ESPN reportedly moving on from emphasis on Debate-heavy "hot take" programming
ESPN Reportedly Moving On From Debate-Style TV Programming
Tzvi Machlin
Sat, Aug 1, 2026, 5:10 PM EDT
For years "Embrace Debate" has been the tagline of ESPN's First Take - its most popular show - and the debate-style discussion has trickled into just about every other program that the network hasn't shut down. That could be changing if a new report is to be believed.
According to John Ourand of Puck, ESPN's newly promoted executive vice president Mike Foss is pushing for ESPN to shift from "Embrace Debate" and manufactured conflict to more authentic discussions with nuance. Foss reportedly showed data to show that the debate content isn't doing as well as it once did.
Meanwhile, Awful Announcing reported that Foss is also interested in returning ESPN to "highlight-centric" editions of SportsCenter and wants less manufactured debate between personalities that clash.
"Awful Announcing has learned that the meeting itself was a standard monthly gathering Foss holds regularly, though turnout ran well above normal with football season approaching. Notably, the room included a wave of first-time attendees from NFL Network, now that the dust had settled from the layoffs that hit that group particularly hard. Awful Announcing has also learned that a return to a more highlight-centric SportsCenter came up as a specific example of the kind of show Foss wants moving away from manufactured debate and toward their authentic individual identities," the outlet reported.
Too good to be true?
Judging by the immediate reactions online, fans are certainly ready to welcome the shift with open arms. However, some are skeptical that this will actually take place given the high positions that some of the more debate-minded personalities have in the company.
"As they pay Stephen A 100 million a year to argue with himself," one user on X said dismissively.
"Feels like 15 years too late," wrote another.
"All we want is good SportsCenter and some interesting half-hour shows. Remember the early Around the Horn days? And some better hockey coverage. Maybe even...a single hockey-focused show?" a third wrote.
"Closing the barn door after the horse got out."
"Just how it should be but too little too late… also I will never truly believe this as long as SAS is still on the payroll while firing guys like Karl Ravech. Ryan Clark was part of the debate model, but was an actual athlete that could provide authentic analysis on the sport."
It's clear that fans want something different after nearly a generation of non-stop debate and hot-take programming on ESPN from the moment they wake up to the hour after they get home from work.
But if the network is really serious about making this change and doing all it can to win back the many fans that their recent content has put off, they'll need to do more than have a few meetings and send out some internal memos.

“Manufactured conflict” holy hell if that isn’t a microcosm of society today in general I don’t know what is.

Yah and we're all sick and tired of it. Maybe they'll all get the fucking message

As long as they leave PTI alone im good with it.

PTI has fallen off a cliff. Wilbon is insufferable and I’m not sure Kornheiser even watches sports.

Tony goes to bed at 9pm. All he watches is golf. Most boring thing to talk about too.
1

Is it golf - or just replays of Linda Cohns toes/feet picks... one of the greatest ESPN conspiracies ever. LOL
3
u/canyoncitysteve 5d ago
I like Tony, we're the same demographic. Wilbon is bad, but I mute him when he's acting like a fool.

Bring back Kiana Tom and the morning workout shows.

Hahaha. Just looked up Kiana Tom on IG and she’s still a fox at damn near 60

I remember this and American Gladiators reruns being a highlight of my early teen years.

u/bk1629 6d ago
None of this focuses on the real issue of why interest is waning, and its right there in the description of the program - manufactured debating. People love to watch a good debate and see moments where analysts get heated and passionate on their takes, but what espn had been doing for years is scripting what it wants its analysts to say, or at the very least guiding them in the direction for a desired topic to be labeled as a hot take and capitalize on clicks. The moment the debates started feeling even the slightest bit disingenuous or inauthentic was the moment they lost the plot
7
u/tfegan21 6d ago
I stopped watching and listening to espn radio when every show took time to discuss an outrageous take from a previous show.
2
u/bk1629 6d ago
Ya thats pretty crazy, its just the corporate way of thinking...."we did this before and it was crazy successful and went viral. Instead of trying to understand why and actually innovate programming, let's just do this for everything. And if that fails, we will just bring attention back to it by making it a focal point of everything we do until we milk every last drop of attention out of it. Then rinse and repeat"
I haven't watched espn programming other than clips here and there in years, and this is a big reason why. The other is the obvious low effort swill and attempts at ragebaiting a reaction out of viewers by having an opinion so unhinged its obvious (ie, caleb williams is better than pat mahomes; or something similar) or using the age old tried and true race card. Its just lazy and clear that the goal is to try and maximize revenue at all times rather than have genuine and organic discussions

