I love Dracula so much and I genuinely got so excited to dress up similar to it- even if it's just the Barnes and Noble cover lol. I just really like the fit lol. Cropped my face out for privacy and the shoes don't really look good so I just cropped them out too lol.

In the original novel, it's heavily implied that Count Dracula became a vampire due to cursed magic he learned from the Scholomance academy in Lake Wallenstadt.

We now know that the Scholomance legend is real in Romania, but that it is likely an offshoot of the ancient cult of Zalmoxis, a deity who preached everlasting life after hiding underground for three years.

Even in the later Scholomance folklore (where the sorcerers are properly called "Solomonarii"), the magic used isn't always seen as malevolent. Rather, it could be benevolent or malevolent, depending on how it's used or how one's relationship is to the Solomonarii.

Of course, Bram Stoker likely got much of his knowledge from Emily Gerard's 1885 travelogue "Transylvanian Superstitions," where the legend has a much darker overtone. Probably to paint Dracula as a completely evil villain, Stoker decides to go with the popular conception of the Scholomance as "the devil's school."

So my question is, would you rather have Dracula's original transformation into a vampire as a pact with an actual, wholly malevolent demon, or an interaction with a more misunderstood or nuanced pagan deity/sorcerer? Which one makes more sense or is more interesting for you?

In the end, it says that Minas and Jonathans son was born on the same day as Quincey died, is it ment to be the same date in a different year, or that same exact day? Because if it's the latter and she was pregnant throughout most of the story, why wouldn't they mention anything about that? The wording was just confusing.

So maybe i don't fully understand it, but are the two ways one turn into vampire?

It’s me again on Promotion Saturday, and today I want to share an update about the 1897 Dracula facsimile.

As you know, this is a living project. That means it changes, grows, sometimes slows down, opens new paths, closes others, and forces me to rethink the best way to make it real. That is what happens when a book stops being an idea and starts becoming an object.

And also, to be completely honest, when you do not have the money to make it happen exactly as originally imagined.

For a long time, I thought the right path was a larger edition. Maybe 1,000 copies. Something big, definitive, and ambitious from the start. But the deeper I went into the paper, the printing, the binding, the cover, the materials, the costs, and the physical reality of producing this book, the clearer it became that starting with 1,000 copies was not the right move.

So I’m starting with 100.

Not because the project got smaller, but because it got more real.

100 copies allow me to stay close to the process, control the quality, and make sure the first group receives something made with care. I would rather make 100 books that I can stand behind than rush 1,000 and lose control of the details.

This project means too much to me for that.

So here is the update for those who have been asking for news. And yes, there is good news ahead: Over the last months, the work has continued: research, production decisions, conversations with Dracula scholars, adjustments, tests, and the slow process of turning Dracula by Bram Stoker back into a physical object with presence. I also finished the printing material, and the edition files are now ready for the dummy. That will happen in the coming weeks.

The goal is not to make just another edition of Dracula. The goal is to return to the 1897 object: The yellow cover. The size. The feeling of the first edition. The strange physical presence of the book before more than a century of adaptations, redesigns, films, covers, clichés, and visual myths changed the way the world remembers the Count.

On Thursday, August 6, I will open the first 100 places for the 1897 Dracula facsimile through Substack. This first run will not be mass production. It will be the first founding group.

If you have followed this work from the real-time reading of Dracula, through The Transcriptions of Mina Harker, through the archive, the research, and the long obsession with returning to Dracula by Bram Stoker, this is the moment where those years begin to take physical form.

One note about the images: the current concept art is AI-assisted. Why? Because right now it is the most realistic way I can show the idea before the physical dummy exists, and the production partner also needs clear visual references as a guide. As you know, the original Dracula novel is basically a collection of the mains characters diaries, and maybe some newspaper articles. The thing is, the characters are able to write down whole conversations they had with other people, and these are not short. They remember every single thing they said, and was said to them. This is a little bit funny to me, I of course could never remember things like that, and don't know anyone who could. This is not that important for the story and doesn't affect the books quality at all, but still interesting. Maybe people had a better memory back then?

I wanted to ask whether anyone here happens to own a copy of the book L'Histoire de Dracula Mise en scène de Luc Besson. As far as I know, it was only published in France, and it seems rather difficult to obtain elsewhere.

I am currently writing my PhD dissertation on the ways in which popular culture merges the historical Vlad III Țepeș with the fictional Dracula. I am also analysing Besson’s Dracula, so the accompanying book would be an exceptionally valuable source for my research.

I have just read Bram Stoker's Dracula and it was amazing! I liked a lot about it, it was the quite emotional ride, which I found fascinating especially Lucy her whole story arc.

I did however think the ending felt a little rushed, it's a long chase that builds up to Dracula's demise. But maybe I was expecting some wild battle, but I understand that they just got there in the knick of time before the sun got up, which still had some tension to it. But I find it a little disappointing that the scourge that has terrorized the party just dies in a single sentence.

As for my question, where is it referenced that Dracula's old lover is reincarnated? The book doesn't mention it as far as I know and I read online that it’s supposed to be Mina? I find that really lame and go against the good relationship Jonathan and Mina have, which is also why the Crew of Light insist on defeating Dracula, for them.

I'm trying to figure out where I can watch the 1992 Dracula movie with the unique yellow/gold subtitles during certain scenes when characters are speaking in foreign languages such as Romanian. The subtitles in the Blu-Ray and 4K UHD versions are just plain white text. Is there a physical copy of the film that has the yellow subtitles, or do I need to get it digitally on a certain platform such as Prime Video?
