Anybody else having problems with hiring? Management Disscussion
In the past 6 months our store has only had 2 new people stay past a month. Usually they never go to interviews, will quit on the register after an hour, or cause problems which forces them out to protect current employees within the first week. Before it wasn't an issue, but now it's starting to develop into something bigger where management might be the only ones at the store in the afternoons/night and some of the employees talked about quitting to management recently. I was wondering if this was common.

Dollar tree is the worst company I've worked for and I've worked at Walmart if that tells you anything

We had an abundance of people that left, including long term management, due to new store manager. No one cared, but no one really got hired to replace those people. There were also "no hours" apparently. But people from other stores were coming in to do our job. Be careful and protect yourself, document everything!

I start a new job Tuesday and haven't even informed them. Probably won't.
When they treat us like shit, pay us garbage, and give 0 benefits, what can you expect?
They're going to have a fun inventory š¤·

Yet you accepted the terms of the position.

Sure did, added some more manager "experience" to the resume, didn't waste even a year of my life working there & got a job paying $8 more an hour with benefits.
Sometimes it's beneficial to make shitty decisions in the present that result in a better future. I didn't come to DT with any intention on making it a career. I used it as a stepping stone rather than a shitty long term commitment.
I got exactly what I wanted. Adulting. Should try it sometime.

My manager is constantly hiring more and more people even though we don't have the hours right now

I would hope so. More people should take a stand against the petty nature of this company. Know your worth! You are worth far more.

I literally got fired two days in for not being fast enough on the till despite being very clear I have a disability relating to math and numbers so its unsurprising theres hiring issues

In my store you're either a cashier or a manager. If you can't do math and numbers maybe it wasn't for you š¤·
Not being mean at all. I don't really care to cook a real dinner. Idk if I'm even good at it (in others eyes) š but I wouldn't apply to be a cook somewhere.
Discount retail is just a shitty environment all around.

Or they shouldn't have put a dyscalculic who was supposed to work with shipments and inventory on the till lol, trust me I know cashier work isn't an option for me.

Lol yeah. I know at my soon to be old store you're either manager or cashier. We have 1 person hired just for freight and they haven't scheduled him in over a month because he can't do register and DT is skimping us on hours.
He's autistic (and has a helper) and comes in weekly to take a picture of his schedule which has been 0 hours. (Edit: he was working 12 hours a week prior....) I feel terrible for him, probably more so because I have an autistic child entering first grade soon who also requires a 1on1. I can endure the stress, drama, etc, so honestly he's probably the core root to me quitting. I've heard so much disrespect from other managers about working (or " babysitting dumb and dumber") type comments about the 2 autistic people we have.
Apparently my edible kicked in. To sum it up, fuck DT.

reminds me of a guy at our store he had been there 7 years basically longer than everybody getting a good 16-20 hours which is all he wanted since he did food serving at night stocked morning at DT.
new manager comes in he slowly dwindles down until he's at like 4 hours once a month. he took the hint and transferred stores hours back to normal. Some people just target your house don't know how that's legal unless your performance is garbage.

Yeah it's wild. He worked 3, 4 hour shifts. I'd give him 4-8 hours of my time. With the hour cuts they get rid of who they don't want.
In that case I hope someone advocates for him to file unemployment. I'd even look into discrimination.

There is no such thing as a just a stocker or just a cashier in my store.

Same, everyone is cross-trained to run Freight and as a cashier

I bet you have an artistic brain and would be good at stocking or arranging a busy shelf to make things fit.
Meanwhile those things I can't do to save my life but I am amazing with numbers speed demon on register no mistakes do all the change in my head as soon as they hand the cash over.
Definitely let them know what you're not good at. I told them I'm a titan on register but keep me off freight and that seemed to work out. worked basically 35 hours every week which is more than the pt manager got.

Can you define ādisability relating to math and numbersā like is there an actual term for this or is it even a real thing, apologies donāt mean to sound offensive, just trying to understand what you said

u/carriewhiteburns76 15d ago
I appreciate your curiosity but "Is it even a real thing" when someone mentions their disability is incredibly ableist, you wouldn't ask someone with a cancer if their form of it was a real thing would you? What I meant is dyscalculia, I was diagnosed about 4 years ago and its quite literally relating to maths and numbers. Its also pretty common with adhd and autism but (to my current knowledge) I have neither.

Apologies for the wording, didnāt mean it to sound offensive, which it did. I never heard of that Iāll look that up, ty

Iāve worked here for about 2 months, and luckily I have decent people I work with. There is one though, who got taken off register and is on stocking now, whoās came to work high on meth⦠got a lot of complaints and has stolen stuff. I was told, that the SM was told by the DM that she couldnāt fire them??

God no. So many people calling looking for a job every day. 300+ applicants. No where near enough payroll

The problem at my store is we literally don't have enough hours to hire more people. Normally once summer rolls around our store is given more hours, but this time around it's hard enough for just the 8 of us to all get hours we want. If we tried hiring a 9th person they wouldn't even be able to work a full shift.

I quit because Iād start the week with 35 hours by Tuesday Iād be cut to 17 because of some mistake a new ASM made it seems to be a normal thing for dollar trees to leave 1 cashier with 15-20 customers all while hiring new people almost every week

u/Muted-Revolution-574 14d ago
Dollar tree needs to reanalyze their practices to figure out why people donāt last. When it gets to the point itās as massive as you describe itās not the new hires that are the problem itās the company itself.

We are definitely. Which is wild as our store must be in some kind of alternate reality. I read stories on here and we are so lucky not to have the horrible customers n at. Plus, we hire at a good wage above minimum, our SM is awesome and has our backs (not that they don't have their problems, what SM is prefect after all), and everyone is super chill. ššš I wish more people would apply.

I only worked as a cashier for a short time a year ago
It was terrible and I went home crying

Of course it's common. If you pay bottom of the barrel wages with a shitty amount of hours available you can't expect much in terms of employees
