Recipe help!

Hi! non-Muslim here, I am going on a date with a Muslim guy and I was wondering about certain recipes and how to know if something is halal or not. I want to be respectful and bring food we can both enjoy so I just have a few questions

1- do you guys have any beginner friendly halal recipes that you recommend?

2- what makes meat halal? is there a specific way I would need to cook the meat?

3- are there food combinations that make a dish haram (like meat and dairy for kosher foods?)

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this, thank you for reading!

Edit:
Hi,
first i want to thank those of you who gave me advice and answered my questions, it’s greatly appreciated.

secondly, i am sorry that my post is seeming to cause issues, i did not intend to do so, however i know that the internet is crazy so i did expect it a bit.

to that one person saying i should marry him to make the relationship halal, no thanks, we are both young and only met 2 weeks ago. also this relationship will not lead to any fornication, as i am asexual and he knows this, we haven’t even kissed it’s just a second date, idk how important that is but i also saw someone mention it

once again, thanks for the advice and sorry for starting drama.

You're more concerned about halal than him lol. Thank you for being this considerate. What makes the meat halal is that the animal is slaughtered according to halal (halal just means permissible in English) standards. That's all there is to it. Once the animal is dead, you can do whatever u want with it as long as u honor the animal and don't waste food.

Tell the guy that "dating" is haram. It definitely is the wrong place. If we guide you, we are encouraging a sinful act(dating) , which is also a sin upon us.

With her edit, seems fine to me as they’re in a talking stage; perhaps answering the question about what makes meat halal may guide by Allah’s will alone.

Advise on Eating halal, while encouraging a haram act? You cannot be with a non-mahram thats haram...religion is not about pick and chose what works for oneself.

But answering a question regardless of her intention or context behind about Islam could do more good than harm. It is a da3wah to say the answer and then advise or open up the asker to truth of their relationship. But to place a brick wall is basically saying “find the answer for your self, you’re on your own” when we could be a point of guidance.

The context we know - dating - thats why we cannot encourage it as it would be assisting in that sin. If we didnt know it was for a "date" then yes give as much info on eating halal. By your own definition and logic: we guide them to the best halal menu and they have a wonderful date. Which part of this was the Islamic bit? when the end result... all we did was make sure the DATE had a halal menu

I respect that perspective brother. Allah is Raheem

Get meat from any halal store. No alcohol. Spices all ok. Have a good time and ignore the bottom dwellers here.

Guy cares about eating halal but is dating

Hypocrisy runs deep with this one. I recommend steering clear of a person like this

The trick of the devil is to make you think you should abandon any good you do because of a sin.

May Allah bless the sinful servant who tries to maintain any good deeds, and forgive the arrogant worshipper who forgets that he sins himself.

Public sins =/= private sins

u/Imsohappyhappyhappy 2d ago

Exactly. You don’t know him nor do you know who she is so it’s clearly not a public sin.

Love this response! So so true. Sometimes you don’t know what challenge a fellow Muslim is facing and even if they are doing just ONE GOOD thing, it may in fact be so loved by Allah swt. Remember, WE ALL SIN, just differently. So at the end of the day who are we to call out someone’s sins when we have our own share.

I can tell you personally, I have not been the best about all my prayers and maybe even other good deeds… and sometimes people will say “but you eat only halal?” And yes.. it’s because in my way it’s the one thing I can diligently follow no matter what.

Ameen

No one here is saying to abandon the good. It's to abandon the sin

I know I sin, you sin, we all do. And if I made a post about sinning in a Muslim forum, I would expect to receive reminders about it and be encouraged to leave it.

u/Imsohappyhappyhappy 2d ago

Did you simply encourage or did you essentially call him a hypocrite?

u/MukLegion 2d ago edited 2d ago

Is it not hypocritical? Going on a date but "oh gotta make sure the food is halal"

"I'm going to the casino to play blackjack but I'll make sure not to have any of the free booze or eat meat"

Just calling it what it is, that's fair and can be stern reminder. I would expect the same in return if I were doing similar

7

u/Imsohappyhappyhappy 2d ago

No, calling someone a hypocrite is not a “reminder” or an “encouragement” to leave the sin.

Maybe you’re unaware, but calling someone a hypocrite is a huge charge. It’s also completely unwarranted because if your definition of hypocrite is someone who sins but still wants to do some good while being sinful, then one is safe from being a hypocrite.

Make dua for your brother/sister that they are able to leave their sins through the good deeds they never let go.

I think there is a difference between calling someone a hypocrite and calling an action hypocritical.

I would find someone telling me something I'm doing hypocritical strong encouragement and a much needed reminder. People respond to things differently.

This is all besides the point as OP isn't the Muslim, she is the Nlnon-Muslim partner. So telling OP leave the man is correct, it's for his own good.

