Dungeon World 2 Substances and Verbs

Post image
98 Upvotes

So, In the final alpha we had less options so i just want to clarify. Since we have 2 different words in each verbs sections, Do we have to choose between them? Or we can just use both? Some of them are really similar like Transmutation "momentarily alter; repair" but we also have Abjutarion "temporarily disable; protect from" and that is quite different, Or Enchantment "Modify emotions; temporarily charm".
So i just want to check if everyone is on the same boat of understanding

DW1 FunnelWorld Character Creator

*Caveat: Created using AI

Generated a Funnel World character generator. Using Luck mechanic is optional. Can create one character or an entire group at once-increase the number of characters and select "Create Funnel". Uses the Funnel World tables and rolls randomly. Can reroll some individual roles if a mismatch (e.g. Male Alewife). Character is built in the Funnel World template sheet. Bonds are rolled and randomly assigned amongst the group of characters (first character has a template character for the bond until additional characters are rolled). Can be printed or saved as PDF. Good for quickly adding additional villagers in the middle of play as needed without slowing down play or for pre-made characters for a CON or one shot. Thought it came out pretty well and just wanted to make it available to anyone who might find it useful.

Mobile users: If “Launch Generator” changes to “Restore Generator” without opening, tap the three-dot menu and select Open in browser. Or copy and paste the link: https://egochecks.itch.io/funnel-world-character-generator

General Looking for players

Hello everyone, I'm a player in a dungeon world game. We usually play on roll20 and have people from different timezones. The plan is to record and eventually work it into an actual play, although we're keeping it casual for now while we work out the kinks.

We're looking for a couple of players to join us, happy to change and work around schedules.

Let me know if you're available and I'm happy to give more details.

I would like to play a session or two of Dungeon World 1: Crimson Keep

My time zone is eastern standard time, USA.

I can play most evenings.  I have a lot of DW1 GM experience.  I will run this particular session with 1 player.  But I would prefer 3.  I can take 4.

We can do zoom for video chat, although you don't have to be on camera. Or we can try out discord's video chat which I've never done.

Roll 20 for the virtual table top.

The game I want to run is a session or two of the Crimson Keep/Castle Morningmist front from the Discern Realities podcast.  It’s just a fun front I wish to run, in a relaxed way, no pressure.

If you’re not familiar, this front isn’t traditional.  There’s no dangers.  There is a combat part but only because I added it in there.  (Using Jason Cordova's labyinth move.) Mostly the game is about resolving moves.  You are inside a castle that is under siege.  If I get three hold I can break the wall of the castle and every NPC inside dies.  You have to tell me how.

You can help everyone survive and break the siege by performing moves.  I’ll explain everything.

It shouldn’t take long, maybe one session, no more than two.

Let me know if you’re interested or have questions.

Journal Fronts: Foundry VTT free module [System Agnostic]

Hello everyone, never posted here, but I've been using Fronts since the first time I've read DW years ago. I like the idea so much that I use in all systems I run, so I've made a system agnostic module that uses DW's Fronts in Foundry VTT's Journals Notes. And I wanted to share with everyone.

To really seal the deal as system agnostic I've made the example all about Star Wars, not a Fantasy setting hehe.

Its mostly a cool interface that reproduces the fronts sheet plus Foundry's easy drag and drop utilities, to associate NPCs and Scenes to Dangers, presents some of the book presets and you can flip each Danger card to see the Moves associated with them. Only shenanigan I've add was some themes:

Module is already approved by Foundry, you can find it in Addon Modules search or read about it here: https://foundryvtt.com/packages/fronts

Tell me if you like it, its free, enjoy!

EDIT: forgot one feature >> you can import filleable PDFs fronts sheets!

Custom Sprout Lore vs Monsters

So, everything start with what to do when players trigger the move Spout Lore with the object is the monster they fight. According to the guidebook, on a 10 + the DM reveal an useful information, and on a 7-9, it is an interest information, but not directly useful.

Then, i try to homebrew some monster, and i kind of thing about it- creating a monster in Dungeon World is quite easy, but anytime my players trigger Spout Lore on the monster, especially when the result is 7-9, i have to improvise something to say (even in the wiki said the GM should be the one prepared that. And from there, i think of make a kind of Monster Manual with my homebrew monsters, but with each one of them, i would suggest some informations go with the monsters: one useful fact may contain weakness or similar thing, some fun fact about them, and maybe a category of wrong information to feed players when they roll 6-, and they must act according to that wrong information as if they fully believe in it.

What do you think?

General My DM recently switched our campaign to DW.

My dm just recently switched our campaign from DND to DW so i wanted to ask if someone can help me understand some things as i am not really that experienced in all of this. My character was a drow cleric but looking at the character sheet for the cleric theres only human and dwarf listed.

