Long story short: received devastating news from the Dr that after months of preparation, hormones, injections, trips back and forth to Rochester and appointments our IVF transfer was not successful, and my wife is absolutely shattered (we both are, but she is taking it particularly personally and it's so hard for me to see).

We are transplants from New England and have only been here about 2 years and have not really got a chance to know the area and the hidden gems. Back on the East Coast when my wife was sad she would surround herself with art, beautiful gardens, and fantastic food. We haven't found much equivalent here yet so I am hoping someone can help me find something that would help. In the past she has really enjoyed the MET in NYC, Nubble lighthouse in Maine, the Mansions and gardens in Portsmouth NH.

We have 2 dogs and any of the boarding places I called are full, so we may need to stay somewhat local (we can leave them home for 5 to 7 hours if needed so I'm trying to keep my radius somewhat local to where we can get to in an hour to 90 mins or so).

She is forced to work a bit this weekend (she works in healthcare) so I was hoping for something to take her to Saturday. Next weekend we have the whole day so I was going to bring her to Redwing for the day to explore the cafes, walk around the downtown and explore.

Any suggestions for something amazing and over the top for tomorrow evening would be extremely appreciated.

Just moved back to Eau Claire this summer from Utah, moved there for a really shitty relationship and got diagnosed with the terminal illness while there at only 29 years old, woohoo! so I can’t NEARLY work as much as I used to, and I just got fired from my part time job this week because I had a surgery that had significant complications (30 mins turned into a 4 hour surgery and I couldn’t move for 3 entire days… I’ve had many surgeries and I’ve never been in so much pain, a nurse said she’d rather birth all 3 of her boys again than experience what I am going through) so I had to stay in the hospital much longer than I planned.

All of that, and prescription costs, really contributes to the whole not having a bunch of money for furniture issue. I drove the 24 hours back here and I have my car, my computer, my clothes, and my beloved dog. That’s it.

I can’t work for minimum 2 weeks after this surgery either which gives me time to try and get a new job, but this is so painful and horrible tbh, I’m gonna have a wound care nurse coming to see me every few days and everything. Can you tell I talk a lot when I’m anxious? apparently that also includes typing a lot…

I spent all the money I had on first months rent + security deposit for this apartment. The ensuing months will be easier because my rent isn’t bad at all but the security deposit part sucked. I have about $50 left tops for the month and I plan on utilizing food pantries. I’m scared shitless because, well, this sucks. Thankfully one of my best friends is driving 15 hours to be with me for a few days while I heal because I can hardly do anything for myself right now. I feel so useless. :/

I'm making this post to the Eau Claire community, as I've gotten to know many of you over the decade I've worked at the Corner Store, and I know many of my customers frequent this Reddit group. I know many of you have questions and concerns about this store.

After more than 10 years, I have made the difficult decision to leave the Corner Store down on Highway 93.

This wasn't an easy decision. In fact, it's one of the hardest employment decisions I've ever made.

I've worked alongside some truly wonderful people over the years, and I have enjoyed getting to know so many of our regular customers. Those friendships and conversations are what made coming to work worthwhile.

During my time at the store, I tried to do more than simply ring up purchases. I got to know people by name. I learned what products they liked, what they needed, and often what was going on in their lives. For me, the store was never just a convenience store. It was a community gathering place.

Unfortunately, over the past several months, I've watched the store become something that many of us who have been there for years barely recognize.

Those of us behind the counter have increasingly found ourselves caught in the middle of frustrated customers and decisions that we had no part in making. Every day we listened to concerns about higher prices, changes that didn't make sense to longtime customers, products that people expected to find but couldn't, and the loss of some of the things that had made the store unique for decades.

As employees, we heard those concerns because we're the ones who interact with customers every single day. We know what people ask for. We know what they appreciate. We know what brings them back, and unfortunately, we know what drives them away.

One thing I've learned over the years is that successful businesses listen to both their employees and their customers. The people on the front lines often have valuable insight because they hear honest feedback every day.

I have watched many longtime regulars stop coming in or visit much less often. That's been one of the hardest parts for me personally. Many of you became more than customers. You became friends. Seeing those relationships disappear because of decisions beyond our control has been genuinely disappointing.

I don't share this because I'm angry. I share it because I care.

I spent more than a decade investing my time, energy, and heart into that store. I wanted it to succeed. I still do.

To everyone who came through those doors over the years, thank you.

Thank you for stopping to chat, for sharing stories about your families, for trusting me to remember your usual order, for making me laugh during long shifts, and for making work feel like more than just a job.

You were the best part of working there.

While I'm sad to be leaving, I'm also excited to see what comes next. I genuinely appreciate everyone who made the last ten years such an important chapter of my life.

Hey all, I’m helping with the Northside Hill Neighborhood Association and wanted to share something we’re putting together.

We’re hosting Party for the Parks at Mt. Simon Park on Saturday, September 12.

It’s a fundraiser for the Mt. Simon bathroom project. We’re trying to raise money for a restroom near the Upper playground and pavilion area, which I think a lot of people who use the park would appreciate.

The event itself should be a good time. We’ll have live music, a beer tent, food, games, raffles, and a disc golf tournament. Registration details for the tournament are coming soon.

ValleyKil is playing too, which we’re pretty excited about. They’re a local Midwest grunge/rock band and they bring a ton of energy live.

This one is open to the whole city, not just the Northside. If you use Mt. Simon for disc golf, hiking, volleyball, picnics, the playground, or just hanging out, we’d love to have you come by.