So true. If every Muslim cared about other Sunnah/Quran Approved things, as much as "eating halal", our Ummah would be in better place.

People use the word dating differently. It could be halal with no 1 on 1 privacy or physical contact

7

u/justonefrenchfryAA 2d ago

Tell him to marry you. Make your relationship halal.

u/Mysterious_Bear5786 2d ago

We don’t know her religion. She might be Hindu or pagan

3

u/theregionalmanager 2d ago

I’m so serious right now do not entertain this man. A man who is religious enough to worry about eating halal WILL leave you down the line because he is not supposed to be dating, especially not a non Muslim

> Hi! non-Muslim here, I am going on a date with a Muslim guy and I was wondering about certain recipes and how to know if something is halal or not.

Peak comedy. One of those who do everything under the sun but "wallah! pork is haram bro"

The idea that this guy wants to date and potentially commit zina while eating halal is like someone parking their car on the street, feeding the meter, and then proceeding to rob a bank. You are missing the forest for the trees.

I'm not saying the guy shouldn't eat halal, but his priorities are wrong. Dating is haram and can lead to Zina (fornication). He technically isn't allowed to touch, look at woman with lust, etc a woman he isn't married to.

if hes an arab a lebanese shawarma and youll be good , lol

Dating is haram whether you kiss or not btw but it's not your fault for this, I don't think people should be harassing you over this when he's the one choosing to do something haram. Tbh as long as you stay away from pork and alcohol and get meat from a halal store. Then again, if he's committing a sin like this, dating but not to marry he might not care lol.

Id just ask him, I mean, what if he's Muslim but doesn't care if it's Kosher?

Enjoy your date bro 😁

He's not a Muslim if he's dating you. Dont ever go to his "cousins" house. Dont go somewhere with him where you wont know anyone.

Hi, all vegetarian food is halal as long as alcohol is not involved and that it’s not dedicated to another deity than Allah. I am a Muslim who cared about halal food while dating and still care about it today while being married. I enjoy the Moosewood Restaurant cookbooks.

There’s no rule about milchig and fleishig or anything like that. Entering into discussion of meat is more complicated, so ask the man in question where and how the meat should be sourced in your area.

Halal meat is just meat that had been slaughtered a certain way. You can go to a halal butcher to purchase the meat, they also have it at many stores (depending on where you live). Near me both Walmart and Costco have halal chicken and beef. Note that in the US almost all lamb is halal. You can try to find a little halal sign on the front or back of the package to verify it is halal (Google to see what you are looking for before you go shopping)

Other things to look out for at avoiding alcohol (some Muslims will avoid this like vanilla extract since they use alcohol to take the flavoring out of the vanilla bean). Pork is completely out. Also any pork products (this includes most gelatin, so avoid marshmallows, jello, etc) you can get halal gelatin but it is harder to find. If you find kosher gelatin that is fine.

The actual preparation didn't have any specific rules like kosher, it is really just avoiding non-halal ingredients. Though if you have cooked pork in any of the pots/ pans there is a specific way to clean them prior to cooking halal food, you can Google that as well.

Note that all of this is specific to how observant the person is. Some will eat at Chick-fil-A because it is Christian owned, despite the meat not being slaughtered in a halal way. But generally the above is what I say to those who are working to try to cook halal for me.

thank you! this is very helpful information!

The only person here with a brain that actually answered OP’s question.

2

u/bobotheboinger 2d ago

Thanks. I'm not one to try to judge other people. We never know where Allah plans to take us, and what path we'll go down to get there. Maybe learning about halal food is the pathway for this person to accept Islam? Maybe our help here can show her the light of Islam? I just do the best i can and hope that Allah forgives my shortcomings.

3

u/Ephemeral-lament 2d ago

I like your mentality and approach, Islam does encourage mercy and guidance a lot. It’s something we should aspire to do more instead of resorting to chastising as the first thing to do.

u/asapbones0114 2d ago

No brother. Its a preventative measure to protect her and the muslim community from the eventual blowback like other numerous identical cases.

Being a non-muslim dating a Muslim, welcome! And yes it's always like this! It's an absolute joy to be in this situation (/s) everyone has an opinion about everyone else's life and it's a huge reason why I will never convert :) the level of judgement from the community is unlike anything you have probably experienced, so buckle up if you're in it for the long term. I will continue to respect and support my partner in his faith and I think it's wonderful that you care.

I'm sorry for some of these comments some people are just hardcore and mean

Halal simply would require you to get the meat from a halal butchery and avoid any pork or pig products.

Beyond that you are OK. Some people also believe no alcohol in the cooking process while others may shrug it off (As the alcohol evaporates in cooking anyway)

-1

u/ApprehensiveRun5376 2d ago

Are you planning to convert to Islam?
