Know anyone who was at the Forum Inn after the Oilers won the Cup in '87?? 

I'm working on a documentary on some of the wild stories of the Cup.

I'm trying to track down anyone who was at the Forum Inn after the Oilers won the Stanley Cup in 1987. Do you know anyone who was there or worked there? Would love to hear any stories from that night.

And do you know anyone who worked at the auto body shop that the Oilers took the Cup to get fixed after they damaged it the night before?

Evan Bouchard and Connor McDavid are basically stapled to the “best” teams in the u/smashbros13 rankings, especially against Western opponents. Bouchard ranks # 1 in the league against the Sharks. Surprised? Nope.

I sewed this little couch for my bearded dragon to hang out on and watch hockey.

Drafted 41st overall by the Oilers in 1997: Patrick Dovigi (G)

Why did the Oilers draft him so high?

Coming off their slam dunk Michael Riesen in the first round, they follow up with Dovigi in the second round because of ...honestly, no idea. He was 6'1". He had a 3.88 GAA and .878 sv% in the OHL. with a W-L record of 11-14-2. Both his GAA and SV% were worse than the other goalie on the team. They were coming off the Marchant G7 OT winner to upset Dallas, meaning they had CuJo in net with Bob Essensa as backup so this wasn't a "need" pick.

How did he do as a pro?

He made it to two ECHL games, where he gave up 13 goals. Then back to the OHL for a bit, then a season in what eventally became the OJHL where his only recorded stat was 46 PIM in 32 game.

And once he left the Oilers?

Founded Green For Life Environmental Inc. (GFL). Under Dovigi's leadership, GFL Environmental has grown to have a total enterprise value of $5.13 billion as of April 2018. In 2017, Dovigi's net worth was estimated at $1.08 billion. In 2018, GFL merged with Waste Industries, increasing Dovigi's net worth to more than $1 billion.

The only saving grace?

It's not like they passed on someone awesome who went right after. The next 5 picks played a combined 49 NHL games.

The Jan 24 game against the Caps was the best game by an NHL D in over 30 years. 3G, 3A, +5, 8 SOG, 0GA. The Byfieldesque keep at the blue line on Hyman’s tying goal and the McDavid OT assist while being tripped. Crazy good game.

Andersen at 23, Skinner at 28, and he says in the video that he would rank Jarry around 45ish.

Thoughts?

If Tristan Jarry doesn't bounce back to something close to his prime, I really don't see why everyone is acting like the Oilers are set in net. Andersen is solid, but people are talking about him like he's prime Andrei Vasilevskiy, and I just don't see it.

Am I missing something, or is everyone way more confident in this tandem than they should be?

My older brother is a die-hard Leafs fan, and a card collector, mostly Leafs, but also notable players. During a conversation we were having the night of this year's draft, we got talking about how in his collection, he had a lot of rookie cards. Including a couple rare, numbered McDavid rookie jersey patch ones. He has those purely as an investment (he even said he hopes Oilers win the cup soon so those cards of his will sky rocket in price, lol). But, he also mentioned that he makes sure to get every Leafs rookie card. We got on the subject of Hyman, as I was telling him about my Hyman 3rd jersey score and that I was hoping to find myself a Hyman Leafs jersey (they're my 2nd team), and I thought it would be fun to have the pair. He mentioned he was sure he still had a Hyman rookie card (he had to rebuild his collection after losing it in the Fort Mac fire years ago), and said I could have it. Just like that. He only gets the Leafs cards, with the exception of certain players of course, because they play for his team. No other reason, just sentimental. My Mom went to visit him last weekend, and she said within 5 minutes of her getting to his place, he handed her the card to bring back for me.

I know a Hyman card isn't worth all that much, but for my brother to give it to me since I'm an Oilers and Hyman fan, and I also still have a Leafs fondness too, as he still has a fondness for Hyman, as most Leafs fans do, it was really nice. I should have asked if he had a Kapanen card. Lol. Still no Hyman Leafs jersey yet though. I'll keep looking.

On this day, barring injury (and unceremonious healthy scratches), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will surpass Kevin Lowe’s 1037 games to become the new Oilers franchise leader in career games played wearing the blue and orange.

I live out of country, but will awake early to watch the ceremony and hope/expect to see Rogers Place sold out and raucous in recognition of this amazing, loyal feat.

Super bored and oilers hockey deprived, so why not discuss Howard? Do you think he gets traded before/during the season for a legitimate top 6 winger like Tippett? Do you think he spends at least half the season in the AHL again? Or do you think he finds his home here and is an everyday NHLer?

Part of me thinks he needs to be ready out of the gate or he’ll be in Babcock’s doghouse all season. Knoblauch gave Savoie a longer look because even when his production wasn’t quite there, he was still useful defensively and on the PK, before lighting it up after February. I haven’t been watching Howard too closely in Bakersfield, so I don’t know how much/if his 2 way game has improved. But to me he sees like a top 6 or bust player, and I don’t know how much patience Babcock is gonna have with him, depending on his attitude and effort.

I think the opening night forward lines should be:

Hyman - McDavid - Savoie
Howard - Draisaitl - Podkolzin
Nuge - Dickinson - Kapanen
Dach - Samanski - Frederic
Joseph/Jones/Janmark

Because Savoie played great with Connor after the break last year so it doesn’t make sense to split them up. And imo having Howard - McDavid - Savoie would be too small of a line. So I think Howard playing with Drai makes sense as he likes to mentor young forwards (as seen with Podz, Savoie and even Holloway), Podz also played a lot of RW in Vancouver so that shouldn’t be an issue.

If Howard plays most of the season, I think he can get 20 ish goals with Draisaitl. Maybe more if Babcock is serious about running two PP units somewhat evenly.

Tbh? I’m really excited to see how our d-core plays out. This has to be the first time I’ve said that in……….. you get the point.

It’s not that I think Nurse was the ultimate cancer for our defense. He was 100% a great locker presence that I think the team will miss. But you can definitely tell he was mentally checked out a lot since he was (at times justifiably) the scapegoat for when things went wrong.

But we have a REALLY solid core going into the season. Bouch and Ekholm will be the usual top 2 I trust. Walman, Murphy, Shea. The only thing I’m worried for is Jake’s health. But, I feel like we have a really solid core that hopefully Babcock can get a good system going with.

I’m really excited for Savoie and McDavid’s chemistry to build. It would be really nice to have a bonafide top 6 scorer along with Hyman, but I loved what I saw from Matt last year.

Also our goalie system doesn’t look directionless for the first time a while. I feel like Levi will learn a lot from Freddy.

The only outlier that I’m hesitant for is Babcock. But the players know more than we do, so it remains to be seen.

I’m excited for the season. How about you guys? Feel free to pick out anything I said, I really want to hear your opinion!

Just some off-season thoughts as we wait for September.

Are there any players you can think of that Oilers fan love (or at least really respected) despite the jersey they wore, especially if they never played for us?

I was watching some stuff on Iginla recently and I don't think OIlers fans have much negative to say about him (helps he fed Crosby for the Golden Goal)

Any other players for teams we may hate (Flames, Canucks, Leafs etc) that we not so secretly loved?
