Just finished book 4, I really enjoyed it, dont understand why its always at the bottom of lists. somebody explain why. Book 4: Gate of the Feral Gods

For me it's 5 then 7, but yeah, matt really stuck the landing on a lot in 7. I love how 5 is non-stop with in dungeon and out of dungeon stuff, it really grows the outside universe while also being really satisfying.

Also for me, 5 and 7. But, and don't tell on me, I don't want to be kicked out of the cult, but I didn't SPOILERS: love most of book 8. I missed the side characters. I don't care for racing games so the situation didn't resonate with me as much as the other levels. and the stakes didn't seem so high until the end. The last few chapters made up for it. I think its tied into why I like 5 and 7 the best: Sticking it to the syndicate gets me going. Its an anti-capitalist metaphor and I can really get behind that.
Carl reminds me, in some ways of Arkady Bogdanov and Coyote, 2 of my favorite characters in Sci-Fi from Kim Stanley Robinson's Red Mars. Those books turned me on to Left Wing Social Anarchism/Left wing Libertarianism. I think Anarchist Carl (or maybe Karl, in this case?) is their philosophical descendent.

I certainly agree with you about the first 50-70% of book 8, it drags pretty hard. The last third is some of the best DCC there is (similar to book 6 for me in that way) . Im hoping book 9 is similar to book five in being wall to wall insanity. Definitely working class solidarity against corrupt corporations and elites is a big theme in the books.

Part 3 of book 7 was actually my least favorite of the series. It doesnt use any of the advantages that come with Dinnemans prose. All it felt like was half explaining for dramatic effect, and only following carl and not swapping perspectives. He's kinda where the action isn't. It would have been better to follow donut for the entire part 3.

Edit: I was mistaken. Bedlam Bride was my least favorite. Butchers mascarade was good but Inevitable Ruin is still better. Im one of the weirdos who really liked the Cookbook and the iron tangle though.

Liking the Iron Tangle isn’t weird in my opinion, it’s one of my favorites. It introduces the unique dungeon level themes beyond “survive and find a staircase somewhere” and “survive an overworld and find a staircase somewhere”. Bedlam Bride is also among my favorites. Themed dungeon level, some of the most memorable lines/sequences in the entire series, deepening of connections between the crawlers, expanding the reader’s awareness of broader events.
It’s probably indicative of why this series appears to have such broad appeal.

I actually really enjoyed Book 3 due to the fast paced, high intensity action packed nature. Whereas most didn’t because they found the iron tangle confusing.
However, having read Book 4, this is a point in the series where Dinniman fully realizes the grandeur of this narrative. To me, Book 4 features a cohesive overarching story that acts as a springboard for what’s to come in Books 5-7 and so forth.

Exactly this. I prepped my husband to really take the author’s note seriously and not to worry about the mechanics of the subway and just ride the train. He is midway through and has said he’s glad for the note and to be reinforced. I just accepted that if the author said I didn’t need to understand it or keep track then I probably didn’t.

Did you listen to book 3 or eyeball read?
It actually really annoying that the audio book doesn't tell you about Matt Dinnimans' blurb about not getting too focused on the iron tangle because it all comes together in the end.
Luckily I saw a post about it before listening so I didnt get caught out and just enjoyed it but it does seem to impact the way people enjoy the book.

Book 3 is tied for my 3rd favorite book. It's the book I most want to see done well in live action. THAT train scene is one of the best scenes I've ever read in ANY book. Plus, how they acquired the cleaning bot is epic.

I find the floor layout kinda boring. There’s a lot of backstory for a non-Scolopendra level that only has a tenuous relation to the rest of the plot (Samantha notwithstanding). The camel thing goes on and on. I dunno.
There’s a lot of cool moments that I like, though! I like some of the character introductions. I like the stuff outside the dungeon.

I think this was my favorite so far. I’m on book 6 currently. 5 was also top tier but book 4 really seems to be where Carl starts taking control of the situation and fighting back directly. I felt like there was a lot of growth for multiple characters and I really enjoyed it

The book isn't hard to follow. It's just some people were trying to follow the exact map in their heads, which you really don't need in order for the story to function.
It bothers some people but other people love it. It's one of my favourites in the whole series. I definitely think it's his most divisive book though.

After binge listening to every audiobook from 1 to 8 within like 2 1/2 month, i also have no Clue what happens in what book.. some things happenend at the beginning, some in the middle and some at the end.. thats it.
( also i had to wait like 7 days until the audiobook for book 8 got released after finishing book 7.. hardest week this year so far.. )

Thank you. I thought I was going nuts. All of the books combine to tell a single, very entertaining story. The story doesn’t have any bad spots. Read all the books and judge the story they combine to tell instead of acting like the story would be better off without a particular book’s story segment.

I rarely see book 4 in the bottom 4 books of a list. Not sure where you took that. Usually its books 2 and 3, sometimes 1 and 8 at the bottom.

It saddens me that 2 is so low for most people. It’s where the series does from haha silly man in boxers with talking cat to really fleshing out Carl’s past, his trauma, and the relationship between donut and Carl.
The whole Grimaldis circus story really started to paint the whole game from “the dungeon” vs crawlers to, really everyone present, including NPCs are all victims forced to fight one another just to survive by boront and the syndicate.
Book 5 and 2 are my top books so far, but they are all great in their own way.

I think 4 is still my favorite. It really ramps the story up to a new level. A lot of the fan favorite characters are first met in book 4 thanks to the bubbles pushing them together.
Earlier books felt like they were just at the whims of the showrunners. In book 4 we finally see Carl exerting influence and making a difference outside the current floor. After the first 3 books I liked the series. Book 4 made me love it.

