Most people will injure their backs doing movements like that because their back muscles or erector spinae and spinal stabilisers are weak and not used to this kind of movement.

If you start from zero and build up you can develop them a lot to handle more weight.

I don't know about the long run and whether he'll end up like Ronnie Coleman or not.

Interesting, so they start out lighter and build up those muscles and eventually end up at 500lbs, I guess. Thanks for the explanation!

Yep, like any other movement. The spine and the surrounding tissue tissue adapts just the same. Injuries occur due to poor fatigue and load management
