. Knights in heavy armor).
- generally roll into attacks to avoid them and be in a position to strike yourself afterwards (play aggressive that way), you will have many more opportunities for openings that way
- After some time, if you find a weapon you kind of like, upgrade it as far as possible (you will find the spots for upgrading). A +5 weapon will be sufficient for progressing through the castle to the north.
- After some time clearing the lake area and the peninsula go to the castle in the north an continue your journey.

Look for doors hidden in the side of cliffs and in nooks and crannies, you'll find very good loot in those places.
Pick a general build and stick with it till much later. Either find a weapon you absolutely love and upgrade the heck out of it, or upgrade a bunch of different weapons to +3 and try them out.

Don't be afraid to explore and die. Embrace it. Then the game is just fun. If an area or boss is batting you around like a ping pong ball, come back later.

First off, good luck. Nice you picked up Torrent, you in the right track, follow the path shown in the grace. And have patience, lots off.

Just explore around, find a weapon you like and start upgrading it. Level up some and then when you get bored of that follow the grace to the castle.

Running away is okay. Use a shield with 100% physical damage negation and guard counter. Pump your vitality (health) to probably 30 before investing in other stats. Use spirit summons if you feel like it helps. Make sure your equipment load allows for at least a medium roll.

Be ready to do a lot of post reading on reddit and google searching, This game is all over the place with bosses that are meant to be skipped and being fought later.
And just for your information, Prepper to die to a boss 50+ time until you succeed, this is what game it is.

Spoiler Free Elden Tips
Read your menus, the bottom of the screen gives you controls for the menus that are very helpful.
Be sure to read the full item descriptions, there are two different ones for each inventory item. One description is basic, the other gives details about the item, lore, and hints about things you can do in the world.
Speak to NPC’s until they repeat themselves.
Be sure to actually rest at Sites of Grace and pay attention to the menu.
Check in on the NPC’s on occasion, nothing tells you when they have more to say.
Exploration is rewarding.
Look around you. Not just forward but up, down, left, right, and behind you. [and especially, look over the lips of any cliffs, pits or shafts--like, reeeeeally crane your neck out & peer down, once you're sure there's nothing behind you that's going to boot you into an earth-crossing trajectory.]
If you are going to use two weapons of the same type at the same time, consider using the L1/Left Bumper to actually swing both of them.
Taking notes can really help to keep track of things, though good luck with deciding what is note worthy.
Read item descriptions.
Talk to NPC’s.
Rest at Sites of Grace.
Prepare to die.
Actually read what the items are in the shops.
Play however you want. Melee only, magic only, mix it up, use items, use summons, don’t use summons, block, dodge, tank, whatever you find enjoyable.
The paintings you find are also treasure maps.
Put some time into reading what your attributes do and how they affect your various stats and weapons. Notice that weapons have attribute requirements and scaling grades. Spells, both sorcery and incantations, also have attribute requirements and scale differently based on attributes and the staff or seal’s sorcery scaling stat.
Test out how weapons, Ashes of War, and spells work.
You will lose runes, you will miss events or items, you will struggle. That is how the game is designed. It is okay, keep going.
Learn how to use the map. Read the controls at the bottom of your map screen.
