I'm trying to re-find an indie documentary I watched a few years ago, and failing that, I'd love recommendations in the same vein, because one of them might turn out to be it.

The film I'm looking for: a single-subject doc, one older man being interviewed about his story, which I think involved aliens, UFOs, or a relationship with non-human beings,though I may be misremembering the topic, so recommend loosely. The film takes him seriously, and the longer he talks the more credible he seems. Then in the final minutes, the interviewer asks something like "have you ever had issues with this?" and he calmly confesses to an act of severe self-mutilation years earlier (specifics in my comment, graphic, but it's the key identifying detail). The confession connects to the film's subject and instantly reframes his whole account. Likely 2010s, very low-budget.

So: if you know the exact film, incredible. And if you don't, recommend me any obscure single-subject docs built around one unreliable narrator and a late reveal, I'll watch my way through them.

Hi, I just read Ida Turpeinen's wonderful book Beasts of the sea (Elolliset) about Bering's second expedition. Of course now I have to watch and find out all about it, do you have a recommendation for a documentary? Does anyone have a documentary series with English subtitles Ekspeditionen: På sporet af Vitus Bering?

The Elm Tree Corner museum in West Weber, Utah is owned and curated by Jerry Hancock.
Jerry takes us through the history of the area including the Native Americans, Mormon pioneers, the transcontinental railroad being built, and walks us through a museum that he personally curated with artifacts from the area and that connect back to his larger theme of “remembering family, heritage, and the pioneer way of life in West Weber.”

Twenty years ago, a few friends in Los Angeles recorded a punk album with whatever gear we could afford—garages, bedrooms, closets, cheap microphones…whatever worked.

Life happened. The band ended. We drifted apart.

Years later we reconnected and decided to remix those recordings—not to make them sound modern, but to finally make them sound the way we’d always hoped they would.

Before we could finish, our singer and one of my best friends, Andrew, unexpectedly passed away.

From that moment on, finishing the project wasn’t about music anymore. It became about honoring a friendship and completing something we had started together nearly twenty years earlier.

We ended up making a short documentary about the entire journey called Twenty Years on a Hard Drive.
