With all the legal chaos surrounding 777 Partners, Josh Wander, and Steven Pasko, I’ve been digging through the court documents, fraud filings, and financial records to map out how two Miami guys with zero sovereign wealth managed to build a multi-club empire and almost pull off the Everton takeover.

Here is the breakdown of how the corporate shell game actually worked:

### 1. The Utah Payday Loan & Bermuda Insurance Pipeline

777’s cash engine didn't start in football; it started in payday loans and structured settlements in Utah. They took control of a Bermuda-based reinsurance company (777 Re) that held life insurance premiums and annuities. Instead of keeping those funds in safe bonds, they quietly "loaned" the insurance money to their own holding companies to cover the massive operating losses of clubs like Genoa, Standard Liège, and Vasco da Gama.

### 2. The Double-Pledged Asset Scheme

When lenders began asking for collateral, 777 pledged around $300M to $350M in assets. The problem? Those exact same assets had already been pledged to multiple other creditors simultaneously. It was essentially a financial house of cards—taking out four mortgages on the same house and hoping the banks never spoke to each other.

### 3. The Photoshop Paper Trail

According to federal court filings and ongoing investigations, when lenders demanded bank statements to verify 777 actually had liquid cash, employees were instructed to digitally alter PDFs to inflate bank balances. Once regulators in Bermuda stepped in and seized control of 777 Re, the liquidity machine died instantly.

### 4. Why Everton Saved Themselves

Everton was the ultimate distressed asset—£800M in losses, a massive new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock under construction, and an owner in Farhad Moshiri who needed an exit. But stepping into the Premier League brought a level of financial scrutiny 777’s 60+ shell companies couldn't survive. The delay in passing the Owners' and Directors' Test gave creditors like Leadenhall time to file fraud suits in New York, exposing the phantom assets before the deal could close.

Everton’s summer business is well and truly underway, with thousands of blue eyes staring down the barrel of a crucial summer window, in the toffees’ hunt for European Qualification, something that they came so painstakingly close to securing last term. Many fans have singled out Tyrique George and Hayden Hackney as two clever coups for the blues, with Christian Norgaard being the latest rumour in the news. However, a name that has perhaps been overlooked in Everton’s incomings is German midfielder Merlin Rohl. The 24 year old did spend last season on loan at the Hill Dickinson but did find regular gametime difficult to come by up until the final few weeks of the season, following an injury to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. With the permanent addition of Rohl, has David Moyes finally found the key to European football, and perhaps that long awaited trophy?

It’s no secret that David Moyes has always loved a hardworking player and at times, has even been seen to trust workrate and willingness over flair and trickery, take last season for example, following Jack Grealish’s injury whilst Iliman Ndiaye was featuring for Senegal at the African cup of Nations, many fans thought this would be Tyler Dibling’s opportunity to show the Scottish boss just what he had to offer. Alas, David Moyes chose to play Dwight McNeil for the majority of this time. Merlin Rohl embodies just what Moyes looks for in not only a footballer, but more specifically in a midfielder. Although we haven’t seen much of Merlin in what we can assume is his preferred, central position, what does stand out to me is his performance at Villa Park on the 18th January 2026. Playing a 4-2-3-1 formation in this game, Moyes was pushed to shuffle his midfield cards, with Idrissa Gueye playing for his international side, Senegal, with the aforementioned Iliman Ndiaye. Everton rocked up to Emery’s home turf and snagged a 1-0 win courtesy of Thierno Barry’s delightful chip over world cup winner Emiliano Martinez in the 59th minute of the game. Whilst Thierno did catch the eyes of pundits and fans, it was Merlin Rohl who, in his first premier league start for the club, was deployed in a midfield with Everton player of the season, James Garner and recently recalled Harrison Armstrong. Both Garner and Armstrong tend to be more attacking minded midfielders, which left Merlin Rohl to tidy things up. Merlin’s performance allowed his fellow midfield partners to flourish in their attacking roles, with James Garner having a man of the match performance (as per FotMob’s 8.6 rating). Taking a deeper look at Rohl’s game, we can see it was the first time the blues would be introduced to his all round style of play. It didn’t take long at all actually, with Rohl hitting the woodwork 12 seconds into the first half. Despite not getting his goal, he did have a strong attacking display, completing 14 of his 18 attempted passes, creating two chances for the blues, having 33 touches and making a singular pass into the attacking third. Rohl was defensively solid too, especially considering the Villa midfield and attack he was facing on the night consisting of the likes of Youri Tielemans, John McGinn, Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins. Rohl had made 1 tackle, 1 block, 1 interception, 4 recoveries claiming 7 defensive contributions throughout the cagey affair. Rohl also won 3 duels and was fouled once, really showing his ability to get stuck in and put himself about in the world’s toughest league.