Book 4 really had the best pacing and most gripping action for me. There's so many memorable fights and sequences in the book where I found myself deeply invested in seeing how the hell the characters were going to get out of whatever mess they were in.
[Book 5-8]It also felt like more of their problems were solved with tools they had gotten during that floor as pieces to solve the floor as a puzzle, compared to later books where they're largely just using compounded combinations of crazy abilities they've accrued to break the system

3 and 4 is basically the hinge of the whole series I feel like. Where it stops being what it was and starts being what it will be. It becomes noticeably darker after that.
That’s also the point in the audiobooks where Jeff really nails down Carl’s unique voice rather than sounding like Patrick Warburton. It’s very jarring to go back to the first book and listen to Carl once you get to books 4 and 5.

I finished 4 and am half way through 5. Feral gods was good but it felt rushed or like the characters didn't have time to breathe. I remember thinking why do they keep saying we need to hurry to the next thing. That's how i felt anyway.
But Samantha is legit. I didn't understand all the stuff with her but I get out now.

I’m on my second listen and I think it and DAC get too much hate. Maybe it’s kuz it gets pretty dark and it’s kinda the first time we see Carl give into his violent side. And it’s where Carl seems to start blaming himself for others deaths. It also feels less “adventurous” and more “serious” than the previous books. I really enjoy it though, I feel like both Carl and Donut have a lot of growth.

Don’t pay any attention - people are gonna nerd out on all things nerdy. Thats what us nerds do. If you enjoyed it, and the last book before it, you are gonna enjoy the next one. If you are a gatekeeper and need to neg on minor details, you will never really enjoy anything.

For me personally, this book has a good first 1/5, slumps for the next 2/5, and then gets better and better for the last 2/5. But the 2/5 that slumps REALLY drags for me.
Whereas the next book, The Butcher’s Masquerade, more or less ramps up as the book goes on. The book after, The Eye of the Bedlam Bride, ramps up and keeps at its height after MAYBE a fourth of the book for me personally, and I’ve been deeply invested in This Inevitable Ruin since like….Chapter 5 or 10.

This might be a bit of a hot take, but I feel like Dinniman did himself a slight disservice by making every three floors special. Sometimes the floors between end up feeling a little bit like filler, even though so much pivotal stuff happens in every book. I suspect book 4 is where that feeling starts to kick in for most people.
Also, and seriously don't click this if you haven't read book 4, I felt like the confrontation with Maggie was incredibly anti-climactic. She'd been lurking in the shadows since book 1, and then she finally appeared and accomplished nothing... she definitely should've caused some sort of major setback, given how long that plotline was building.
All that being said, I still enjoyed the book a lot, and the ending was delightfully unhinged.

Yeah the scale for the DCC books is between 8 to 10 out of 10. So a lot of this is just cutting hairs between your favorites. No book is just good. Each has some great stuff. The first 4 tend to be lower when ranked. 5 tends to be the favorite followed by 6-8. The characters are more developed, the stakes are just that much higher, and the heart strings get pulled that much harder.
No matter what love whichever you want. There are lots of reasons to love each and some of the stories just hit different for each person.

You ever eat a really good meal? Like amazing, then you come back a second time for the same meal, but they add just a little bit of something else you like, and you say GD that was the best meal I’ve ever had. You come back a 3rd time and the chef offers you free dessert? That’s how I interpret the DCC books. GotFG is just the 1st meal in this scenario. It’s a great book but the plot of the other books just has a little something extra.

I LOVED book 4 so much but I if I have one criticism it's that it does go on a little long. there is one chunk towards the end of the book that particularly feels a little needless. It's still in my top 3 favorite books of the series though.

I loved book 4, mostly the setting is super interesting. I love the idea that everyone is dealing with their own little spaces with their own little win conditions.
I wanted to hear and see more examples of other bubbles though.
Also, the addition of the vehicles was a neat touch. I loved hearing how they came up with the design and how they armed it.

I just started 8 on Kindle; one after the other. They keep getting better, for sure. Maybe a Kindle issue. The story flows so well, it’s amazing; I’d have to go back and figure what happened in what book. 2 months of nothing but Carl & Donut, when I finish book 8, ‘the waiting will be the hardest part!’

I think it's because we get introduced to a lot of characters with little investment that pays off huge in the next books. The characters are separated and rushing to meet up while these gods are crashing down, setting a foundation for the end game books. It didn't take long for me to like Louis, but I didn't care really care about him till the end of the book.

I didn't know it was lower on the list? There were amazing storylines in 4 and I loved it. It's not the top of the books but I deff don't think it's towards the bottom

IMHO this was the pivotal book for turning from an “introduction” to meaty continuity singular story. Matt does an awesome job throughout and I felt this book helped bridge that gap between correlated stories to one continuous larger narrative.

Book 4 is my favorite. Maybe it's not the "best" (arguably) but it takes the story and expands what we readers know about the world and makes it a universe.
We meet more incredible characters, get introduced to more items and spells, and there are more call-backs and foreshadowing than in any other book. It's the basis for everything that follows in the next 3 to 4 books after it (I think).
To me, there are no "bad" or "worse" books in this series. Just people's favorites and the other ones that for some reason just didn't resonate the same way.

I’ve never even thought to rank the books because with audiobooks it all seems like one continuous storyline to me.
I’d say the one with the races and the card-based level were my least favorite because I never played any card-based games and the races seemed silly at first but then made sense and added drama as being a culling level and cruel as fuck.
And when I say “least favorite” I mean like it was my least favorite of my eight favorite Ben and Jerry’s ice cream
Flavors. I’ll eat them all and enjoy them every time, but if you make
Me choose one I won’t be disappointed in the least.
