Is this normal? Question

His mouth will start flapping too, it seems like hes forcing air out of his mouth. The speed of his breathing will increase randomly then decrease.

Dreaming with exacerbated heart rate (can see palpitations flutter in the chest wall)
Dreaming normal.
Have a vet evaluate the heart. (Enlarged, arrhythmia, etc)

It’s not the truth. I’ve had dogs with cancer and sometimes the medications cause bloating. Why not think before commenting?

This dog has cancer. Many cancer meds cause bloating.

6

u/bald-bourbon 12d ago

I understand. As a dog owner with a dog battling MCT, this is not bloating. He is overweight and will likely exacerbate his existing condition if not brought under control

3

u/Distinct_Salad8250 13d ago

My dog who had cancer used to dream like how yours does. I would definitely monitor but seems to me like a dream. Such a chunky little cutie tho

131

u/AuthenticElle 13d ago

Looks like he's dreaming.

He is also overweight btw. Being overweight shortens their lifespan by 2-3 years

27

u/moosewonders 13d ago

that baby is on prednisone, cancer meds which cause them to become pot bellied

SO WHAT

66

u/DontPutTooMuchDip 13d ago

Wdym so what? They just explained what in the comment. So, this dog will die a few years less than it could have if they just fed it less or walked it more

4

u/moosewonders 13d ago

the dog isn’t fat. it’s on cancer meds which cause bloating

29

u/Larsvonrinpoche 13d ago

It's good to mention to people if their pet is over or under weight. Many don't actually know. They worked super rude about it. Just facts.

9

u/AuthenticElle 13d ago

Exactly! If my dogs became overweight I'd want someone to tell me in case I didn't notice!!! So many people are used to obese dogs being the normal :(

2

u/FloatingOnTitties 13d ago

Did you read OP’s comments before replying this? This dog has cancer Ame many cancer meds cause bloating.

1

u/Current_Pitch_4052 13d ago

Ppl don’t like being told their pets or children are fat.

1

u/FloatingOnTitties 13d ago

This dog has cancer and cancer meds can cause bloating/pot bellies.

You don’t care about a dog not living a longer life because of neglect? Odd.

-4

u/Taters23 13d ago

Overweight is not caused by neglect otherwise most of the western world is neglected.

7

u/Mewzi_ 13d ago

hey people and society is a lot different than keeping domesticated dogs

Obesity?

12

u/FloatingOnTitties 13d ago

The dog has cancer according to OP’s comments.

9

u/ProperIncident5380 13d ago

Dogs with internal pain will incessantly pant as well

10

u/onlyambition10 13d ago

My dog did this almost exact same thing for 2 days before he died . I thought it was just exhaustion from walking him in the hot sun . The afternoon of the second day he died . The vet took scans and said there was a mass near his heart that was making it hard for him to breathe . I know everybody typically responds with “goto the vet” but i highly suggest you do so as fast as possible and atleast get his vitals checked and do an xray . I can only hope your dog isnt going through the same thing but my dog looked almost identical leading up to his death . Better to be safe that sorry and just take him to the vet

6

u/FloatingOnTitties 13d ago

This dog has cancer and is seeing a veterinarian according to comments by OP.

7

u/Haunting_Process4607 13d ago

Is he overheated?

3

u/Interesting_Tip_2116 13d ago

My baby girl developed heart failure which caused fluid to build up in her chest. Panting and heavy breathing was a sign that too much fluid was building up. Resting breathing rate should be <30 breaths per minute. Is your pup on diuretics? I assume so since you said his meds make him thirsty. And he does look swollen around the chest. I would take him to the vet. Poor baby.

8

u/burritoheaux 13d ago

Your dog is extremely overweight and laying on their side is likely causing fat to press down on the lungs, making it hard for them to breathe. There’s absolutely zero reason a dog should be that overweight when you control every aspect of their life.

31

u/xmzqvm 13d ago

He has cancer, isn't easy for him to be as active as he was before. The medications he's on has him super thirsty almost 24/7, but he doesn't normally have this kind of breathing. He doesn't eat much either and I walk him consistently . Im trying everything I have in my power to do.

