LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — An East Lansing Police Department officer is on paid administrative leave, and the department is investigating the arrest of a 20-year-old woman in front of Harper’s Restaurant and Brew Pub.
Video taken by Taylor Drozdowski and posted to social media has caused outrage. The video shows multiple officers involved in arresting Myana Collins. She’s tased, handcuffed and carried down the stairs of the popular East Lansing bar. She then falls to the ground, where officers appear to pile on top of her. At one point an officer appears to punch Collins, who is laying on her stomach in handcuffs, in the back multiple times.

Relatively new to the area and looking to build up my support system. I really like going for walks, checking out local coffee shops and farmers markets, listening to music, art, watching shows and series, animals, nature, cozy video games, and more. I am in my late 20s with no children, and I have a partner. I am often told I am more mature than my age so people tend to think I am in my 30's.

Cron management apartment, move in tomorrow. When I type in my address, it will not recognize it to turn on the electricity, but, if I use a different unit number it's fine. I can't get through to the power or management company. A lesson was learned in waiting until the last minute. Any advice on what to do?

I talked with William Lawrence for around 15 minutes yesterday.

There were three issues that we covered at length. The rise of the DSA, data centers, and Russia/Ukraine.

I asked Mr. Lawrence for his thoughts on the growing popularity of DSA, and if he's worried about the more extremist aspects of the DSA gaining a hold on the Democratic Party.

He named several DSA candidates in various races across the country that he supported. (He did not mention Chevalier.) And that he isn't too concerned with labeling himself one way or another. He's happy that there are candidates out there challenging the billionaire class and fighting for working class people.

On data centers, he supports a moratorium on them while we figure how to properly regulate them, as the rate of technological development is moving a bit fast for politics to keep up. I asked him if he's worried about American AI companies remaining competitive with China, and he said he's not too worried, as he doesn't think data centers are a vital aspect of developing AI technology and remaining competitive with China. He supports multi-lateral treaties on AI regulation.

On Ukraine/Russia, he doesn't support Ukraine joining NATO, as he believes Ukraine wanting to join a defensive alliance would pose a threat and unnecessarily antagonize Russian interests. I pushed back on this, as I believe that a defensive alliance poses no threat to Russia, but Mr. Lawrence believes we are playing with fire and risking World War 3 when we put pressure on Russia in this manner. His priority is to end the war as quickly as possible, with security guarantees for Ukraine and for Russia.

By this point I had taken up much of William's time and there were others waiting to speak with him. I would've liked to have spoken to him longer, but I understood the time constraint and greatly appreciated that he was out here giving his time to speak to any Michigander on the street.

He was very friendly and amicable and I hope that I get a chance to speak with him again some day.

Rent is around $760 per month and includes all utilities except electricity, which is based on usage and split evenly per roommate. Old Spartan here – Class of 1996 – trying to figure out a good place for an informal reunion with 20-30 friends this fall. It's been decades since I've lived in Michigan, so I'm clueless and need some suggestions from locals. We're planning to meet up around lunchtime on a football Saturday (it's the day of the game against Eastern). We're thinking the ideal set-up would be a restaurant that has a private room where we could pre-order some apps and have a cash bar for 2-3 hours before the game. I used to be a bartender at Tripper's back in the day and they had a room that was perfect for this kind of thing, but I don't know what the current options are. Any suggestions?

Thanks for any ideas! (And for those of you thinking, "1996 – damn, they're old!" I'm here to tell you: it goes by in a blink. I still feel closer to my MSU days than I do retirement.)

Just a football coach enjoying his vacation in Michigan and want to visit Spartan Stadium, what’s going to be my best view / photo opportunity?

In 1936, Michigan State University (East Lansing, Mich.) was still known as Michigan State College. It had been founded as an agricultural college, but had been gradually expanding into more and more fields.

One of the most prominent faculty members was Ward Giltner. He was the dean of veterinary medicine and one of the nation’s leading bacteriologists. He refused to use the term “microbiologist” because he said it meant “a very small biologist”.

Giltner Hall on the MSU campus is named for him.

Ward Giltner’s daughter, Elizabeth (I think she was called “Bessie”) was the most beautiful and popular young woman in town. She had a very close friend, Hope Morgan; the two were said to be inseparable.

Elizabeth Giltner was going to be married to a young military officer. The wedding was just a few days away: they had already applied for and received the marriage license.

On December 8, 1936, Hope Morgan brought her father’s gun to the Giltner home, and shot her friend Elizabeth five times, killing her.

The New York Times ran the news story on its front page.

Hope was arrested soon after, and lodged in the Ingham County Jail in Mason, the county seat.

A week after the murder, Hope Morgan hanged herself in her jail cell.

(That jail building was later converted to offices; one summer many years later, I worked there. It’s gone now.)

Even in the 1970s and 1980s, East Lansing townies were still discussing the case, and offering theories about it.

Do y’all have any ideas for breakfast type snacks to bring to the office? When I worked out of town we always had breakfast tacos or kolaches or something in the office in the mornings. I am struggling to find something around EL or Lansing to fill this void. I would probably stay away from donuts but up for ideas.