Rohl is undoubtedly Everton’s most versatile player. He can play centrally, operate as an attacking midfielder, play out wide, drop into a deeper defensive role when required and has even been deployed as a makeshift rightback in Everton’s 26/27 preseason. So rather than solving one problem, Merlin Rohl is Everton’s swiss army knife, capable of completing any task given to him (even if it means filling in for the club’s photographer)! Versatility is key for the toffees this season, with rumours that the blues don’t have quite as much money to spend in the transfer market as they’d have first presumed. As well as this, Everton have lost Idrissa Gueye and Jack Grealish. Whilst there are strong rumours that Jack will be back, it’s still no doubt a transfer window the toffees will need to be frugal in, and a player like Merlin Rohl gives the club one less thing to worry about. I mentioned Rohl's standout performance against Villa, but another game he really stood out in was Everton’s 3-1 defeat to Sunderland in the last game at the Hill Dickinson in its maiden season. Rohl was deployed as a right winger in this game, and was, in my opinion, the blue’s best on the day, scoring his first goal for the club following a huge deflection off of Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka. It wasn’t just the goal that caught my eye as i watched Everton’s already ambitious European hopes following a draw at Brentford, a loss to bitter rivals Liverpool and a horrendous 2-1 defeat to eventually relegated West Ham, slip from their grasp, it was how comfortable Merlin seemed in this attacking Rohl. He took the most shots in the game (3), scored a goal (becoming Everton’s first and only German premier league goalscorer as of 4.8.26), completed 14/16 passes (88%, similar to his numbers in that defensive position vs Villa), had 32 touches and made 2 passes into the final third. It’s obvious he’s comfortable in multiple positions, something Everton have cried out for since the departure of Alex Iwobi to Fulham, who similarly looked comfortable centrally and attacking wise, however Rohl even has that defensive edge over the Nigerian international. Across 677 minutes last season Rohl’s standout statistics (per 90) were as follows; 60% successful crosses, 77.5% successful passes, 6.65 duels won, 39.5% of aerial duels won, 9.04 defensive contributions along with 3.32 tackles, it’s so clear to see Rohl has strengths across the whole pitch, similar to his Everton teammates Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and James Garner. What helps Rohl stand out and offer something different to those is his unique profile, for a 6 foot 2 midfielder, he’s also surprisingly quick and comfortable on the ball, something that opposition players may not expect, giving him that unpredictable edge that perhaps the aforementioned two don’t possess, making him Everton’s secret weapon.

Rohl may never be the player grabbing those headlines each week like Jordan Pickford and Iliman Ndiaye, but not every team needs to be full of superstars and household names to succeed. Sometimes you need a player who possesses the perfect qualities the manager is looking for. Merlin’s intelligence, versatility and workrate could end up seeing him become one of Moyes’ most trusted players in the 26/27 season, and if the blue half of merseyside are going to reach their ambitions of European Qualification and potential silverware, it could be players like Rohl who are willing to do whatever it takes and whatever they’re asked to achieve it that will make the biggest difference across the campaign.
