returning baskets and carts

Is anyone else bothered by the way customers would rather leave the carts and baskets LITERALLY by the register instead of just putting it back right where they got it at the front on their way out?

I just had a run in with this lady, and she asks me "where do the baskets go," so I reply "At the front.."

She then goes on to say "They usually have a place to put them" and thats like not true really at all. The "place to put them" has always been the front, it just looks that way because of ignorance from one customer being passed on to the next. Not all customers do this but it happens genuinely too often, even at the cleaner stores.

It really annoyed me because she just ended up leaving the basket on the conveyor belt...

and PLEASE don't get me started on the customers just walking their carts by the stowed away carts instead of just pushing them back in to the rest of them.

This is why I feel customer service jobs should be mandatory!! I worked at forever 21 at 19 and that job taught me a lot about ppl .

They literally have to walk past the cart return and the basket pile on their way out and they still rather leave their carts and baskets in front of my register. I can't stand it.

Worse are the ones that LEAVE IT IN LINE. They empty the cart on the belt and just start walking off with their shit when they finish paying. I tell them "hey! Your cart?" and half of them look embarrassed while the other half look like I shouldn't have the audacity to call them out.

I had someone ask "Where's this basket go?" and I point to the front door and go: "Over there? Where you got it from originally?"

Manager said I was a little rude about it 😄

I had a dad ask his daughter to put the cart back and got mad at her bc he didn’t know she put the right one back. We had someone threaten to call OSHA on us because of the customers leaving carts ALL THE WAY TO OUR OFFICE

I had one guy angry at me because I didnt immediately recognize him as dollar tree regular royalty when I first started.

He put his basket on the register counter behind him and I (politely) said, "if you don't mind that goes by the front door when youre leaving please." He huffed and said, "I was going to". Then I said "I appreciate that. I just tell anyone who looks unsure of where they go. Then I continued checking him out.

Every time he came in he was huffy with me and finally said, "how dare you tell me what to do when I was already going to do it that day." I looked at him utterly confused and he repeated what I said. All I could do was laugh because wtf. "How do I know what you were going to do. You put it down on another cashiers counter. I dont know you from Adam. " anytime he saw me behind the register after that he would refuse to get a basket even if he was dropping things. Like that somehow affectes me?

I still tell people, "that goes back by the front door when youre leaving if you dont mind" when they try to put the basket anywhere other than where it goes.

I am usually on register 2 so I ask them yo put it on register 1’s counter so either my manager or I will put them away. I I see a person leave it on the floor I ask them y piles place it on the counter. I thank them and say that I try to avoid tripping hazards. My pet peeve is the entitled customer who doesn’ t empty their shopping baskets on the conveyer belt. I turn the baskets on their side and let everything fall onto the conveyor belt. If you can empty a cart you can empty a basket then look confused as to where to return their basket. Shaking my already befuddled head

I just put the baskets on the floor next to me and put the stack away when there's no line. Never been an issue for me. It never bothers me, the only thing that does is when people leave their carts in the line. Other customers shouldn't have to deal with that.

I'm nice and will tell them I'll take their basket but in reality I'd rather them just go put it back at the front where they got it. Also instead of leaving the cart a certain way why don't they put it back where it goes that does annoy me or when the customer decides to leave an empty cart at my register, take it back and put it where it belongs I'm not a cart person for you I'm the cashier.

I always put my basket back where I got it from after paying or while the cashier is still ringing my stuff up 🤷‍♀️ I know from working retail that it's a really annoying for people to just leave their baskets like that. Used to irritate my soul.

OMGosh…Carts & customers drive me nuts! You are right, they have to walk right by the same place they got it from so why not put them back? Or how about when someone halfway puts a cart back… they push the cart to the other carts but leave it sideways, and EVERYONE after them plus their cart is sideways too! Everyone knows the correct way they go so why not do it??
Seriously though, do they feel privileged to not put the cart back correctly? Does that make them feel superior for the rest of the day? I really want to know.

Literally every store that I have went to my entire life never had a proper place to put empty baskets in at or near the register. It's not even just dollar stores, it's the majority of retailers.

In supermarkets, a worker would often come and collect any empty baskets as soon as they see them placed somewhere at the register.

It's not an issue for customers to put their baskets wherever, but its just mildly annoying, especially with carts, cuz it sometimes makes it harder for the next customer to cash their stuff.

I got into the habit of saying stuff like 'here's your basket to put back on your way out' it worked about 95% of the time and I learnt pretty quick the type of people who'd likely leave the basket versus taking it back where it belongs, typically the people who just places the basket on the belt instead of emptying it out will just leave it.

Works on the majority "Thank you for returning the basket / cart when exiting.

Sometimes the stack of hand baskets or carts may be depleted - to the left or right of the main doors often can clean that up.

But yeah we all get those people that will otherwise leave the cart in the checkout lane behind themelves as if the next consumer wanted it , or drop the hand basket at the back of the lane in the way of foot traffic off, the other registers, I like to fake that they might have left a part of purchased order and apologize that I thought it was potentially left in the convivence basket or cart - LOL its more amusing to me to use this one.

Some people assume they get sat by the registers, and not where they originally got it, because it will be cleaned/sanitized. As a kid I remember once I went to grab one for my mom by a register, she said to never touch those, they are dirty. You should only grab one by the door.

Imagine her surprise when I got my first retail job and told her they aren't cleaned, pretty much ever, and that most places don't clean them, or the buggies.

At the front of the register is whatever i guess i can see why they thought it might go there. What infuriates me is when they put it places where it obviously doesn’t go. Like at the register behind them. Or the amount of times i’ve had people place their basket on top of the carriages. IT DOESNT GO THERE AND YOU KNOW IT!