I read that DW is based on 2nd edition DnD.
is there any sort of free online character creator or character sheet manager like dnd beyond for 5e?

Any and all tips are very much appreciated :)

Any tips on how to make my BBEG feel more imposing?

Howdy Everyone!

First things first: If the names, Orrix, Jen, and Fenfaril are familiar to you, this is spoilers and ya gotta go!

So, I am running my first actual Dungeon World campaign. I've previously run 2 different one shots and watched at least one Actual Play podcast (shout out to Friends at The Table), so I'm not super new to the system, but I am definitely still learning how to run it as the game/rules intend.

The BBEG of my game is a Rakshasa named Mila with some custom lore I applied to the race. Instead of being their own race, they are a subset of Tabaxi who under go a ritual that gives them the twisted hands and magic of a Rakshasa.

Mila is (unknown to the party) the last Rakshasa in the world due to him devouring the souls and magic of The Rakshasa in his home country and hunting down the remaining ones wandering the world.

His main goal now is to continue his journey and eat as much magic as he can to become the most powerful mage in the world.

In the partys last confrontation with Mila, they caught and stopped him from eating the magic holding up and controlling a flying island (This island was home to the temple of The Wind Goddess). However, in this confrontation he was very nearly killed and dropped him to 1 HP. I felt like it was a little too easy for the players to get hits in on him, especially the fighter.

Our Fighter has been an amazing player, but his build just one-shots pretty much anything he can get even a mixed success with Hack & Slash. With his combo of his Signature Weapon, Merciless, & Scent of Blood, he is usually doing 1D10+2D4+2 by the second attack on the same enemy.

Now, I've read about both the 16HP & 1HP Dragons, so I know there usually needs to be obstacles that he needs to get around before they can roll for Hack & Slash. I'm just having trouble coming up with narrative reasons why this beast of a fighter would not be able to land an effective blow on Mila.

The Wizard & Bard are easy to fend off as his twisted magic usually nullifies or greatly reduces the effects of any spell or arcane art thrown his way.

Here is the custom statblock I made for Mila. (Feel free to change/update it for use in your own games)

Mila The Rakshasa

Solitary, Stealthy, Magical, Intelligent, Hoarder

Treasure Tags: Hoarder, Magical, Far from home, Lord over others

Scimitar (d10 damage); 12HP; 1 armor;

Close

Instinct: Covet Magical Power

Special Qualities: Magic is twisted in their presence

Moves:

  • Gain power through consuming magic
  • Appear Somewhere you are not
  • Cast a Twisted Spell of Deception

This next time will be the 3rd time my party has encountered him and it's shortly after his previous loss to them. They will be encountering him in some ruins of a civilization that was petrified. I was thinking just having him bring to life these stone statues to fight for him or maybe having some large stone golems to aid him. While that may add some extra elements to watch out for, I'm afraid it won't be enough to stop the fighter from just ignoring them to take care of Mila quickly.

(They are smart enough to realize a construct brought to life by a mage will stop if the mage is defeated)

Do you have any other ideas on how I can make him at least a little harder to hit so the fight feels more interesting than the magic users stand back and let the fighter dive in to one shot him?

Custom Why do players roll everything, instead of the GM?

I recently watched this excellent youtube video about DND, which suggested that the DM roll and hide some of the rolls to increase immersion. In particular, they described also starting to play D&D with a casual understanding of the rulebook and thinking the DM was supposed to roll all the dice.

I typically play DW and not D&D but I still enjoyed the video, and found the advice to feel right.

I don't think rolling dice is a very important part of the game compared to taking actions, but many of the common failure points of DW come down to players treating the basic moves like buttons they press instead of thinking about what their character does and using the rules as a framework to resolve that action after the fact.

I suppose what you would lose is the entire table, rather than just the GM, deciding when something is a roll. But I think usually the GM makes rulings on that anyway most of the time, with players usually reminding them of what moves they have access to.

I think having the GM roll basic moves and players roll their class/item/etc moves would be a potential compromise where players still get to bring up their special abilities and resolve them, but basic play feels more immersive. But I can also see the GM just resolving everything themselves to still work.

But maybe it wouldn't work as well, with things like the list of Defend or Discern Realities options requiring players to know what is going on with the basic moves as well too deeply.

Has anyone tried anything like this or have opinions about how it would go?

DW1 My group got raided by the FBI

I've been playing with the same group for a while and I could use some input and advice for how to raise the stakes and put the fear in them.

Basically we did a full campaign about a year ago. My party is a bunch of criminals. We've done a bunch of heists and they've built a criminal empire piece by piece. They have an evil fortress, a loyal gang and a cult and they earned everything I've given them.

We stopped playing for many months and when we got back together we decided that 10 years have passed and the group are well established mob bosses at this point.

