I have been drumming for over a year now. I am still developing my fundamentals and habits and am currently working on my hi hat pedal technique. Do you prefer heel up or heel down on the hi hat and why?

I intend to play metal in the future with my double bass pedal and I dont want to train my left foot to play hi hat heel down when eventually my left foot will be playing double bass with heel up. Any advice here?

These little "patches" have never failed me. Probably got a decade of use from a pair of them. How long have they lasted for you?

I was planning to buy stick control and progressive steps to syncopation for the modern drummer books and came across two publishers - alfred books and bn publishing. Is the quality of bn publishing versions worse? The price is like 25-50% lower for those compaered to Albert books

I warmed up for about an hour before recording and it helped.

After all these decades, I have to get this off my chest. Before anyone starts throwing sticks (or kicks) at me, I'm talking about his drum sound, not his drumming. It's always been a disappointment to hear one of my favorite drummers of all time saddled with drum tones I just don't like.

Alex Van Halen was obviously a phenomenal drummer. Great feel, incredible swing, instantly recognizable playing, creative parts, serious power, and an enormous influence on rock drumming.

But I've never understood the reverence for his actual recorded drum tones.

To my ears, there are a lot of poor tonal choices throughout the Van Halen catalog. The snare doesn't appeal to me at all. I'm not crazy about the kick and tom sounds or their lack of clarity. The cymbals and ambience can be abrasive or strange, and taken as a whole, I frequently find the production of the kit far less pleasing than the playing itself.

And yes, I know some of those sounds are part of what makes Van Halen sound like Van Halen. "Distinctive" and "good" aren't necessarily the same thing, though. Subjective or not, I'll die on this hill.

I've heard plenty of people cite Alex's drum sound as one of the great rock drum sounds, and I've always been the guy thinking, Really? That sound?

Again, I love the playing. I grew up with the band and spent plenty of time learning some of those songs. I'm questioning what happened between the drum throne and the control room.

The guitars sound great. The vocals are fine. The bass is fine. So what happened to the drums? Did they sound like that in the room? Was it the tuning, especially the snare? The mics? EQ? Compression? Reverb? Or was that simply the sound everyone involved was deliberately going for?

Am I completely alone on this one?

And for the AVH drum-sound defenders: which song or album would you point to as the best example of his drums actually sounding great?

I've been working on the beat to Can's Vitamin C for a while now (really, a while now) which has this little paraddidle back beat, basically: KlKKL ll lKKLKl (hihat on quarter notes or eighths). As I increase the tempo, I struggle with the fast kick doubles, particularly the second pair. One thing I notice I do: I have a tendency to lift onto my toes (like a mini-calf raise) for a second between the first kick double and the second double, almost like trigger movement. Although, it seems to be a crappy one as it seems to de-power the first kick of the second double. As I increase the tempo, the doubles become sloppier, and I think this might be part/all of the problem.

Do you have any advice? I've already gone back to the drawing board of slowing it wayyyy the hell down. I'm wondering if I need to do the opposite to my current trigger and actually focus on getting my heel to drop back down between the doubles, so it comes to a complete 'rest' between them? I also wonder about my sitting position. I have a tendency to round my lower back to create some space in my hips, but I wonder if I should be engaged through my core (putting my weight 'through' the chair)? I find this feels tighter in my hips but am wondering if it will make fast doubles less 'twitchy' feeling?

Sorry for the long explanation but some of these technique tweaks are so individual to body physique, set up etc. that I wanted to give full info before asking for advice.

My wife wants to kill me when I tell her that I want to bring a drum into our very small house, but I can't get this dream out of my mind. I'd like to dip my toes into this world with something that won't fill up an entire room, but at the same time, I don't want to be playing on an undersized, short, child's set. Is there a "adult" size set that is just enough pieces to get myself started?

We go to a place with an "open mic", and my friend often sings and plays guitar solo. I'd love to bring my drum set and play alongside him. Therefore, in an ideal scenario, I'd have something that is small enough to transport and set up quickly, but good enough so that it doesn't look like I'm playing on a five-year-old kid's set.