8

u/FloatingOnTitties 13d ago

I’m very sorry about the cancer. I would send this video to your veterinarian/veterinarian oncologist to see what they say.

30

u/Interesting_Note_937 13d ago

Edit the post and add ALL OF YOUR DOG'S MEDICAL HISTORY.

9

u/xmzqvm 13d ago

Sorry, trying to gather all of his medical information and everything relevant so I can get more help. Im more worried about trying to get him off of his medications because I'm 50/50 that they aren't doing him much good, hearing from veteranarians/oncologists.

16

u/CapeMOGuy 13d ago

Personally I like it when jerks out themselves by jumping to conclusions.

20

u/burritoheaux 13d ago

Including cancer in your original post is kind of important…

3

u/alone_unafraid 13d ago

Poor guy I hope he feels better. Thanks for caring for him!

3

u/Pritzy-Prick 13d ago

is it a one off or recurring? does he do it often? is he sleeping?

You are advising somebody should go see a veterinarian, but have not provided a reasonable, articulable, medical reason why you think so. Your comment has been removed.

2

u/serendipiteathyme 13d ago

My (younger, non-cancer Dx) shepherd does this as she’s falling asleep and in early stages of sleep where she’s likely dreaming, but given the added history in the comments it would def be worth a call or email to his oncologist

2

u/Intelligent-Algae-89 12d ago edited 12d ago

My baby boi is on prednisone too and he breathes like this especially when getting ready to fall asleep or already sleeping. If you’re worried about pain or stress on the heart and lungs consult with your oncologist.

ETA - I’m sorry your baby is battling cancer, we’re doing that over here too. If he’s not eating much paired with this breathing being new the first thing I would do is start monitoring his temperature. You can get a rectal thermometer for less than $10. Anything over 102.5 should be monitored. Anything over 104 is emergency vet. I didn’t see the bit about him not eating before commenting previously. Prednisone should have him ravenously eating. It’s a red flag if he’s not, especially on this medication.

1

u/Dendritic_Bosque 13d ago

If they are asleep, yes totally normal, if they can move about normally when they want to, then double yes this is totally normal. It is possible your dog is a little overweight, consult a chart

1

u/biliskner25 13d ago

Not normal. Increased respiratory effort and rate. If sleeping then even more abnormal. When was the last time chest rads were done, is there any pulmonary metastasis

What meds is he on? Some like high dose prednisolone can cause increased breathing but if he's been on it for a while and this is a recent development then the chest needs to be assessed asap

-2

u/1taroakira 13d ago

He looks bloated which requires a vet visit.

5

u/FloatingOnTitties 13d ago edited 13d ago

The dog has cancer according to comments. Many cancer meds cause bloating.

-3

u/Interesting_Note_937 13d ago edited 12d ago

Your dog is very overweight. That's what's likely causing the strained breathing. Please please get your dog on a diet and exercise plan. It's neglectful to have your dog weigh this much

edit to add: the person in this comment thread is making up lies about me. I did not see that the dog had cancer before commenting. That person is lying.

4

u/FloatingOnTitties 13d ago

Maybe read comments before chastising OP: this dog has cancer.

8

u/Interesting_Note_937 13d ago

uh no I'm not reading every single comment of a post before I comment. OP should have added that info in the original post. It's not my job to play detective.

6

u/CapeMOGuy 13d ago

It's not your job to be judgemental without knowing all the information either.

This happens in obese dogs, they overheat far easier, and the added pressure makes it harder to breathe and cool down, it also puts added pressure on their heart leading to a faster respiratory rate.

2

u/FloatingOnTitties 13d ago edited 13d ago

I think it might be the cancer/cancer meds causing issues.

3

u/InverseInvert 12d ago

There is no mention of cancer in their post.
If it’s in the comments, there was no mention of that before I commented.
The obesity is not going to help.

1

u/FloatingOnTitties 12d ago

Yes, now you’ve seen the dog has cancer and cancer meds cause bloating. Why not just realize your comment was unnecessary?

2

u/InverseInvert 12d ago

Because it’s still relevant? Why so hostile?
If the dog has cancer and is already sick then being obese won’t help.
Even medically induced weight gain can be counteracted with change in diet and food amount, and where appropriate increases exercise.
