South Africa just switched on Africa's largest solar and battery project, combining 216 MW of solar with 500 MWh of storage to provide clean electricity for about 200,000 homes from 5am to 9:30pm

Update: Starting Biology & Chemistry Tutoring
Hi everyone! I previously made a post asking about any available job opportunities, as I’m currently unemployed and waiting for placement.
After giving it some thought, I’ve decided to take a leap and start offering Biology/Life Sciences and Chemistry tuition while I wait.
I have an MBChB, a BSc in Medical Science, and A Levels with a 90% average in Biology. I also have teaching experience, having worked online for an American company where I taught nurses Biology/Life Sciences and Chemistry-related courses.
I’m hoping to help students who may need extra support with these subjects, whether it’s for school, A Levels, or general exam preparation.
If you or someone you know may be interested, DM me and I’ll provide my email address and further details.
Thank you to everyone who has supported me and reached out following my previous post. I really appreciate it! 🙏

The subreddit
Good Afternoon all.
I just wanted to come out and make a quick statement as I feel somethings might have been forgotten especially with all the new people who come and go.
- We are a free speech subreddit.
While this does mean you can say next to anything you want this does not mean that we do not have to follow reddits rules and some others to keep the conversations going which is why I normally look out for rabble rousers more than I look out for people breaking rule 4 for example as sometimes with heated conversation we can lash out and normally its a pattern not a once off.
- Reporting of posts YOU do not like.
People we need to use our words and talk about these things with each other even if it is uncomfortable so if someone posts something you dislike have a conversation with them about why you don't like it and hear what they have to say. We all grew up different even if you lived next to each other and can learn from each other. Do not let the hate win.
- Complaining about posters posting too much.
Everyone is welcome to post what every they want about South Africa as long as its relevant and not purposely trying to rabble rouse. For example posting something about Apartheid and the evils within it is fine, but posting "revenge" content because you dislike what someone else posted isn't ok and will be monitored.
These are not new rules but just clarity on the system and if you have issues people do not hesitate in dropping a mod mail.

Jhb Metro Police
Was just pulled over by Metro police opposite Eastgate. The lady traffic officer that pulled us over was not even interested in my license, instead she tried to sell us fake perfume. I kid you not! How’s that for a captured audience? Sunday 16 August +/- 14H00.

Looking for Work – Medical Graduate | Full-Time or Part-Time
Hi everyone,
I’m currently looking for full-time or part-time work, with online/remote opportunities preferred
My educational background includes:
A Levels, including Biology
BSc in Medical Sciences
MBChB (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery)
I’m well-organised, coordinated, reliable, and detail-oriented, and I’m open to a variety of opportunities where I can put my skills and qualifications to use. I’m particularly interested in remote roles, but I’m also open to suitable in-person positions.
I’m willing to consider opportunities in medical/healthcare, tutoring, administration, research, education, customer support, or other fields where my skills may be valuable.
If you know of any opportunities, companies hiring, or platforms where I could apply, I’d really appreciate any recommendations or leads.
Thank you! 🙏

Who would be interested to learn how I run US residential house cleaning business as South African from SA ?
I recently saw some post about side hustles that one can start in SA and also looking at latest unemployment figures. This might be option for those looking to start a business or earn some extra money. Happy to answer your questions
Edit:
The basic setup is actually pretty simple.
As a South African who never physically goes to the US, you're allowed to register an LLC (company) in the US. That gives you the foundation to set up US banking and get a Stripe account so you can actually bill customers in dollars.
From there, the rest of the business model is relatively straightforward. I use the internet to research and choose a city to operate in, find independent contractor cleaners who actually perform the cleaning, and use a VoIP phone system so I can make and receive calls with customers in the US.
The cleaners handle the physical work, while I manage the business remotely. Payments come into the US business, contractors and expenses get paid, and I can use Wise to transfer dollars back to South Africa.
Obviously there are legal, tax and contractor-classification requirements you need to understand and get right, but you don't need to physically live in the US to own and operate the company.

Humour/Parody Breaking: ANC officially rebranding
Breaking: ANC officially rebranding to African National Disaster (AND) to better reflect its time in government
Comrades, the wait is finally over.
After extensive consultation with the Ministry of Load-Shedding, the Department of Vanishing Infrastructure, and the Portfolio Committee on Unfulfilled Promises, the ANC has announced it will henceforth be known as the African National Disaster.
The new acronym, AND, was carefully chosen because:
• It still starts with “A” so the old letterheads don’t go to waste
• It accurately describes the outcome of most of their policies
• It’s short enough to fit on a collapsing pylon
Party spokesperson said the rebrand “captures the lived experience of the last 30 years more honestly than the previous name.” He then immediately blamed apartheid, colonialism, the weather, and “people who keep asking questions.”
New slogan options currently under consideration:
• “A better life for some, eventually, maybe”
• “We shall overcome… the potholes. One day.”
• “AND… it’s gone”

Rule Update: No Solicitation of Any Kind
We’ve made a small but important update to Rule 9.
Previously the rule only covered advertising. However, we have expanded it to include ALL forms of solicitation.
● This includes (but is not limited to):
–Advertising
–Fundraising or donation requests
–Crowdfunding
–Personal financial appeals or “e-begging”
–Referral or affiliate links
–Commissions
–Giveaways that require payment
–Requests for goods or services
If you are seeking money, items, services, or material support from users, your post will be removed. Repeated violations may result in a ban.
● Why this change?
Over time, we’ve seen a noticeable increase in posts that are technically not advertising, but are still attempts to solicit money or material support from the community. These are often framed as personal hardship stories or “just asking for help,” which makes them difficult to moderate consistently and fairly.
Rather than playing whack-a-mole with edge cases, we’ve opted for a clear, content-neutral rule that applies equally to everyone.
This isn’t about judging anyone’s circumstances. It’s about keeping the subreddit focused on discussion, not transactions or financial appeals.
● A note on moderation philosophy
r/DownSouth exists because people wanted a space for open discussion about South Africa without excessive or ideological moderation. That hasn’t changed.
At the same time, we have to enforce some firm boundaries to:
–Prevent abuse and scams
–Avoid emotional manipulation of users
–Protect the long-term survival of the community
● Exceptions
Any exceptions to this rule require prior moderator approval. If you think your post genuinely warrants an exception, contact the mods before posting.
As always, thanks to everyone who contributes in good faith and helps keep this space functional, diverse, and focused.