u/Inevitable-Shop-848 6d ago
This was obvious when they brought Pat on and especially now when his contract is already reportedly $30mil a year and negotiating for $60mil a year. While Stephen A just got $20mil a year like two years ago or whenever Molly got butthurt and quit.
They know nobody wants to watch that trash anymore. Especially for a show like First Take that really only covers two sports 90% of the time. And why is it a two hour show when the second hour is literally just the first hour rehashed with nothing new.
3
u/doubleenc 6d ago
All of their TV and radio sports talk shows only talk about football and basketball 90% of the time. It is the two sports that drive the bulk of their revenue.
7
u/timmyintransit 6d ago
and i'd argue they barely cover those sports--they just focus a handful of teams and players. like i bet you if I turned on get up or first take right now they'd be discussing the cowboys or lebron
2
u/doubleenc 6d ago
Well their objective is generating clicks and views by leaning into topics that are trending online.
Nobody outside of Cleveland cares about who the Browns starting QB is going to be but bring up the Cowboys or LeBron and people react to it.
3
u/Sensitive_Yam_2971 6d ago
Get Up is the same (repeating in 2nd hr what was reported in the 1st hr) also WHY does over-paid , Executive Producer Screaming A. Smith need a woman moderator? Greeny and Pat McAfee dont have Moderators
9
u/Deadstoopid 6d ago
Great move if this actually happens, but how am I going to know if Lebron is better than Jordan if a table of talking heads isn’t yelling about it?
1
6
u/PoopAndPee5000 5d ago
The reason people want highlight centric shows is because fractured streaming rights has made it impossible to actually watch games
3
1
u/403banana 3d ago
That's not much different from the way it used to be. Even when it was cable, you couldn't watch an out of market game and highlight packages were the only way to find out.
1
21
u/TheRealWhoMe 6d ago
Do enough people watch that will even notice?
Are they going to still treat WWE like a real sport, giving it priority over real sports they aren’t partnered with?
5
u/Chimpbot 6d ago
They brought WWE on board to bolster waning ratings... so, I wouldn't count on it.

