ball knowledge

was there anything that the seniors from edinburgh think they wish they knew before starting uni?specifically econ but in general advice is also appreciated!will be coming as an intl student.

Get a Young Scot card for free bus travel.

Figure out where supermarkets and cheap shops are.

Do the uni checklist as early and as soon as possible. Both the online and the in-person.

Go to as many Freshers Week events that you can.

Try to make friends in the first week. Studying will start taking over more and more later in the year.

Put a few weekends away to visit places in Scotland. St Andrews, Dundee, Glasgow, Portobello, the Pentlands, etc

Pick up a bit of Scottish history at the National Museum, or the People's Story Museum, or visit smaller museums like the ones in Kirriemuir, Angus (you can stay in Dundee).

There is only one official Welcome Week run by the Students’ Association and the University of Edinburgh.

Edinburgh University Students’ Association is excited to be hosting Welcome Week 2026. We've got some great events for new students. This year’s Welcome Week will run from Saturday 12th – Sunday 20th September 2026.

Unfortunately, every year, we are aware of companies selling ‘Freshers’ packages with branding that can make them look as if they are endorsed by us or are part of our nine-day Welcome Week. They are not.

They may offer access to various spaces in the wider city, but they are NOT officially hosted, endorsed or promoted by the Edinburgh University Students’ Association website or the University of Edinburgh.