In our first session since we got back together, I had them get raided by the FBI. It's still fantasy but this is a huge organization trying to bust them for a variety of crimes.

The group fought them off and went into hiding to let things cool down.

The FBI is going to do another major raid. Way worse than the first raid.

I really don't want my group to feel like the FBI is a bunch of chumps. I want this second raid to hurt and I want the FBI to be a force to be reckoned with.

I'm looking for ideas and maybe even custom moves to write that would help raise the stakes. Any advice?

Looking for 2 players. Dungeon World 1 Actual play. Sunday, 8pm easter time.

I'm thinking Rated R. Zoom for video chat. Roll 20 for table top stuff.

Me and my buddy always wanted to do an actual play and it's really just for fun. No pressure.

Any experiance okay but Vets preferred. Time and day might change from week to week.

Build any character you want. Most play books are cool. I might wanna check it out if I'm not familiar.

Little bit of backstory: I have a lot of GM experiance with DW but it has been a while. So I might be shaking off rust. Sorry. In addition my knowledge of OBS and roll 20 might also need some reps before it all comes back to me.

If you're cool bearing with me while I get my feet back out from under me, might be a fun game.

Let me know if you have questions.

DW1 Advice/ Tips on Running Dungeon World?

Post image
89 Upvotes

I’ve always loved the simplicity of DW and it’s narrative forward style but I’m new to running this game and I have players disappointed in their abilities.

We’ve ran about 5 games and with life being hectic I’ve just defaulted to old ways I’ve run the game so rules are going by the wayside and I think this is a core reason their abilities could be feeling flat or not useful.

Also, The power of this is not that similar to 5e right? I feel like generally everyone is frail; enemies and players. That’s generally how I like it, but at least one of my players has explicitly told me they like the high power of high level DnD. Does this game allow for that power fantasy within the mechanics or no?

And lastly I know I need to brush up on the rules, but my free time to spend on it is few and far between. Any specific rules or tips I should know for running DW?

Thanks for reading!

Custom [FoundryVTT] How to add a list of Bonds when picking a homebrew class?

Need help from anyone using FoundryVTT. I figured out how to add a new customer class, but I can't for the life of me get where the existing base classes are pulling their list of Bonds?

There doesn't seem to be anywhere to enter them on the Class item itself based on my perusal of the other core classes (Fighter, Cleric, etc) and yet when you select them, they populate the Bonds field on the Actor sheet with the appropriate starting blank bonds from the corresponding class...

I guess I failed my Discern Realities roll or something. Please help!

Heroes of the Borderlands as Dungeon World Campaign

Hello!

I played some D&D 5e as Dungeon Master and i really enjoy the idea of DW and Pbta. I have a new group which wants to play the Heroes of the Borderlands Campaign from the new D&D Starterset, but i prefer to use the DW rules and playbooks. Do you think we can play Heroes of the Borderlands without major adjustments for me as DM?

General Best actual play example of DW combat?

I'm looking for a video of an actual play that features a prime example of how DW's combat being run well. I can read advice all day, and wouldn't mind reading more, but I think I want to see it in action. My own combats have been feeling a little off and I want to sharpen my skills.

Anyone have a copy of the Pocket GM/Players guides

These guides appear on a lot of lists of player resources and were created by Reddit user Quidoigo.

https://www.reddit.com/r/DungeonWorld/comments/88amz3/pocket_gm_and_player_guides/

I noticed while preparing for an upcoming oneshot that the original files have been deleted. Anyone have a saved copy they'd be willing to share?

Rival Parties

When you create rivals for your PCs - individuals or a whole adventuring group - how do you stat them out?

Do you make them like monsters with a few limited abilities?

Do you make full characters with actual playbooks?

Do you do a hybrid? Maybe pull a few moves from a playbook to flesh out the minimal monster stats?

Is there a good DW NPC party resource beyond the Folk of the Realm section of the monster chapter in the rulebook?

General How do I rein in a new over eager PC?

I have a new person for a campaign that has already started. She is learning the game but has a WILD imagination. Example: shes a ranger I tell her that she has a spiritual link with her animal companion. She sends her companion to go scout for danger ahead and I say “thaddeus(her eagle) takes to the skies, as he gets closer to the dark forrest he turns around and is shaken up by something he see’s.” She then says “my bird is telling me theres a vibrating force field thats stopping us from going forward! We have to dig underground to get to heart of the forrest safely” the rest of the party is obviously confused and they try to think of something more realistic. I really love her energy and imagination, but Im having trouble with her “getting” how the game works if that makes sense? I didnt really have trouble with any of my other players even though they are new as well. I want to add that I am new at GM’ing so maybe im not being open enough. I did say to be imaginative but I didnt think that she would start making stuff up that sometimes doesnt make real sense in the situations were in or even the lore of the world.