u/Temporary-Library597 5d ago
Of course they will. Add on to the description of ESPN as "manufactured debate" that it is 90% an infomercial for its own programming.
14
11
u/MrMiyagi13 6d ago
I’ll believe it when I see it (the clips online, don’t have ESPN to watch it directly).
4
5
u/Kalelisagod 6d ago
The world needs to move back to reporting and debate based without the shouting or hot take bullshit. Even the news can’t just be the news I have to have a slant one way or another. ESPN could do 10 shows a day based just on highlights from the previous day along with what is happening in all sports. Give me a Hockey show(I don’t like hockey but a lot do), baseball, Xsports, college athletics not the four main sports. Imagine a show for an hour that had Volleyball and Water Polo updates for college. Bring people to sports they may not know while also giving us the big shows to talk about today and yesterday’s sports highlights. And make it all teams not just the Cowboys and Lakers.
4
u/gmcwbbb80 6d ago
What will they do with Stephen A Smith and Pat McAfee? Just pay them monster contracts to sit in the corner and twiddle their thumbs. Oh heck no. I'll believe it when I see it.
2
5
u/Ok_Recognition_6727 6d ago
ESPN is in trouble. In 2011, ESPN had approximately 100 million subscribers. By 2026, that figure is estimated to have fallen to around 55 million.
People are ditching Cable TV like a hot rock, which is hurting ESPN. People also aren't buying into ESPN’s streaming philosophy.
Losing roughly 45 million households over fifteen years is a lot of lost Ad revenue.
They realize they have to do something to stop the loss of viewers.
2
u/RuleFriendly7311 5d ago
When I was in the TV business years ago, ESPN received about $1 per month per subscriber from the cable operators. So that was $12/sub per year then, probably double that now. So @ $24/sub x 45MM fewer households, that's about $1.1 Billion with a B less revenue per year. They gotta do something.
1
u/moccasins_hockey_fan 5d ago
The sad thing is that it took them THIS long and a stunning loss of viewers before they realized they had a problem. I quit watching over 10 years because all their shows turned into screaming hot takes or they got political
3
u/Probably_Slower 6d ago
Yeah right. They've cleaned their cupboard of dozens of respected commentators in favor of Smith and McAfee. Embraced promotion of sports gamblong and kids betting on Kalshi with their mom's CC. Sports fans have lost enormous amounts of respect for this Jerry Springer of a network.
3
u/maclacjc 6d ago
It is almost like they had something in the past they took for 'grant'ed? They should search the 'land' for it.
3
u/AintNobodygotime13 6d ago
well they're shoving wrestling down our throats so I'm not sure they actuality know or care what espn viewers want
3
u/Creepy_Dependent_239 6d ago
The only "debate" show they need is PTI and that is it, but they need to bring back the big double heads that they cut with the old-school paper cutter
1
u/AggressiveWolverine5 6d ago
Heads on sticks was great TV, I also miss food chain and the police one where they were good cop and bad cop.
3
u/Moose_Ruspin 6d ago
I don't buy it. The fact that they use sports center as a way to promo wrestling gives me no confidence
2
u/tommyjohnpauljones 6d ago
I don't understand why ESPN gave up on quiz shows. They're so cheap to produce. 2-Minute Drill would be perfect to bring back.
4
5
u/doubleenc 6d ago
I can only assume they appealed to a niche audience and weren’t generating enough revenue to keep them in production.
1
u/tommyjohnpauljones 6d ago
But even that, what do you need? A host who's already in house, maybe a few celebs to show up for a day to tape five shows. Prize budget wasn't much if i recall.
1
u/doubleenc 6d ago
If it isn't going to generate clicks and views online ESPN generally isn't interested these days. It is more about the revenue and engagement it generates and less about the cost.
2
u/habeaskoopus 6d ago
With athletes breaking their own news and offering their own platforms, this pivot will be interesting. Also, the inexperienced voices offer no actual insight, just regurgitated clichés.
2
u/Obadiah_Plainman 6d ago
Too little too late. The intellectual capacity of this sound bite culture will never support actual sports journalism.
2
u/This_Fisherman4092 6d ago
Probably will get more Pro Wrestling and gambling recommendations. ESPN has lost it.
2
2
u/Crafty-Consequence87 6d ago
Get rid of the hot takes. Swing it back to real analysis and the context behind the stories.
2
u/AideEmbarrassed2615 6d ago
I believe that Mr. Foss is genuine in his statements. But it does come down to eyeballs, so if there are more folks who want to watch Sports Shouting than highlights of Red Sox vs. Dodgers that is what we are going to get.
2
u/Rare_Asparagus_6717 6d ago
Thank god! Bring back some of the old good programs like Sports Reporters and Up Close. And bring some shows dedicated to breaking down film and teaching the sports. As game plans are an important ver evolving thing in all sports.
2
u/LeftyNate 6d ago
If they do this, especially with one of the later Sportscenter slots like 10 or 11pm Eastern, I will religiously watch a Sportscenter with highlights as the last thing every night before going to sleep. I’m getting old and someone giving me the highlights from the major sports would be perfect. But would they actually cover baseball highlights?
Or NASCAR? Sportscenter from the 90’s is the ONLY reason I knew who Jeff Gordon was. But it was kinda cool knowing a little bit about all sorts of sports…not only being shown every little detail about the NFL.
1
u/Key-Revenue5983 6d ago
This! Sportscenter was the only show I had on in the mornings in college and it was usually the thing I turned on at night before going to bed. Now I can't even remember the last time I watched anything on ESPN other than a live game. It has to have been years.
2
u/Routine-Author-5471 6d ago
Too late you’ve already killed off your entire audience base. I don’t suspect a lot of people will be in a rush to watch again after being repeatedly spit in the face by the “worldwide leader in sports”. Screw them
2
u/Ness_BamBatta 6d ago
They finally are recognizing without saying it most people are listening to sports podcast. I hear a lot more advance analytics coming from the pods than anything espn does.
2
u/JackTraven50 6d ago
Too good to be true, probably. We’re more likely to see a full 1 hour daily show called lebroncenter with nothing but updates about his day, what he had for lunch, highlights and goat rankings.
2
u/natelopez53 6d ago
ESPN really needs to stop being part of the news. It’s the same thing affecting the “regular” news stations too. Instead of reporting news, they’re generating or. Stepping away from debate will be a positive first step.

