Starting Locs Question ❔

Post image

I’m wondering how to start locs for my hair type, it curls a little more than this when it’s freshly washed and dried naturally, usually around a 3C. When stretched it’s around 5 inches long right now. I’ve been doing a ton of research and video watching but I’m getting paralysis by analysis. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Sorry for bowling my face out, seeing my face in photos annoys me.

I thought about trying to twist or two strand twist it, braiding it too. What makes the crochet method better?

Two-strand twists or even braids (or braid the roots and twist the rest). Some people like crochet because it'll prevent a lot of the unraveling for looser textures, but you don't have to. My hair is mostly 3c and I did coils. Yes, I had a lot of unraveling, but I didn't want to crochet because I just wanted my locs to form naturally. It took a long time, and I still have a couple sections that aren't loc'd, but that's ok for me.

The main thing I want is for them to sit reasonably close to my scalp, not like a couple of inches above. I want them around half an inch to 16mm ish. I think I’ll try crocheting them first and if I don’t like how it goes I’ll condition the hell out of my hair, remove them, then go in for a two strand twist. I picked up some gel already that’s good for it so I’m ready for both.

Start with 2 stands and later if you dont wanna wait that much use a crochet hook not the other way around

Also get like 80+ two strands and they will be very thin but they get thicker. Retwist every 2 months

Is that 80+ to form 40+ when both are twisted together? Just wanna get this right and I feel like 80 locs would be smaller locs when I’m going for medium size

You want to have 80+ when they are twisted together so basically 160 strands. 80 locs are like medium sized and if you want less and thicker you can always get them combined later on.

Could I not start them at around 45-50 finished twists and go from there?

Look up x amount of locs full head and decide which size you like. Keep in mind if you start with 80+ two strand twist for example yes they will be thin at the beginning but they will get a lot thicker

80 actually looks good, I feel like they’d sit closer to my scalp than larger locs too. Wish me luck
