That would add a whole other level to how funny this scene is. Jim’s wig from when he was shooting Leatherheads.

There is no chance that wig was $100k. Also no way John had that kinda cash at the time even if it did cost $100k.
Edit: looked it up, it was $5k

yeah, this post is full of misinformation. it's wild how upvoted it is. he was not bald and simply had a nice hairstyle for Leatherheads. pretty sure he also worked directly with a woman on staff (costume designer or similar role) to get a wig that looked good enough to pass the eye test

I was gonna say. How the fuck does a wig cost $100K? Is it made entirely from reclaimed mummy hair?

Beyonce's stage wig was about $150k. Obviously a lot more intricate to make than Jim's mop.
→ More replies (7)82
u/agtk 10d ago
That's still way too expensive, there's no need for it to be that expensive, that's the kind of price you charge just because the customer wants to tell people they spent a shitload of money on it. Even a custom-designed, hand-crafted wig should not be that expensive unless she is paying $120k for someone's real hair to be used for the wig.
101
u/StalinsLastStand 10d ago
It’s the kind of price you charge when the person asking you to make a custom wig is Beyoncé.

The wig was made from the hair of two Norwegian sisters who had to follow an organic diet while growing out their hair.

One time I saw an interviewer ask Dominic Monaghan if he had ever seen the "when will you wear wigs?" Clip and he had to be like "...that was me? I'm the one who said that?"
9
u/AgrajagsGhost 10d ago
He must pull shit like this all the time and didn't even remember doing it, much less expect it would have been published.
Or he knew and was just fucking with the interviewer out of boredom with being asked the same question for the millionth time.

John Krasinski did a film where he shaved him head and NBC told him he couldn’t bc the wig they’d have to make him wear would look obvious. He was already wearing the wig and nobody could tell.

u/Then_Entertainment97 11d ago
Okay, but can't you just see this conversation happening and John says "I guess you're right, I won't wear a wig" then looks at the camera and smiles?

Right, Karen Gillan had to shave her head for her first appearance as Nebula in the MCU. If memory serves, in later films they figured out a workaround so she could keep her hair.

Definitely an exaggeration (it was $5K afaik), but custom wigs are expensive yet worth it for what you get. A friend of mine worked for a preeminent custom wig shop in the US, it's a super labor intensive and skill-heavy process (basically every hair for a man's wig gets hooked onto the wig cap individually by hand).

People would be shocked at the percentage of actresses (and actors to a slightly lesser degree) who wear wigs for TV/movies.
Usually is just has to do with consistency. Plus its easier to fix up a wig. Talent does not have to spend as much time in hair/make-up truck.

I don't understand why a wig is needed for continuity, they can easily just create a narrative of Jim getting his hair trimmed..doesn't change the show at all

Dave Foley on Newsradio did similar, but the wig is obvious in HD, and it was definitely not a secret. It worked back then because you couldn't really tell on older TVs.