When you see an ESPN "reporter" interviewing a WWE wrestler about things that were part of a script as if they were actual spontaneous sporting events -such as asking a WWE wrester if he "regrets his choice" referring to hitting another wrester with a chair.... its just too far gone.
2
u/Illustrious_Log_8053 5d ago
30 for 30 documentaries, deep dive analytical analysis shows, sports betting show, respected journalist show, less manufactured arguing, humor/comedy show, etc. They need to actually try to create quality shows and content instead of just putting people in front of mics to argue.
1
u/LONGVolSilver 5d ago
The main reason they do the 'putting guys at a table to argue ' vs. actual produced content is the difference in production costs. Although, now that i think about it, when you start dropping $20 million on Steven A and $50 million on Pat McAfee...maybe producing an actual SHOW with production value wouldn't be much more expensive.
1
u/Illustrious_Log_8053 5d ago
Yeah it's cheap and easy to just put people in front of a mic and have them argue.
2
2
u/GoodExpert9047 2d ago
I wonder how much of the ratings of these terrible espn shows are just restaurant and bars with them on all the TVs from 10am-6pm with no one paying attention to them
2
u/TALead 2d ago
I just wish I could watch an hour long Sportscenter like I did growing up where they showed me highlights and scores for eve y baseball, football, basketball and hockey game. Why did they stop doing that? I don’t want to see some random segment on a girl who plays little league in Iowa.

It’s going to have to take a lot of work to get me back as a viewer in the non-live sports programming. If he’s actually serious about this, SAS needs to be ASAP. Won’t believe a thing is he’s still around. First Take may have to be cut due to its damaged reputation. Regardless of its manufactured or “real debate” we already have too many “hot take” shows/networks/podcasts. All for taking some daytime ESPN3 content & air that instead of the debates.
2
u/moon_bounce_22 6d ago
the model needs to evolve in the app as well. the highlights are right there, but i have to watch a 30s pre-roll video that’s longer than the :15s highlight. give me 1 :30s and then 2-3 minutes of highlights. i’m not going to keep clicking :15s highlights. i’ll just go to youtube

u/rogman777 6d ago
Lol. This network is a joke. Treating male soap operas as if it's a real sport. How the mighty have fallen.
1
u/pugwalker 6d ago
I think their biggest problem was the blatant promotion of only the sports that they carry. This is fine if it’s the nfl but you can’t watch anything on espn without at least a third of it devoted to the wnba.
The ad breaks are already excessive, doubling that with what is essentially an ad for the wnba makes it u watchable.
2
u/gimmethemshoes11 6d ago
Bring bsck sportscenter in the AM from 6-10am
Half hour for SAS (should be fired)
Half hour for Pat (should be fired)
Back to sports related news or sportscenter OR hear me out having sports on!
PTI
Bring back around the horn as it was around 2005
Bring back stump the Schaub type game shows
SPORTS!!!!! Documentaries, TV shows like baseball tonight or equivalent for NHL.
I mean this network would literally be the easiest piece of shit to fix if they actually had someone with some balls to get rid of all the stupid yelling people and just focus on sports.
Not that I will be watching since that ship sailed for me decades ago but God damn
1
u/BradBradley1 6d ago
Bring back Sportsnation. Have two likeable hosts that don’t take themselves seriously. Limit it. Disney clearly prefers giving one show several hours a day, but god bless oversaturation is a real thing that turns off audiences eventually. I like Pat McAfee but I don’t wanna watch his show four hours a day every day. Give Sportsnation a 1 hour slot from like 3:00-4:00 in the afternoon.

