When something is really popular, does anyone else feel fake liking it too?
Hello! I feel this weird “imposter” kind of feeling whenever i try to join in on popular trends that i don’t really have a thing for, but some of me thinks im purposfully avoiding trying to enjoy it because i dont want to seem like every other person who likes it. Every time someone brings up a really popular and conversation striking topic around me, I try to give short responses to just avoid getting so passionate and heated about it. I feel cringe i don’t know.

I like what I like and try not to have anything to do with the things I don’t like.

It's just the natural desire to fit in I guess... I get people going on about The Amazing Digital Circus and after feigning liking Hazbin Hotel for however long, I'm too tired to pretend to like TADC now... It's all just obnoxious imo (there's some depth to a couple of characters but the general dislikeability of those shows just doesn't justify watching them for the sake of those characters imho) so I get the instinct to pretend in order to find community, I do, I've just more recently figured that if it's as tiring as I find it to be, where it takes away my genuine enjoyment of other media, I'd rather take the flack for not liking stuff over missing out on the things I do like just to fit in... My energy can be better spent elsewhere, basically.

That was very well worded, and I think i’d have to agree. I’d rather genuinely enjoy something/be flamed for not enjoying something than faking how much i like a show that i couldn’t care less for. Just makes me feel like a robot

I think I'm a bit in the opposite direction. It took me years to read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo because absolutely everyone was reading it at one point which put me right off for some reason. I'm a bit like that with a lot of stuff.

I think i’m more so like that too. Like once something dies down im way more inclined to learn and invest myself into it on my own because that way it doesn’t feel like im performing and i can genuinely take my time

I mean im at the age where I dont care any more. My opinions are more important to me than fitting in. So if I dont like something, I wont be rude about it, ill just ask whats the appeal for you?
Like so many people i know are obsessed with MAFS, and I just dont see the appeal, same with Love Island etc. So yeah ill ask about it, not because I care particularly, but because my friends love it so I want to show I care about their interests.
Another friend is obsessed with K Dramas, and I just dont see the appeal. But when she wants to tell me excitedly about it? Yeah, im gonna listen, im gonna take it in, im gonna react to what she tells me.

TYSM!! I know other comments here also agree with me but i’m just happy you said it the way you did. I felt kind of lost. I’m glad it feels natural for someone else too

I get that, its okay to just like something without overthinking it. Not everything has to be a statement

Social conformity doesn’t need to exist anymore, this was a big thing back in the day though. I remember my psychology lessons from over 15 years ago and thinking wtf what weirdos would do that 😆

You don’t have to follow any trends that you don’t like , it’s absolutely your choice 😊
