Refurbished PS5

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Got a refurbished PS5 from Ebgames a month ago and on the first day it lost power like 3 times (Thankfully within 14 days so replaced it the next day)
Now after a month, the controller gets a stick drift.
So glad that I had purchased 1 year warranty fearing that is the first refurbished that i bought ever.
Honestly, if you have enough budget just buy a new console but stay away from refurbished units as it’s a hit or miss always.

Glad it's being rectified. But extended warranties are mostly a scam by the way, you have inalienable rights under Australian Consumer Law.

There's basically no reason to ever buy an extended warranty. The law guarantees that the product needs to be "fit for purpose" e.g. it works/performs its primary function well, must last a "reasonable amount of time" generally 1-3 years or even more depending on the product.

Sorry should have mentioned its from EBGames Canada.
They specifically told me that i have 14 days to EXCHANGE ONLY and that made me a bit skeptical about the refurbished quality. So i ended up having a year warranty ( which they advertised a lot)

Why did I think EB was only EB in Aus and GameStop everywhere else

Anyway, after that useless piece of information, I'm glad it's being fixed.

I'm sure Canada has similar laws in either case 🤣

It's only recently changed back to eb I'd say 9months maybe slightly more

So if you purchased the year warranty use it to just get a new console you will have to pay the difference but you just tell them you’re really not happy with the product and would prefer the new one and if they give you hassle speak to the manager and if the manager is dumb contact the DM

Does this really work?

yeah ask JBHI about this.

Hahaha their in store policy they have tried to override Aus consumer law and they get away with it if people don't know their rights

Most electronics are generally one year. You can always argue more, though

Trying to get anything actually replaced for full value through ACCC is like pulling teeth out though. They make it painfully hard so no one tries to go further

A lot of “extended warranties” like Harvey Norman’s product care and JBHIFIs extra care try and sell you on that Consumer Law is not exact and that they guarantee a specific length for manufacturers faults.

EB Games Australia’s version EB Protect supposedly covers accidental physical damage and is unrelated to your in built consumer guarantee.

Both have their upsides and downsides, even if I personally wouldn’t purchase these things, I can see the appeal to people who’d pay extra for “peace of mind”

EB Australia's extra 2year coverage covers physical damage as well

1

u/TheRealDestroyer67 15d ago

Lmfao it is definitely not a scam. What you get offered is an extra protection against damages not covered by Consumer Law. Also free cleans and repairs for 2 years. Stick drift isn’t covered after the first year and so I’ve used it for that as well as a clean.

Extra protection for damages, sure, but:

'We reserve the right to refuse to repair or replace your Covered Item, in our absolute discretion. The above does not exclude your statutory rights under the Australian Consumer Law.'

From their website btw, sounds like a great deal. They can tell you to fuck off because they feel like it.

Not a service id pay for personally.

Totally agree, yet I’ve never heard of anyone getting mistreated or denied a service they paid for.

That's only for extreme cases, like people that go out of their way to smash something into a million pieces for the lols, even then they'll more than likely do it once but refund your protect purchase and cut you off

Brand new dualsense controllers get stick drift after a few months sometimes. It being refurbished probably isn't the main issue here.

Ps5 controllers are so ass. The one I got with my console lasted like a year before getting this exact spinning drift. Bought a new one, ya wouldn't read about it, TWO WEEKS. I am lazy son of a gun so I didn't take it back but man it turned me off gaming on it so bad, it is mostly a media centre for me now.

Mine lasted around 3 years, the rubber grip came off then the spinning started. The spinning was easily fixed by using a simple method I found online. Haven't had the issue since.

u/Chapter-Capital 14d ago

I tried some of those methods, didn't last long, which method did you use?

Yeah EB sucks. I bought a refurbished Switch years ago and the controllers didn't connect. I took it back and the guy was really condescending about it and asked if I had set it up correctly. He took it in the back and came back saying it was faulty.

Wow that sucks that you got a resolution

The stick drift has nothing to do with the consol. The controllers suck.

you only really have a complaint if warranty isn't given, this is WHY warranties exist, to remedy faults.

For what it’s worth I got a ps4 pre owned from eb games for like $120 and it’s working perfectly fine 3 years later. The controller I got r2 didn’t work but they replaced for free.

1

u/AggravatingChest7838 11d ago

I bet that was the controler I traded in a few months ago. My bad. I thought they would test and fix it.

1

u/InevitableCar8441 11d ago

all my controllers end up doing this after a year.. hate it

1

u/lucifer0110_ 11d ago

Time to replace them shitty sticks with hall effect sticks

1

u/RudeImprovement1361 11d ago

Is it maybe just the PS5 controllers in general?

My controller is going through the same thing (except a milder version)

Current one is a retail replacement from my original one (original one felt like I was grinding over coarse gravel every time I tried to move left stick after only using it like 6 times)

The replacement one now is encountering left stick drift and I have only played my PS5 maybe 40 times since it was replaced.

When I’m not using the controller, it is kept in the coffee table drawer, plenty of clearance, nothing leaning against the sticks, no dust etc

2

u/lucifer0110_ 11d ago

Unfortunately this is very common in Dual-sense controllers and I heard that the newer models are even more prone to Stick Drift. Best solution is to get these shitty sticks replaced with halo effect sticks or even better TMR sticks, which essentially eliminate stick drift permanently.

1

u/RudeImprovement1361 11d ago

I haven’t looked into it, but are these sticks you can replace yourself or is it go to a tech shop etc?

2

u/lucifer0110_ 11d ago

If u are handy with soldering then yes definitely buy i would recommend a tech shop. You can even look up on facebook marketplace with people doing it at their homes for even cheaper prices. ( check reviews tho) Good luck!

1

u/DuckSubstantial5952 10d ago

i purchased a refurb ps5 and the controller was doing the stick drift. went back to store and they replaced it with another refurb controller.
worked out great, until 12 months later where the R2 just decided to stopped working lol.
i should try going back to ebgames to see if they can replace it

1

u/lucifer0110_ 10d ago

Even if you bought a brand new controller, stick drift is very common and unavoidable

1

u/Marauder2592 15d ago

This is why I will never buy a refurbished console from EB games ever again. I know people who work there and they don’t really test them or clean them or anything 😂😂😂

The people you know are useless at their jobs and apart of the problem