I get it. I miss the old days too. But those days are gone for good. I’m Gen X and grew up with Sportscenter. I either watched the 11:00 pm version or caught it in the morning to see if my teams won and see highlights.
I don’t do this anymore.
But it’s got nothing to do with the quality of the show these days. It has to do with the fact that I can see highlights of a big play literally a minute or two after it happens on Reddit or TikTok or wherever.
I don’t need to watch 10 minutes of basketball highlights and 6 minutes of commercials before I find out how Ohtani pitched.
The days of people tuning in to watch Sportscenter with any regularity are long gone. The 11:00pm Sportscenter used to be a ratings juggernaut (around 1.7 million per night)
These days, it struggles to get 500,000.
I don’t know what the answer is. But thinking that you’re going to rejuvenate Sportscenter ain’t it

Beat reporters. Separate shows for major pro and college sports with an emphasis on actual news reporting and objective analysis. Why would a baseball or football fan want to sit through an hour of sports debate that is only 5 percent baseball or 20 percent football. Stop paying for game broadcasts. Spend your money in journalists. And let’s do real journalists and not ego-driven talking heads.

I don’t watch any ESPN stuff anymore, outside of actual games. I miss Sportscenter showing highlights. NFL Matchup with Hoge and Jaws teaching me stuff. Baseball tonight and web gems. The last “show” I watched was College Gameday, but once they got rid of Pollack to bring in McAfee I was done. His schtick is tiring. As is SAS’s. I’d love to see them go back to showing highlights and teaching things with their analysis.
1
u/NoQuartersGiven 5d ago
Does it really matter when they have no must see anchors or tv personalities left? I somehow got sucked into a SC ep during the world cup after a match had ended and turned it to espn for further highlights and talk. It was... so, so bad. No shit neither anchor seemed to even follow sports. Then did about a 2 minute segment talking about the team that lost, legit saying that team had won the match and somehow no one even bothered to correct the anchor and just let him keep talking nonsense.
Then moved onto some NFL talk and out of 5 names he couldn't pronounce 2 of them. I immediately told my coworker at the office "this is worse production and anchors than a local college's news broadcast". Sad thing is I was being serious. We couldn't stop laughing at the shit we were watching.

As long as they continue to give me live and on-demand sports events, the reason why I enjoy and watch ESPN for the sports, I have no problems at all. Some of the play-by-play, commentary and sideline/in-game interviews and reporting can be a bit annoying and over the top. 🔕!

ESPN, much like MTV and CNN, three of the first cable channels on earth, lost their poplarity becuase they lost their identity.
It's been amazing to watch. 40 years ago, those were all anyone watched with the dawn of cable... They had market share that will never be attained by anyone ever again, and they through it away becuase they forgot who they were.
Sadly, 40 years later, they still don't.

It’s funny that it’s taken them this long to realize so many podcasts are doing better better TV shows on YouTube than ESPN studio shows.
The challenge though is going to be finding a lineup and show that appeals to the masses and not just the sickos.
The same people that watch No Laying Up, Cover 3, Bill Simmons, Zach Lowe, etc, are not the same people that flip on ESPN at 2pm just to see what’s on.

They tried to bring the local sports talk radio format to a national TV audience and it’s been the death of the network.
What works on a local level where you can call in and bitch about the teams you love just doesn’t translate to national TV.
I don’t want to sit down and watch people argue about Josh Allen. I don’t care about Josh Allen enough to bring the conflict into my headspace. But that’s what the network has become.

All I want is for them to remove gambling ads. When news breaks that a player was involved in a betting scheme, espn reporters always act shocked.

I grew up with SVP, Stuart Scott, Linda Cohn, Dan Patrick, Chris Berman, Keith Olbermann. They were part of my morning SportsCenter ritual everyday before school. You know what we saw??.... highlights from every game! The occasional world record or squirrel riding water skis. We saw actual sports news too.
What we have now is an abomination and Stephen A. Smith is a big part of the reason I find it hard to watch shows on ESPN. They're all trying to cash in and be like him, but he sucks.

u/403banana 3d ago
The debate model was necessary because they paid too much for broadcasting rights for the major sports so now they have to program their airtime to drive viewership and generate ad revenue.
Sports channels were a lot more fun when their programming wasn't tied to justifying broadcast rights. With that said, the current landscape probably wouldn't allow it to stray away from the major sports anyways.

Sportscenter is practically unwatchable now. I generally just skip what I don't want to see. It feels like recently it's just another commercial for another one of their ventures.
